Oil & Gas NDT Training in Pasadena, Texas
Pasadena is the heart of the ship channel workforce — surrounded by refineries and chemical plants on three sides, home to the craft workforce that turns the units around. NDT hiring here is turnaround-driven and volume-heavy: UT thickness crews, MT/PT on repairs, RT on tie-ins. The practical route in is well worn — helpers become trainees, trainees certify, and the plants are visible from the classroom.
Oil & Gas NDT in brief
Oil and gas is the largest NDT employment market in the United States and the one where the career mechanics are best understood: the work is corrosion, the calendar is the turnaround, and the governing regime is the API in-service codes. Training for it is training for a system — thickness monitoring programmes, condition monitoring locations, inspection intervals — not just for a method.
What oil & gas training covers
UT is the backbone: thickness surveys at CMLs across crude, vacuum and coker circuits, corrosion mapping where it matters, and shear-wave weld examination on repairs and tie-ins. Phased array has become the turnaround workhorse. RT clears weld acceptance where a permanent image is required. MT matters most in wet H2S service where surface-breaking cracking is a real mechanism; PT covers the stainless and alloy scope. ET runs the exchanger bundles every turnaround.
The governing regime
API 510, 570 and 653 govern vessels, piping and tanks in service, with ASME Section V supplying the method rules and B31.3/Section VIII the construction acceptance. Above the codes sits the operators' own layer: contractor approval, site-specific qualification, and operator standards that gate who works. A technician who understands WHY a CML exists — remaining-life calculation, inspection-interval setting — is worth more than one who can only take the reading.
Who employs certified technicians
The employer base is the densest in NDT: the refining and chemical complexes of the Gulf Coast, the inspection contractors that serve them (from the majors to specialist crews), the midstream operators, and the upstream basins with their own inspection cycles. Hiring is permanently constrained by certified supply, and turnaround season amplifies it.
How people enter this sector
Entry is the industry’s most trodden path: helper-to-trainee inside an inspection contractor, school-then-hire, or trade crossover from the crafts that build the plants. The employer-based model means the fastest route is getting hired by a company that certifies — how sponsorship works from the employer side is worth understanding before you apply.

Pasadena, Texas oil and gas NDT training at a glance
Oil and gas NDT training for Pasadena, Texas is ASNT SNT-TC-1A instruction in RT, UT, PAUT, TOFD, MT, PT, VT and ET for the refinery, the Bayport chemical plants, and the pipe-spool and vessel fabrication shops along the ship channel. Atlantis NDT delivers it live online or onsite at your Pasadena shop or plant, with ASNT Level III oversight. Your employer certifies you to its written practice, and radiographers also need Texas DSHS certification. We have no Pasadena classroom.
Pasadena differs from its neighbours because so much of its NDT work is on new metal. Alongside the in-service inspection that every ship-channel city has, Pasadena has a deep base of fabrication and construction: pipe spools, pressure vessels, skids, pipe racks and modules built in local shops for plants across the Gulf Coast. This page covers training for that mix, with radiography and construction-code UT at the centre.
Oil and gas NDT work in Pasadena
Pasadena's industrial geography has three parts. We describe it as context only; no facility named here is presented as an Atlantis customer.
- Ship-channel refining. Chevron's Pasadena Refinery sits on the channel. Chevron finished a light-crude conversion and expansion project there at the end of 2024 and brought it into full operation during 2025. Projects like that bring a wave of construction welds that need examination, followed by a long in-service inspection life.
- The Bayport industrial district. The south side of the city hosts a large cluster of chemical and polymer plants, along with Port Houston's Bayport container terminal. Polymer and specialty-chemical units mean stainless piping, reactors and exchangers, plus a steady turnaround cycle.
- Fabrication and construction. Shops along the channel and around the city build ASME B31.3 pipe spools, ASME Section VIII vessels, structural steel and modular skids. Many of them run shielded radiography bays and have NDT crews on staff or on call.
For an NDT technician, Pasadena is a place where you can learn construction-code acceptance in a shop and then apply in-service techniques at the plant down the road. Both kinds of employer hire from the same local workforce.
Pasadena methods table
| Method | Pasadena oil and gas application | Code or standard (context) |
| RT (X-ray and gamma) | Pipe-spool and vessel butt welds in fabrication shops; field welds on plant expansions and tie-ins | ASME Section V Article 2; B31.3 and Section VIII acceptance; Texas DSHS rules |
| PAUT | Ultrasonic examination of construction welds where B31.3 or Section VIII and the owner allow UT in place of RT; corrosion mapping on in-service equipment | ASME Section V Article 4; code UT-in-lieu-of-RT provisions; owner specifications |
| TOFD | Thick-section vessel welds in fabrication, usually with PAUT | ASME Section V Article 4 |
| UT shear wave | Structural and piping welds; branch connections; repair verification | AWS D1.1 for structural steel; ASME Section V |
| UT thickness | Refinery and chemical-plant CML programmes | Owner API 570 and 510 programmes |
| MT | Fillet and groove welds on carbon steel spools, skids and structural steel | ASME Section V Article 7; AWS D1.1 |
| PT | Stainless and alloy spools for chemical-plant service; root passes on alloy welds | ASME Section V Article 6 |
| VT | Fit-up, in-process and final weld visual in shops; external condition in plants | ASME Section V Article 9; AWS D1.1; B31.3 |
| ET | Exchanger tube inspection during chemical-plant turnarounds | ASME Section V Article 8 |
Method spotlight for Pasadena: RT and the move to PAUT on construction welds. Radiography is still the default for many Pasadena spool and vessel shops, so a technician who can set up a shot correctly, choose the right image quality indicator, interpret film or digital images, and apply B31.3 or Section VIII acceptance criteria is employable straight away. At the same time, more owners and fabricators use PAUT in place of RT to avoid radiation exclusion zones and keep production moving. Technicians who hold both RT and UT are the most useful to local shops. See RT Level II training, radiographic testing training and phased array training. For surface methods on structural and spool welds, see MT Level II and VT Level II.
Certification schemes Pasadena employers look for
| Scheme or requirement | Typical Pasadena employer | Does Atlantis SNT-TC-1A training fit? |

Becoming certified in Pasadena under SNT-TC-1A
- Start with an employer. In Pasadena that is often a fabrication shop or NDT contractor taking on helpers. The employer sponsors your certification.
- Learn the written practice. It defines training and experience hours, exam formats, pass marks and recertification. Shops without a current one can use our written practice development service.
- Complete formal training in theory, technique, code acceptance and safety for each method and level. Compare minimum hours on the training requirements matrix.
- Accumulate supervised experience. Shop production gives steady, predictable hours, which often makes it easier to complete the requirement in a fabrication shop than on a turnaround.
- Sit general, specific and practical exams set or overseen by a Level III. The practical uses real weld specimens with known flaws.
- Take the vision tests. Colour contrast matters for MT and PT indications, and near-vision acuity, retested each year, matters for reading radiographs.
- Receive employer certification and recertify on the written-practice cycle.

Shop radiography, field radiography and Texas DSHS rules in Pasadena
Pasadena has more shop radiography than most ship-channel cities, which raises a few licensing points worth knowing. Texas DSHS regulates industrial radiography under 25 TAC §289.255 as part of Texas's NRC Agreement State programme. The rule covers both radioactive sealed sources and radiation machines used for industrial radiography, and nobody may act as a radiographer without a valid state radiographer certification. New radiographers first complete a qualifying course and work as trainees under a radiographer trainer. State certification cards are issued for a five-year term. Requirements can change, so always check with DSHS.
In a fabrication shop the employer typically radiographs in a shielded bay, under its own licence or registration. Field radiography on plant expansions brings exclusion zones, permits and close coordination with operations. Either way, SNT-TC-1A RT certification (technique and interpretation) and Texas radiographer certification (radiation safety and legal authority) are separate, and a Pasadena radiographer needs both.
Plant access adds further requirements. Facilities with marine docks on the channel and in the Bayport area are subject to maritime security rules, so TWIC is required for unescorted access. Refinery and chemical-plant badging usually requires a contractor safety orientation such as the Houston Area Safety Council's Basic Orientation Plus. Fabrication shop work usually does not need either, which is one reason shops are a common first job.
Delivery options for Pasadena shops and plants
- Onsite in your shop. For a Pasadena fabricator this usually works best. Practicals use your own radiography bay, flaw detectors and production weld samples, with minimal disruption to the production schedule.
- Live online for theory, code acceptance criteria and procedure study, scheduled around shifts. See online NDT training.
- Blended cohorts for plant contractors, with online theory before a Bayport turnaround and onsite practicals and exams afterwards.
Fabrication backlogs and plant outages both affect when people can be released. Tell us your production or outage schedule and we will fit training around it.
Level III and written-practice support for Pasadena companies
Fabrication shops building to ASME codes are audited by customers and by their Authorized Inspection Agency. The NDT personnel side of those audits checks whether the written practice exists, whether it matches the methods performed, whether exams were properly administered and graded, and whether vision tests are current. Atlantis helps Pasadena shops and contractors with:
- Writing or revising the written practice so it covers RT, UT, PAUT, MT, PT and VT as actually used.
- Exam preparation, administration and grading, including practical specimens.
- Reviewing NDT procedures against ASME Section V and customer specifications.
- Outside Level III services. See Level III of record in Pasadena and UT Level III support in Pasadena.
Owner-side programme work is covered on NDT consulting in Pasadena and refining NDT consulting in Pasadena. Multi-site programmes are on corporate NDT training. Book a Level III consultation for your Pasadena shop.
Shop-floor topics a Pasadena course should cover
Generic NDT courses often skip the things that cause rework in a fabrication shop. When we train a Pasadena fabricator's crew onsite, we usually make room for:
- Acceptance criteria by code and fluid service. B31.3 sets different examination extents and acceptance criteria depending on fluid service category, and Section VIII has its own rules for full and spot radiography. Technicians need to know which table applies before they call a weld.
- Weld map and traceability discipline. Linking each radiograph or UT record to the right weld number, welder stamp and spool drawing, so the data book survives the customer's final review.
- Repair and re-examination. What triggers progressive examination after a rejected weld under B31.3, and how repairs are documented and re-shot.
- Image quality on small-bore pipe. Double-wall techniques, IQI selection and placement, and density or digital image-quality checks on the small spools common in chemical-plant work.
- Surface preparation for MT and PT. Grinding, cleaning and post-cleaning on production welds without slowing the line.
These topics sit within the SNT-TC-1A method training and the employer's specific exam. They are not separate credentials, but they are where Pasadena shops lose time and customer confidence when crews are under-trained.
Practise before the practical exam
The Practical NDT simulator has 12 methods in 5 environments, including a welding workshop that is close to a Pasadena fabrication shop and an oil and gas site for plant work. Trainees can practise scanning technique, probe angles and indication recognition between sessions. It is practice only. The practical exam is still done on real specimens, and simulator time does not count as experience.

FAQ: oil and gas NDT training in Pasadena, Texas
Where can I get oil and gas NDT training in Pasadena, TX?
Locally, San Jacinto College runs an NDT programme. Houston-area schools offer classroom courses, many shops and contractors train their own staff, and Atlantis provides employer training live online or onsite at Pasadena facilities. Atlantis has no physical location in Pasadena.
Is RT or UT more useful for a Pasadena fabrication job?
Both. RT is still the default in many spool and vessel shops, while PAUT is increasingly used in place of RT where codes and owners permit. Technicians with both are the most flexible hires.
Do I need a license for shop radiography in Pasadena?
Yes. Anyone acting as a radiographer in Texas, in a shielded bay or in the field, needs a Texas DSHS radiographer certification under 25 TAC §289.255, and the employer must hold the right licence or registration. SNT-TC-1A RT certification is separate.
Does ASME code work require SNT-TC-1A certification?
ASME Section V points to SNT-TC-1A or CP-189 for NDT personnel qualification, implemented through the employer's written practice. Check your code edition and customer specification for the exact requirement.
Is a CWI the same as an NDT certification?
No. AWS CWI is a welding inspector credential. NDT certification under SNT-TC-1A covers specific test methods. Atlantis does not offer CWI training.
Can I study NDT online in Texas?
Yes for theory and codes. Practical exams and experience hours need hands-on work.
How long does RT or UT Level II take?
That depends on your employer's written practice and prior certification. SNT-TC-1A recommends minimum hours, which employers can adjust with justification. See the training requirements matrix, and for UT, our UT Level 2 practice questions.
What does NDT training cost for a Pasadena shop?
We quote on request, based on methods, levels, group size, onsite or online delivery, and any exam or written-practice work. Shops and contractors usually get a cohort or onsite quote within one business day. Request a Pasadena training quote.
Can I use WIOA or GI Bill benefits for NDT training in Pasadena?
Those programmes fund approved providers only. Texas WIOA funding runs through Workforce Solutions and its eligible provider list, and the GI Bill requires a VA-approved programme. Atlantis does not claim either approval, so check with San Jacinto College or another approved school. Employer-paid training is the other common route.
Do I need TWIC to work in Pasadena?
For channel and Bayport facilities with marine docks, yes, for unescorted access. Shop-based fabrication work usually does not need it.
Can Atlantis train welders' helpers in our shop to become NDT trainees?
Yes. Onsite Level I programmes in VT, MT, PT and RT or UT, built around your production work, are a common request. Ask about onsite training for your Pasadena crew.
What do NDT technicians earn in Pasadena?
Earnings depend on method, level, shop or field work, and overtime. We do not publish unsourced local figures; see our NDT salary guide.
