ASNT SNT-TC-1A is the US route: the employer certifies, and the recommended minimum for ultrasonic testing is 40 hours of classroom plus 210 hours of documented method experience at Level I, then 40 more hours and 630 cumulative hours at Level II. ISO 9712 is the central-certification route used across Europe and the Gulf. No school can certify you under SNT-TC-1A.

Two structures certify NDT technicians and they behave differently. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A the employer holds the certificate, writes the written practice, administers the examinations, and the certification ends when the technician leaves — the route is fast, and the certificate does not travel. Under ISO 9712 an accredited certification body holds the certificate, which moves with the technician between employers and satisfies the European Pressure Equipment Directive route. ANSI/ASNT CP-189 sits between them: still employer-issued, but against a national standard with tighter requirements and an ASNT-administered Level III examination, which is why critical-service specifications name it. Every route counts two separate quantities. Training hours are classroom and laboratory instruction and compress into a scheduled course. Experience hours are documented work in the method under supervision and do not compress — they accrue at the rate the work arrives, which is why an employed technician reaches Level II months ahead of a cold start.

No school certifies anyone under ASNT SNT-TC-1A. The employer certifies, against its own written practice, once the technician meets the training hours, the experience hours, the examinations and the vision test. A school supplies training hours and examination preparation. ISO 9712 is the route where an accredited certification body — not the employer and not a school — issues the certificate.

Which NDT method should a new technician certify in first?

Ultrasonic testing in oil, gas and power; visual first in structural fabrication. UT carries the largest hour requirement, the widest employer demand, and the clearest progression into phased array and API in-service work. Penetrant and magnetic particle certify fastest and add least on their own. Certify against what local employers examine, not across every method thinly.

Does ISO 9712 certification work in the United States?

US employers accept it as evidence of training and examination, then certify the technician under their own written practice to SNT-TC-1A or CP-189, because US construction codes reference the employer-based scheme. ISO 9712 is the required route into European pressure equipment work. Technicians moving between the two markets hold both and bridge by examination rather than starting over.

What does Level III authorise that Level II does not?
