How long does NDT certification take?
The training hours and industrial experience required depend on method and level under SNT-TC-1A or ISO 9712, and experience is usually the binding constraint rather than classroom time. A candidate starting from zero should plan in months rather than weeks for a first Level II, because documented on-the-job hours have to accumulate alongside the training and examinations.
What does the certification actually require beyond passing an exam?
A general examination, a specific examination on the employer's procedures, and a practical examination; documented training hours; documented on-the-job experience hours; and a current near-vision acuity and colour-contrast examination. Under SNT-TC-1A the employer certifies against its own written practice, so the written practice is part of the requirement rather than background paperwork.
Is on-site corporate training better than sending people to public courses?
For groups, almost always. The crew is qualified together against the written practice they actually work to, on your own equipment and specimens, which removes both the travel cost and the inconsistency that comes from sending technicians to different providers over several years. It also produces a personnel record with consistent documentation, which is what a client audit examines.
Which certification should I take first?
For most people a method-level Level II in the method their work actually uses — usually UT or RT in fixed equipment, MT or PT in fabrication. API 510, API 570 or API 653 come later, once documented inspection experience exists, because those certifications assume it. Taking an API inspector certification before the underlying experience exists is a common and expensive sequencing mistake.
ASNT Level III online training — what online delivery legitimately covers
Level III is the one certification level where online delivery genuinely fits, because the
examinations are knowledge examinations: the ASNT Basic covers materials, methods-overview and
certification-programme administration, and each Method exam covers technique, interpretation and
procedure knowledge. All of that can be taught and revised remotely, and candidates preparing for
the ASNT Level III route routinely do the majority of their
preparation this way while working full-time.
API 570, 510 and 653 online preparation
The API in-service codes are similar: the body of knowledge is documentary — code paragraphs,
calculation methods, acceptance criteria — and preparation for API 570,
API 510 and API 653 works well
online, paced against the exam windows. Note that
exam delivery itself is administered by API under its own current rules — check api.org for what

What online delivery cannot do — stated plainly
Two things, and no online provider can waive either. The practical examination:
Level I and II certification requires demonstrating setup, calibration, examination and evaluation on
physical specimens in front of an examiner — a screen cannot assess a probe technique. And
experience hours: certification under SNT-TC-1A requires documented, supervised
time in the method that no amount of coursework substitutes for. Online theory plus on-site
practical is therefore the honest structure for Level I/II — which is exactly how Atlantis delivers
