NDT Level 2 Practice Tests: Exam Questions and Answers
Atlantis NDT publishes eight free Level II practice tests, one each for UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET. Each set has 30 original multiple-choice questions grouped by topic, and every question shows the correct answer, a short explanation and the basis for it. The questions are written for study: they are not ASNT or employer examination questions. Under SNT-TC-1A your employer certifies you after the examinations in its written practice, and ASNT also runs central Level II examinations for several methods. Use the sets to find weak topics before either route.
Level II practice tests by method
Each test opens on its own page. Answers stay hidden until you choose to show them, so you can work through a topic before checking.
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Level II practice test: 30 questions in 6 topics: Principles and physics; Equipment, probes and calibration; Angle-beam technique and scanning; Interpretation and evaluation; Codes, procedures and documentation; Method limitations.
- Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) Level II practice test: 30 questions in 6 topics: Phased array principles; Set-up and calibration; Scan planning and coverage; Data analysis and sizing; Codes, procedures and documentation; Method limitations.
- Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) Level II practice test: 30 questions in 6 topics: Principles of diffraction; Probes and PCS set-up; Calibration and data acquisition; Interpretation of TOFD images; Sizing and calculations; Limitations, codes and documentation.
- Radiographic Testing (RT) Level II practice test: 30 questions in 6 topics: Radiation physics and sources; Film, screens, IQIs and digital systems; Exposure calculations; Technique, codes and procedures; Interpretation and evaluation; Radiation safety.
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) Level II practice test: 30 questions in 6 topics: Principles of magnetism; Current types and field direction; Equipment, particles and system checks; Technique and process control; Interpretation and evaluation; Demagnetization and safety.
- Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) Level II practice test: 30 questions in 6 topics: Principles and penetrant systems; Surface preparation and pre-cleaning; Application, removal and development; System checks and process control; Interpretation and evaluation; Post-cleaning, documentation and safety.
- Visual Testing (VT) Level II practice test: 30 questions in 6 topics: Vision, viewing conditions and lighting; Direct and remote viewing equipment; Measurement and weld gauges; Weld and material discontinuities; Procedures, codes and documentation; Examination practice.
- Eddy Current Testing (ET) Level II practice test: 30 questions in 6 topics: Principles and electromagnetic theory; Probes, coils and instrumentation; Standardization and reference standards; Impedance-plane interpretation; Applications and techniques; Codes, procedures and limitations.
How to get the most from a practice test
- Answer each question before you open the explanation, and write your choice down.
- Score yourself by topic, not only overall; the weakest topic is where study time pays back first.
- Re-test after a few days of study and compare topic by topic.
- Pair the questions with practical work: calibration and flaw finding are examined with equipment, not on paper.
ASNT Level II and Level III exam preparation
Preparing for an ASNT examination rather than an employer examination? These guides set out how each examination is organized and what it covers.
- ASNT NDT Level II exam preparation: for ASNT's central Level II examinations.
- ASNT Level III UT exam preparation
- ASNT Level III RT exam preparation
- ASNT Level III MT exam preparation
- ASNT Level III PT exam preparation
- ASNT Level III VT exam preparation
- ASNT Level III ET exam preparation
- ASNT Level III training: the Basic examination, the method examinations and the written-practice knowledge a Level III is tested on.
More practice questions
Free independent study guides on other levels and on the API inspector examinations. Atlantis NDT does not offer API 510, API 570 or API 653 exam preparation and does not administer those examinations.
- UT Level I practice questions: worked answers for ultrasonic testing at Level I.
- API 510 practice questions: independent study guide for pressure vessel inspector candidates.
- API 570 practice questions: independent study guide for piping inspector candidates.
- API 653 practice questions: independent study guide for storage tank inspector candidates.
Training and planning tools
Practice questions check recall. Courses add the classroom hours and practical work that the certification route requires. Atlantis NDT runs NDT training year-round, with theory online and hands-on practice on its Practical NDT simulator or in person at the client's own facility. Simulator practice supports training; it does not replace the practical examination or the experience hours the employer's written practice requires.
- NDT training: courses, delivery formats and how training, examinations and certification fit together.
- NDT Level 2 training
- Online NDT training
- Ultrasonic testing (UT) training
- Radiographic testing (RT) training
- Magnetic particle testing (MT) training
- Penetrant testing (PT) training
- Visual testing (VT) training
- Eddy current testing (ET) training
- SNT-TC-1A hours planner: classroom and on-the-job hours still needed per technician.
- Ultrasonic A-scan simulator: rehearse range, gain and gate settings on a simulated flaw detector in the browser.
- Practical NDT simulator: browser-based practical training between classroom sessions.

Practise the practical, method by method
These questions test theory. The Practical NDT simulator rehearses the practical: set-up, calibration, scanning or exposure, coverage and the report, with each step credited only from recorded evidence.
