NDT Training and Certification in Massachusetts

Massachusetts technicians and employers get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III NDT training from Atlantis NDT as live online classes, scheduled live-virtual cohorts, or onsite courses at their own plant, shop, yard or hangar. An ASNT NDT Level III leads every programme and aligns it with the employer's written practice, so classroom time counts toward certification. Methods: UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus preparation for the Level III exams.

The Commonwealth's NDT market looks different from the refinery-heavy states. There are no oil refineries here. Instead, demand comes from jet-engine and defence manufacturing on the North Shore and along Route 128 and I-495, precision forging and machining in Worcester County, a growing offshore wind supply chain in New Bedford and on the South Coast, LNG and fuel terminals around Boston Harbor, a decommissioning nuclear plant in Plymouth, and one of the oldest bridge, tunnel and rail networks in the country. Massachusetts also runs its own industrial radiographer certification, which matters for RT crews. This page is organised around that map. If you already know what you need, request a Massachusetts training quote and we will reply within one business day.

Where NDT technicians work in Massachusetts

Massachusetts NDT work concentrates in five areas: aerospace and defence manufacturing around Lynn and the Route 128/I-495 belt, precision metals in Worcester County and the Blackstone Valley, Boston Harbor's energy terminals, ship repair and infrastructure, the South Coast offshore wind and fishing-fleet ports, and the manufacturing and defence towns of the Pioneer Valley and the Berkshires. Each area leans on different methods and codes.

North Shore and the Route 128/I-495 defence belt

GE Aerospace's plant in Lynn has built military and commercial jet engines and helicopter engines for decades, and its supplier base spreads across Essex and Middlesex counties. Raytheon, part of RTX, designs and builds radar and missile systems at sites including Andover and Tewksbury, and Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford manages major Air Force electronic systems programmes. Hundreds of machine shops, sheet-metal fabricators, plating houses and special-process suppliers serve these primes. That work calls for PT and MT on machined and forged parts, ET on aerospace alloys, UT on bar, plate and bonded structures, and RT on castings and welded assemblies, usually under prime-contractor procedures and often NAS 410 requirements on top of the supplier's own written practice.

Worcester County and the Blackstone Valley

Central Massachusetts has a long metalworking history. Wyman-Gordon's forging operations in Grafton produce large forgings for aircraft engines, airframes and energy applications, and Worcester's industrial base includes abrasives, machinery, valves and precision components. Forgings and castings need UT for internal soundness, MT and PT for surface flaws and VT throughout. These are classic Level II method jobs where employers want technicians who can read a customer specification as well as a screen.

Boston Harbor: energy terminals, ship repair and infrastructure

Boston Harbor and the Mystic River host the Everett LNG import terminal, fuel and chemical tank farms in Chelsea, Everett and East Boston, the Port of Boston's container and cruise terminals, and a large graving dock in South Boston used for ship repair. Tank and piping integrity work means UT thickness surveys on tank shells, floors and piping, VT and MT on welds, and RT on pressure piping. Around the city, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the MBTA and Massport maintain bridges, tunnels, rail structures and airport facilities that need UT, MT and VT on structural steel and welds, much of it from the era of the Central Artery/Tunnel project and earlier.

South Coast and Cape Cod: offshore wind and marine

New Bedford's Marine Commerce Terminal was built as a staging port for offshore wind, and Vineyard Wind 1, the first utility-scale offshore wind farm in US federal waters, was marshalled from the South Coast. Monopiles, transition pieces, towers and their welded connections are inspected with UT, PAUT, MT and VT, often under offshore-wind and structural codes and client specifications. New Bedford and Fall River also support fishing vessels, ferries and marine fabricators. In Plymouth, the Pilgrim nuclear station shut down in 2019 and is being decommissioned, which still brings occasional specialist inspection and radiological work.

Pioneer Valley and the Berkshires

Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke have a long tradition of precision manufacturing, and Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee supports large military transport aircraft. In Pittsfield, General Dynamics Mission Systems carries on the city's defence engineering work, alongside plastics, paper and machinery manufacturers. MT, PT, UT and VT on components and fabrications dominate, with ET on aircraft maintenance at Westover.

Pipelines and utilities

Interstate natural gas transmission pipelines bring gas into Massachusetts from the south and west, and the Commonwealth's gas distribution utilities run large pipe-replacement programmes. Since the 2018 Merrimack Valley gas explosions in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover, gas safety has had close regulatory and public scrutiny. Pipeline welding and in-service integrity digs call for API 1104 weld inspection, UT thickness and VT, and operator qualification for covered tasks.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Massachusetts employers

Atlantis NDT runs ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based courses in eight methods at Level I and Level II, plus Level III preparation. Massachusetts employers most often need PT, MT, ET and UT for aerospace and defence parts, UT, PAUT and MT for forgings and offshore wind steel, and VT, UT and RT for terminals, bridges and pipelines.

MethodLevelsWhat Massachusetts employers use it forPrerequisite

Candidates aiming for the top of the ladder can take our ASNT Level III training, which covers the Basic exam, method exams and how a Level III applies the written practice. Deeper method courses include UT Level 2 training and the PAUT Level 2 course. Classroom hours and experience by method and level are on the training requirements matrix; your employer's written practice sets the final numbers, so we do not quote hours on this page.

Boston. Greater Boston combines energy and port work in the harbour with infrastructure and a deep layer of high-tech manufacturing in the suburbs. Technicians here can find themselves doing UT thickness on a Chelsea tank one week and PT on machined defence parts in Woburn the next. Many Boston employers prefer theory online, because commuting into a classroom costs more time than the lesson itself, with practicals onsite at the shop or terminal.

Lynn and the North Shore. Engine manufacturing and its suppliers make PT, MT, ET and UT the core methods, and documentation discipline is as important as technique. Prime-contractor audits are frequent, so written practices and training records must hold up.

Worcester and the Blackstone Valley. Forging and casting houses need UT for internal soundness and MT and PT for surface defects. Employers here often want a cohort trained together on their own product forms, which suits an onsite course.

New Bedford and Fall River. Offshore wind brings heavy welded steel, PAUT and TOFD on thick sections, and client inspection specifications that differ from typical domestic structural work. Marine fabrication and vessel repair keep VT and MT in steady demand.

Springfield, Chicopee and Pittsfield. Precision machining, defence systems and aircraft maintenance create demand for MT, PT, ET and UT. Smaller manufacturers here are often building their first formal NDT programme.

Neighbouring hubs: NDT training across the Northeast, Providence and Rhode Island for South Coast employers with sites over the border, New Hampshire for Merrimack Valley crews, Vermont, Bath, Maine for shipbuilding, and New York.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Massachusetts, step by step

Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you, not the Commonwealth and not a training school. You complete method training, log documented on-the-job experience, pass general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III, pass a vision test, and your employer certifies you to its written practice. RT has an extra state layer, covered in the next section.

  1. Employer written practice. Your employer needs a written practice that defines levels, training, experience, exams and recertification. If it does not have one, we can write it.
  2. Formal classroom training. You complete the method training the written practice requires, online, live-virtual or onsite. The training requirements matrix shows the SNT-TC-1A recommended minimums.
  3. On-the-job experience. You log supervised experience in the method on real work, whether engine parts in Lynn, forgings in Grafton or wind steel in New Bedford. The record must be signed and kept.
  4. General exam. A written test on method principles.
  5. Specific exam. A written test on the specifications, procedures and equipment your employer uses, such as a prime contractor's process specification or AWS D1.1.
  6. Practical exam. Hands-on inspection of real specimens with known discontinuities, graded by a Level III.
  7. Vision test. Near-vision acuity and colour-contrast checks, repeated annually.
  8. Certification. Issued by your employer and valid for work with that employer. A new employer re-certifies you under its own written practice, though your documented training and experience carry forward.
  9. Recertification. At the interval your written practice sets, by evidence of continued satisfactory work or by re-examination.

Radiography licensing and other Massachusetts requirements

Massachusetts is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography is regulated by the Radiation Control Program of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health under 105 CMR 120.000, which includes licensing and registration rules for industrial radiographic operations and a state certification for industrial radiographers. RT technicians therefore need state radiation safety qualification in addition to SNT-TC-1A method certification.

Under the Massachusetts rules, a certified industrial radiographer is an individual authorised by the Radiation Control Program after meeting training and experience requirements and passing an approved examination. The employing company must hold the appropriate licence for sealed-source radiography or registration for industrial X-ray equipment, appoint a qualified radiation safety officer, and run a programme of periodic job-performance inspections of its radiographers. Our RT Level I and II courses cover the method side: exposure technique, film and digital image quality, and interpretation. Radiation safety training and the state certification are a separate track that every Massachusetts RT technician must complete as well. Out-of-state companies working in Massachusetts should check the reciprocity requirements, and everyone should confirm the current rules with the Radiation Control Program before field work.

Boilers and pressure vessels. The Department of Public Safety's Engineering Division, within the Office of Public Safety and Inspections, enforces the boiler and pressure vessel law under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 146. Non-residential boilers and pressure vessels must be registered and inspected, and the division also licenses boiler and pressure vessel inspectors and power plant engineers and firemen. Repairs and alterations follow the National Board Inspection Code, which pulls its NDT requirements from ASME Section V and the construction code.

Pipelines. The Pipeline Safety Division of the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities oversees intrastate gas pipeline operators, working with the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), which regulates interstate gas and hazardous-liquid lines. Weld inspection on pipelines commonly follows API 1104.

Codes you will meet in Massachusetts. As local context only: NAS 410 and prime-contractor process specifications in aerospace and defence, ASTM practices for PT, MT, UT and ET, AWS D1.1 and D1.5 for structural steel and bridges, ASME Section V and VIII for pressure equipment, ASME B31.3 and B31.8 for process and gas piping, API 1104 for pipelines, and offshore wind client specifications on the South Coast. Some employers also ask for AWS CWI or API inspector credentials, or ISO 9712 certificates on European-led wind projects; those are separate schemes that Atlantis does not train for. Our training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Massachusetts

Massachusetts crews can take theory live online, join a live-virtual cohort, or have an Atlantis Level III-led programme delivered onsite at their facility. Practical training and practical exams use real specimens, at the employer's site or through a partner arrangement agreed beforehand.

Online theory fits the Commonwealth because congestion around Boston makes a daily commute to a classroom expensive in lost hours. A technician in Pittsfield and one in New Bedford can sit the same live session without either one driving across the state. Sessions are live and interactive, not recorded videos alone, and they cover the general and specific knowledge the written exams test. See NDT training online for details.

Onsite delivery suits manufacturers, terminals and yards that want a group trained on their own parts and procedures. We schedule around what matters locally: production ramps and audits at engine and defence suppliers, offshore wind installation and fabrication campaigns that tend to run hardest in the calmer months, terminal maintenance windows, and winter weather that can make field practicals on bridges and tanks harder. If a campaign or audit is coming, train before it starts.

Practical skill is built on hardware. We plan practical sessions around real specimens, your production parts where appropriate, and the instruments your team actually uses. For multi-site employers, our corporate NDT training programme keeps training records consistent across Massachusetts and other states. Ask about onsite training for your Massachusetts team.

For Massachusetts employers: written practice and Level III services

Every Massachusetts company certifying NDT personnel under SNT-TC-1A needs a written practice and a Level III. Atlantis NDT writes and updates written practices, administers and grades exams, reviews procedures and serves as an outside Level III for companies that do not have one in-house.

This is often where Massachusetts suppliers get stuck. A machine shop in the I-495 belt approved as a special-process source for a defence prime, a Worcester forge adding UT to its quality plan, a New Bedford fabricator bidding on offshore wind secondary steel, or a company whose long-serving Level III has retired cannot certify anyone until the written practice and Level III oversight are in place. Our written practice development service builds a document that fits your methods, specifications and customer audits, and our SNT-TC-1A guidance explains what auditors look for.

Level III support includes procedure and technique writing, exam administration and grading, review of training and experience files, and preparation for customer, prime and registrar audits. For broader programme work, see our NDT consulting services. Book a Level III consultation for your Massachusetts company.

Practise before your practical exam

Practical NDT is Atlantis NDT's 3D simulator. Trainees practise 12 inspection methods in 5 environments: an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It builds familiarity and confidence but is practice only; it does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.

Massachusetts trainees will find the environments familiar. The NDT lab mirrors the inspection rooms of North Shore and Worcester County manufacturers, the aircraft hangar matches maintenance at Westover and Hanscom, the welding workshop reflects marine and wind fabricators on the South Coast, and the storage tank scene matches the terminals around Boston Harbor. Trainees can rehearse set-ups, scan patterns and sequences between classes, then walk into the practical exam knowing what is expected.

Simulator time does not count as on-the-job experience and is not a practical exam. See the Practical NDT simulator overview, or the city pages for Boston and Pittsfield.

Your instructor

Courses are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. As Level III he oversees course content, written practices, exams and practical assessment criteria, so what a Massachusetts technician learns is tied to how that technician will be examined and certified. Questions about methods, written practices or a specific Massachusetts requirement can go to him directly through the contact form.

NDT training in Massachusetts: frequently asked questions

How do I become NDT certified in Massachusetts?

Most Massachusetts NDT technicians are certified by their employer under ASNT SNT-TC-1A: classroom training in a method, documented on-the-job experience, general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III, and a vision test. Radiographers also need Massachusetts industrial radiographer certification from the Department of Public Health's Radiation Control Program.

Is there NDT training online in Massachusetts?

Yes. Atlantis NDT runs live online theory classes that technicians can join from Boston, Worcester, Lynn, New Bedford, Springfield or anywhere else in the state. Practical training and practical exams still need real specimens, arranged onsite at your employer or through an agreed partner.

Do I need a license to do industrial radiography in Massachusetts?

Yes. The company needs a licence or registration from the Radiation Control Program, and individuals performing industrial radiography must be certified by that programme after meeting training and experience requirements and passing an approved exam. This is separate from SNT-TC-1A RT method certification, which you also need. Confirm current requirements with the programme.

How much does NDT training cost in Massachusetts?

Quote on request. The quote depends on method, level, number of trainees, online or onsite delivery, and whether you also need a written practice or exam administration. Send your crew size and methods and we will reply with a cohort or onsite quote within one business day.

Which NDT methods are most in demand in Massachusetts?

PT, MT, ET and UT dominate because aerospace, defence and precision manufacturing are the state's biggest NDT employers. UT, PAUT and MT are in demand for forgings and offshore wind steel, and VT, UT and RT for terminals, bridges and pipelines.

Can you train our team onsite in Boston, Worcester or New Bedford?

Yes. Onsite delivery is available at your facility anywhere in Massachusetts, scheduled around production, audits and campaigns. Atlantis NDT has no physical training centre in the state; onsite means at your site.

Is SNT-TC-1A recognised by Massachusetts employers?

Yes. It is the most common employer-based certification framework in US industry and is referenced by ASME, AWS and many aerospace and defence specifications. Some customers add requirements such as NAS 410, which your written practice should address.

Do I need NAS 410 for aerospace NDT jobs in Massachusetts?

Some aerospace primes and their suppliers require personnel to be qualified to NAS 410 rather than, or in addition to, SNT-TC-1A. Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A-based; if your customer requires NAS 410, check with them how they want training and certification documented.

How long does UT Level II take?

It depends on your employer's written practice, which sets classroom training and experience for each level. SNT-TC-1A recommended minimums are on our training requirements matrix. Logging the experience usually takes longer than the classroom part.

Can I prepare for the ASNT Level III exams from Massachusetts?

Yes. Our ASNT Level III training runs live online and covers the Basic and method exams. Level II candidates can also use the UT Level 2 practice questions.

Does my certification move with me to a new Massachusetts employer?

Not automatically. SNT-TC-1A certification belongs to the employer that issued it. A new employer reviews your records and re-certifies you to its own written practice, which may involve new specific and practical exams. A state radiographer certification is personal and follows the state's own renewal rules.

What do NDT technicians earn in Massachusetts?

Earnings depend on method, level, sector and overtime. For published ranges, see the NDT Level 2 salary and NDT Level 3 salary guides rather than a single headline figure.
