Magnetic Particle Testing Training — MT Level I, II and III Certification

Magnetic particle testing looks simple and is taught badly more often than any other method. The theory that matters — field direction, adequacy and demagnetisation — is exactly what a rushed programme skips.

What MT training actually covers

Training covers magnetic fields in ferromagnetic material, permeability and why it varies with heat treatment and stress, circular versus longitudinal magnetisation and why every area needs examining in two perpendicular directions, leakage-field behaviour at a discontinuity, and demagnetisation and when it is required.

MT training by certification level

MT Level I

Level I performs the examination to a written instruction — surface preparation, magnetisation, particle application and recording. Training focuses on technique execution and on field adequacy verification, because a technician who cannot demonstrate the field was adequate has not demonstrated anything.

MT Level II

Level II selects the technique, interprets indications and evaluates against the code. The core skill is distinguishing relevant indications from non-relevant ones — geometry, permeability changes at weld boundaries, magnetic writing — and calling neither a defect nor a false negative.

MT Level III

Level III approves procedures and qualifies personnel, including amperage determination, technique selection for the part geometry, and the process controls that keep a bath or a bench performing between calibrations.

How the pathway is structured

Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A the employer sets training hours and documented experience hours per method and level in its own Written Practice, so the requirement you must satisfy is your employer's — not a universal number. Under ISO 9712 a central body examines and certifies, and the certificate travels with you between employers. Either way the pattern is the same: classroom or structured theory, supervised practical work, then general, specific and practical examinations. The practical examination — where candidates actually fail

The practical examination tests coverage discipline more than anything else. A yoke examines a small patch per placement, so a weld is a mosaic of overlapping placements in two orientations — and a rushed mosaic finds nothing while looking exactly like a completed examination. Candidates are also tested on field indicators and on demagnetisation.

MT applies only to ferromagnetic materials — a limit candidates must understand rather than memorise, because it drives when penetrant testing is the correct method instead. PT training covers the non-magnetic alternative.

Frequently asked questions

How long does MT certification take?

It depends on the level and on how quickly you accumulate documented experience hours, which is usually the binding constraint rather than the coursework. A candidate already working under supervision progresses considerably faster than someone starting cold, because the experience accrues while they work.

Can I train in MT without prior NDT experience?

Yes for Level I — it is designed as an entry point. Level II requires documented Level I experience in the method, so the sequence matters. The Level I route · Level II requirements.

Does MT certification transfer between employers?

Under SNT-TC-1A, no — employer-based certification lapses when you leave, though your documented experience travels with you and the new employer can certify you against their Written Practice. MT certification in the US runs under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, which recommends 12 training hours and 70 MT experience hours for Level I, and 8 further training hours with 210 cumulative MT hours for Level II. ASTM E1444/E1444M and ASTM E709 govern how the examination is performed; the ISO 9934 series is the international equivalent.

MT carries the shortest classroom recommendation of the mainstream weld methods and the highest practical failure rate on coverage discipline. SNT-TC-1A's recommended initial training and experience table lists MT Level I at 12 training hours, 70 hours of MT experience and 130 total NDT hours, and MT Level II at 8 further training hours, 210 cumulative MT hours and 400 total NDT hours. Those are recommendations — the employer's Written Practice binds, and aerospace employers working to NAS 410 set their own figures. Two ASTM documents govern the examination and they are not interchangeable: E709 is a Standard Guide, presenting technique options, while E1444/E1444M is a Standard Practice written in mandatory language, and it is the one aerospace and defence contracts invoke. What is the difference between ASTM E709 and ASTM E1444?

E709 is a Standard Guide — it presents magnetic particle techniques and options without mandating any of them. E1444/E1444M is a Standard Practice, written in mandatory language, and it is the document aerospace and defence contracts invoke. A procedure written to E709 alone satisfies a guide. A procedure written to E1444 satisfies an auditor.

Can magnetic particle testing be used on stainless steel or aluminum?

No for austenitic 300-series stainless, aluminum, copper, titanium and nickel alloys — none are ferromagnetic, so no leakage field forms at a discontinuity. Martensitic and ferritic 400-series stainless and duplex grades are ferromagnetic and are examinable. Where the material is non-magnetic, penetrant testing covers surface-breaking flaws and eddy current covers surface and near-surface flaws.

How is magnetic field adequacy verified during an MT examination?

With an artificial flaw shim or a pie-shaped field indicator placed on the part, not with a meter reading alone. ASME BPVC Section V Article 7 also requires a lifting-power check on yokes at the maximum pole spacing to be used: 10 pounds for an alternating-current yoke and 40 pounds for a direct-current or permanent-magnet yoke.

When is demagnetisation required after magnetic particle testing?

When residual magnetism interferes with what happens next — arc blow during subsequent welding, chip adhesion during machining, instrument error on assembled equipment, or a residual-field limit stated on the drawing. The examination procedure names the requirement and the verification method, and a residual field meter records the result. Demagnetisation is a controlled, documented step.

How often must MT certification and examiner vision be renewed?

SNT-TC-1A recommends recertification at intervals not exceeding five years for all levels. Near-vision acuity is retested annually at Jaeger No. 1 or an equivalent, and colour-contrast differentiation is documented. That second test carries more weight in MT than in most methods, because the decision rests on contrast between the particle indication and the contrast-paint background.

Do I need MT and PT together to be employable in US fabrication?

US fabrication and refinery job postings pair MT, PT and VT as a surface-methods set, because MT covers ferromagnetic material and PT covers everything else. The combined SNT-TC-1A Level I classroom recommendation across all three is 24 hours. The experience log, not the coursework, decides how fast a candidate becomes hireable on all three.
