Ultrasonic testing is the method most NDT careers are built on, and the one where the gap between holding a certificate and being genuinely competent is widest. Training has to close that gap, not just satisfy the hour count.
UT training starts with wave behaviour, because everything downstream depends on it: longitudinal and shear modes and why angle-beam work is shear-wave work, velocity and its effect on depth calculation, attenuation, the near field and why measurements inside it are unreliable, and beam spread. Candidates who skip this arrive at sizing problems unable to explain why the number on screen is wrong.
Level I performs calibrations and examinations to a written instruction and records results. Training concentrates on instrument setup, calibration blocks, couplant discipline, thickness measurement and recognising when a reading is not trustworthy — a Level I who reports a back-wall echo as wall thickness inside the dead zone is the classic failure.
Level II sets up the technique, interprets against the code and signs the report. This is where angle-beam weld examination, DAC and TCG construction, transfer correction, flaw sizing by amplitude and by tip diffraction, and evaluation against ASME or AWS acceptance criteria are learned properly. Most contracts specify Level II, so this is the level that makes a technician employable.
Level III writes and approves the procedure, qualifies the Level I and II personnel, and answers for the technique when a finding is contested. Preparation covers procedure development, technique justification for the material and geometry, and the code knowledge to defend both.
Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A the employer sets training hours and documented experience hours per method and level in its own Written Practice, so the requirement you must satisfy is your employer's — not a universal number. Under ISO 9712 a central body examines and certifies, and the certificate travels with you between employers. Either way the pattern is the same: classroom or structured theory, supervised practical work, then general, specific and practical examinations. The practical examination is where UT candidates most often fail, and rarely for lack of theory. It tests calibration performed correctly under time pressure, systematic scanning that actually covers the volume, honest recording of what was seen, and evaluation applied consistently. Repetition on real specimens is the only preparation that works — which is why practical time, not classroom hours, is the constraint on how fast a technician qualifies.

Programmes are built and taught by practising ASNT Level IIIs. For companies, delivery is on-site at your facility — the practical work uses specimens representative of what your people actually examine, which is the single biggest difference between training that transfers to the job and training that does not. For individuals, scheduled cohorts and blended delivery combine structured theory with supervised practical. We are straightforward about the model: Atlantis does not operate walk-in training centres, and we will tell you when a local provider is the better answer for a single candidate.
It depends on the level and on how quickly you accumulate documented experience hours, which is usually the binding constraint rather than the coursework. A candidate already working under supervision progresses considerably faster than someone starting cold, because the experience accrues while they work.

Under SNT-TC-1A, no — employer-based certification lapses when you leave, though your documented experience travels with you and the new employer can certify you against their Written Practice. In the US, UT certification runs under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, and your employer's Written Practice is the document that binds. SNT-TC-1A recommends 40 hours of formal training plus 210 hours of UT experience for Level I, and 40 further training hours plus 630 cumulative method hours for Level II. Passing general, specific and practical examinations completes certification.
Two certification routes operate in the United States. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A the employer certifies its own personnel against a Written Practice it authors, and the certification ends when the employment ends. Under ISO 9712 an accredited certification body examines and certifies, and the certificate belongs to the technician. SNT-TC-1A's recommended initial training and experience table lists UT Level I at 40 formal training hours, 210 hours of UT experience and 400 total NDT hours, and UT Level II at 40 further training hours, 630 cumulative UT hours and 1,200 total NDT hours. Level III carries no recommended classroom figure — it is reached through education plus experience comparable to Level II: four years for a high-school graduate, two years with a two-year technical degree, one year with a four-year engineering or science degree. Under SNT-TC-1A, no. The certification is issued by the employer against its own Written Practice and lapses when you leave. Your documented training and experience hours travel with you, and the new employer certifies you against its practice on the strength of that log plus its own examinations. An ISO 9712 certificate is issued to you personally and moves with you.
SNT-TC-1A is a recommended practice — guidance the employer adapts inside its Written Practice. ANSI/ASNT CP-189 is an American National Standard written in mandatory language, so its requirements bind once a contract invokes it, and it requires the employer's NDT Level III to hold ASNT Level III certification. Contracts naming CP-189 remove the employer's freedom to set lower hours.
The experience log sets the pace, not the classroom. 630 cumulative UT hours equals sixteen forty-hour weeks of ultrasonic work alone, and 1,200 total NDT hours must accrue alongside it. A technician employed full time on UT reaches Level II inside a year. One splitting time across five methods takes two years or more. Start the log on day one.
No. Phased array and TOFD are sub-methods. The employer's Written Practice names them separately, and qualification requires documented additional training plus a practical demonstration on encoded data before the certificate covers them. ASNT publishes separate topical outlines for UT phased array and UT TOFD. A Level II who cannot read a raw A-scan will not defend a phased-array sizing call.
SNT-TC-1A recommends recertification at intervals not exceeding five years for every level, by examination or by documented evidence of continuing satisfactory performance. Near-vision acuity is retested annually — Jaeger No. 1 at not less than twelve inches, or an equivalent. ISO 9712 certificates run five years, renew once for a second five years, then require recertification with a practical examination at ten.
ASME BPVC Section V Article 4 for weld examination and Article 5 for materials and components, with acceptance criteria drawn from the referencing construction code — Section VIII for pressure vessels, B31.3 for process piping. Structural steel runs to AWS D1.1 Clause 8. In-service thickness data feeds remaining-life calculation under API 510, 570 and 653.
