Oil and gas is the largest NDT employment market in the United States and the one where the career mechanics are best understood: the work is corrosion, the calendar is the turnaround, and the governing regime is the API in-service codes. Training for it is training for a system — thickness monitoring programmes, condition monitoring locations, inspection intervals — not just for a method.
The methods oil & gas work actually certifies in
UT is the backbone: thickness surveys at CMLs across crude, vacuum and coker circuits, corrosion mapping where it matters, and shear-wave weld examination on repairs and tie-ins. Phased array has become the turnaround workhorse. RT clears weld acceptance where a permanent image is required. MT matters most in wet H2S service where surface-breaking cracking is a real mechanism; PT covers the stainless and alloy scope. ET runs the exchanger bundles every turnaround.
The governing regime — what acceptance answers to
API 510, 570 and 653 govern vessels, piping and tanks in service, with ASME Section V supplying the method rules and B31.3/Section VIII the construction acceptance. Above the codes sits the operators' own layer: contractor approval, site-specific qualification, and operator standards that gate who works. A technician who understands WHY a CML exists — remaining-life calculation, inspection-interval setting — is worth more than one who can only take the reading.
Who employs certified technicians
The employer base is the densest in NDT: the refining and chemical complexes of the Gulf Coast, the inspection contractors that serve them (from the majors to specialist crews), the midstream operators, and the upstream basins with their own inspection cycles. Hiring is permanently constrained by certified supply, and turnaround season amplifies it.
The career path that works
The proven sequence: VT + MT/PT to get productive, UT Level II as fast as supervision capacity allows — that is the hiring trigger — then the API endorsements (API 570 first in most piping-heavy markets) that move a technician from NDT rates to inspector rates. The API exam calendar sets the rhythm of that second phase.
How people actually enter this sector
Entry is the industry’s most trodden path: helper-to-trainee inside an inspection contractor, school-then-hire, or trade crossover from the crafts that build the plants. The employer-based model means the fastest route is getting hired by a company that certifies — how sponsorship works from the employer side is worth understanding before you apply.
How training is delivered

Oil and gas NDT training in the US qualifies technicians under ASNT SNT-TC-1A to method certification — UT first, then MT, PT, VT, RT and ET — because refinery, midstream and upstream acceptance answers to API 510, 570 and 653 with ASME Section V supplying the method rules. UT Level II is the hiring trigger; API ICP endorsements come later and are examined by API, not by a training provider.

Radiography clears welds where a permanent image is contractually required, magnetic particle covers wet H2S cracking service, penetrant covers the stainless and alloy scope, and eddy current runs exchanger bundles every turnaround. A technician certified to ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level II in ultrasonics is hireable; one who understands why a condition monitoring location exists is promotable.

What certifications do oil and gas employers actually require for NDT technicians?
ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level II in ultrasonics first — that is the hiring trigger — plus MT, PT and VT for the surface scope, and RT Level II with a state or NRC radiation safety card where shooting is in scope. Refinery and midstream contracts then name API ICP credentials for inspector roles: API 510 for vessels, API 570 for piping, API 653 for tanks, API 1169 for pipeline construction.
How many training hours does UT Level II require for refinery work?
ASNT SNT-TC-1A (2020) recommends 40 hours of classroom training for UT Level I and a further 40 hours for Level II, with 210 hours of in-method experience before Level I certification and 630 cumulative in-method hours before Level II. The employer sets the binding figures in its Written Practice, and that document is what an audit reads.
Do I need API 510 or API 570 to work as an NDT technician in a refinery?
No. API 510 and API 570 are inspector certifications issued by API through its Individual Certification Programs, examined by API and gated on documented inspection experience — a bachelor's degree plus one year, a two-year technical certificate plus two years, a high school diploma plus three years, or five years with no formal education. The technician credential underneath is ASNT method certification.
Which NDT methods find corrosion under insulation without stripping the jacket?
Pulsed eddy current screens wall loss through insulation and thin cladding, profile and digital radiography images the pipe wall through the jacket, and guided wave ultrasonics screens long runs from a single access point. API RP 583 places carbon steel CUI susceptibility between 10°F and 350°F, and external chloride stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless between 140°F and 400°F.
How does turnaround season change NDT hiring on the Gulf Coast?
Refinery and petrochemical turnarounds cluster in spring and autumn, and inspection contractors staff against fixed outage windows. UT Level II technicians, phased array operators and RT crews absorb most of that demand, with exchanger bundle eddy current running alongside. Certified supply, not demand, is the constraint, so contractors hire months ahead of the outage schedule and hold crews between windows.
