Oil & Gas NDT Training in Billings, Montana
Billings runs the refining corridor of the northern Rockies — two refineries in the metro and more within range — plus the pipeline network converging on them. It is a compact, stable in-service market under the API codes, and the regional contractor base certifies its own technicians, which makes it a genuine entry market rather than a fly-in one.
Oil & Gas NDT in brief
Oil and gas is the largest NDT employment market in the United States and the one where the career mechanics are best understood: the work is corrosion, the calendar is the turnaround, and the governing regime is the API in-service codes. Training for it is training for a system — thickness monitoring programmes, condition monitoring locations, inspection intervals — not just for a method.
What oil & gas training covers
UT is the backbone: thickness surveys at CMLs across crude, vacuum and coker circuits, corrosion mapping where it matters, and shear-wave weld examination on repairs and tie-ins. Phased array has become the turnaround workhorse. RT clears weld acceptance where a permanent image is required. MT matters most in wet H2S service where surface-breaking cracking is a real mechanism; PT covers the stainless and alloy scope. ET runs the exchanger bundles every turnaround.
The governing regime
API 510, 570 and 653 govern vessels, piping and tanks in service, with ASME Section V supplying the method rules and B31.3/Section VIII the construction acceptance. Above the codes sits the operators' own layer: contractor approval, site-specific qualification, and operator standards that gate who works. A technician who understands WHY a CML exists — remaining-life calculation, inspection-interval setting — is worth more than one who can only take the reading.
Who employs certified technicians
The employer base is the densest in NDT: the refining and chemical complexes of the Gulf Coast, the inspection contractors that serve them (from the majors to specialist crews), the midstream operators, and the upstream basins with their own inspection cycles. Hiring is permanently constrained by certified supply, and turnaround season amplifies it.
How people enter this sector
Entry is the industry’s most trodden path: helper-to-trainee inside an inspection contractor, school-then-hire, or trade crossover from the crafts that build the plants. The employer-based model means the fastest route is getting hired by a company that certifies — how sponsorship works from the employer side is worth understanding before you apply.

How training is delivered in Billings
Atlantis delivers training on-site at employer facilities — your equipment, your procedures, your Written Practice — under ASNT Level III oversight. We do not operate walk-in classrooms, and say so plainly: for a company qualifying technicians, on-site delivery is the stronger model, and for individuals, cohorts form around employer demand.

Oil and gas NDT training in Billings: the short answer
Oil and gas NDT training for Billings is ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III instruction in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET for refinery, pipeline and terminal work. It is delivered live online or onsite at your facility in the Billings and Laurel area under ASNT Level III oversight, and your employer's written practice governs certification. Atlantis has no Billings classroom. Cohort and onsite quotes come back within one business day.
Billings is a refining town first. Three refineries sit in or right next to the city, each with its own turnaround calendar, its own owner-user inspection programme and its own approved-contractor list. That gives local NDT employers steadier work than a production basin, but the qualification bar is set by refinery owners whose auditors read written practices line by line. This section explains how training fits that environment, method by method, and what a Billings employer or technician should plan for.
Oil and gas NDT work in Billings and the Yellowstone Valley
The Billings market is built around in-service inspection of refining equipment, supported by the pipelines and terminals that feed crude in and move products out across Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas.
- Par Pacific's Billings refinery. The former ExxonMobil refinery, acquired by Par Pacific in 2023 together with an Upper Rockies logistics system of pipelines and terminals. A high-conversion plant processing Canadian and Rocky Mountain crudes.
- Phillips 66 Billings refinery. Operating since 1947 on a site east of downtown, with its own pipeline connections.
- CHS refinery at Laurel. About 15 miles west of Billings, operating since 1943. Atlantis's Laurel refining NDT consulting page covers that site's context.
- Pipelines and terminals. Crude gathering and long-haul systems bring Canadian, Bakken and Wyoming crude to the refineries, and product pipelines and terminals distribute fuel across the region. Each carries integrity programmes that generate UT, MT and dig verification work.
- Fabrication and repair shops. Billings shops build and repair pressure vessels, piping spools, tanks and structural steel for the refineries and for the wider energy and agricultural economy, which drives production MT, PT, UT and RT on new welds.
What makes Billings distinct for training is the turnaround cycle at three neighbouring refineries. When one plant goes down, contractors need certified Level II technicians in volume, and every technician's certification, vision test and experience records must be current before the gate opens. Employers that plan certification against the turnaround calendar, not against certificate anniversaries, avoid the last-minute scramble. The other distinctive factor is geography: Billings is a long drive from any other refining centre, so contractors build and keep their own certified workforce rather than flying in crews, which makes local training capacity valuable.
Which NDT methods Billings oil and gas employers use
| Method | Oil and gas application in Billings | Code or standard usually in play |
| UT (thickness and shear wave) | Thickness surveys at condition monitoring locations on crude, vacuum, hydrotreater and coker circuits; weld examination on repairs and replacements | API 570 and API 510 owner programmes; ASME Section V Articles 4 and 5 |
| PAUT | Turnaround weld examination in place of RT; corrosion mapping on vessels and piping; tank floor and shell work | ASME Section V; ASME B31.3; owner procedures |
| TOFD | Thick-wall vessel and reactor welds, often combined with PAUT | ASME Section V; ASME Section VIII code cases where accepted |
| RT | Acceptance of new and repair welds on process piping; pipeline girth welds; profile RT for corrosion under insulation | ASME B31.3; API 1104; ASME Section V Article 2 |
| MT | Crack detection in wet H2S and caustic service, on structural attachments and at pipeline digs | ASME Section V Article 7 |
| PT | Stainless and alloy piping, exchanger components, valve and pump bodies | ASME Section V Article 6 |
| VT | Internal vessel inspections during turnarounds, weld visual, tank inspections | ASME Section V Article 9; API 510, 570 and 653 programmes |
| ET | Heat exchanger and air cooler tube testing during turnarounds | ASME Section V Article 8; owner procedures |
Method spotlight for Billings: ET on exchanger bundles. Every refinery turnaround pulls exchanger bundles, and tube testing is one of the most schedule-critical NDT scopes on the critical path. Eddy current, along with the related tube techniques your owner specifies, needs technicians who can set up on reference tubes, interpret signals from support plates and dents, and report clearly enough that the owner can decide plug-or-replace in hours, not days. In a market with three refineries, a contractor that can field certified ET Level II technicians has a real advantage.
Corrosion under insulation and cold-climate work. Montana winters make CUI a live issue on insulated lines, and they also limit outdoor examinations. Penetrant and magnetic particle work outside the standard temperature range in ASME Section V needs a procedure qualified for the conditions, and couplant and battery performance change in deep cold. The method courses cover these limits so technicians recognise when a procedure does not apply.
Which certification scheme Billings refinery employers expect
Refinery owners in Billings expect their NDT contractors to certify personnel to ASNT SNT-TC-1A through a written practice, then add their own contractor approval and procedure requirements on top. Atlantis trains to SNT-TC-1A only; the other credentials below are context for what local employers also ask for.
| Scheme or credential | Who asks for it in Billings | Does SNT-TC-1A training fit? |
| ASNT SNT-TC-1A (employer written practice) | NDT contractors working for all three refineries; pipeline and terminal operators | Yes. This is what Atlantis trains to |
| Owner contractor approval and site procedures | Refinery owners, through their inspection departments | Partly. Training prepares technicians; the owner's approval and procedure demonstrations are separate gates |
| API 510, 570 or 653 inspector certification | Owner-user inspectors and contract inspectors who sign off inspection plans | No. Inspector certifications, not NDT technician certifications. Atlantis does not train for them |
| API QUTE and related performance demonstrations | Some owners for UT thickness or flaw-sizing scopes | No. A separate performance test; SNT-TC-1A UT training builds the foundation only |
| Pipeline operator qualification (OQ) | Pipeline operators for covered tasks | No. A separate federal requirement |
| AWS CWI | Fabrication and construction QA | No. Atlantis does not train for it |
The SNT-TC-1A training and certification guide explains the employer-based model in detail.
The SNT-TC-1A certification path for Billings technicians, step by step
- The employer's written practice. The company defines its methods, levels, training and experience hours, exam rules and vision requirements, approved by a responsible Level III.
- Formal classroom training. Theory, technique, procedures and the applicable codes for the method and level. For Billings crews this can run live online.
- Documented experience. Hours performing the method under qualified supervision, logged against the written practice. The training requirements matrix shows the SNT-TC-1A recommended minimums by method and level.
- Exams. General, specific and practical examinations administered under a Level III. The practical uses real specimens and must be hands-on.
- Vision test. Near-vision and colour contrast, typically annual.
- Certification. The employer certifies the technician to its written practice.
- Recertification and turnaround readiness. Recertify at the interval in your written practice, and check vision and certification dates against the next turnaround window, not the calendar year.

Radiography licensing in Montana
Montana is not an NRC Agreement State. That means the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, through its Region IV office in Arlington, Texas, licenses and inspects the use of radioactive sources for industrial radiography in Montana. The state retains jurisdiction over X-ray equipment and certain other radiation sources. In practice, a radiography contractor working gamma sources at a Billings refinery or on a pipeline spread needs an NRC materials licence, or an Agreement State licence plus the NRC's permission to work in a non-Agreement State, and X-ray work involves the state programme.
Individual radiographers must meet the NRC's industrial radiography rules in 10 CFR Part 34, which include radiation safety training, a recognised radiographer certification, the two-person rule at temporary job sites, and dosimetry and alarm ratemeter requirements. Radiation safety certification and SNT-TC-1A RT certification are separate: one makes it lawful to handle the source, the other qualifies the technician to perform and interpret the examination. Atlantis teaches RT technique and interpretation under SNT-TC-1A. Confirm the radiation safety requirements with your company's radiation safety officer and with NRC Region IV.
Refinery access adds its own steps: owner safety orientation, drug and alcohol testing, H2S awareness and permit-to-work training. None of these are NDT certifications, but all of them are gates.
Online, live-virtual or onsite: how training reaches Billings
Atlantis does not operate a training centre in Billings or elsewhere in Montana. Training reaches Billings employers in three ways:
- Live online theory. Instructor-led classroom hours that technicians attend from home or the shop, scheduled outside shift patterns. See online NDT training.
- Onsite practicals at your facility. A Level III runs hands-on training and practical exams at your Billings or Laurel shop, using your instruments, your reference standards and specimens representative of refinery work: corroded pipe, weld coupons with known flaws, exchanger tube samples.
- Blended turnaround-prep cohorts. Theory online in the months before a turnaround, then an onsite block for practicals, exams and vision tests timed so every technician is current when the owner checks records at mobilisation.
Individuals can join employer cohorts, but certification still requires a sponsoring employer's written practice. The corporate NDT training page explains how cohorts are scoped.

Level III services and written practices for Billings NDT companies
A Billings contractor that wants onto, or stay on, a refinery's approved list needs a written practice that matches what it actually does, procedures that reference the owner's codes, and certification files that are complete. Atlantis supports that with:
- Written practice development and review for SNT-TC-1A programmes. See written practice development.
- Outside Level III services: exam administration, procedure approval and personnel qualification for firms without a full-time Level III. The Billings refining NDT consulting page and the Billings NDT consulting page cover these services.
- Pre-audit record reviews before an owner's contractor audit or a turnaround mobilisation.
- Procedure writing for UT thickness, PAUT, RT, MT, PT and ET tied to ASME Section V, B31.3 and the owner's specifications.

Practise before the practical exam
The Practical NDT simulator lets trainees practise 12 NDT methods in 5 3D environments, including an oil and gas site and a storage tank. Billings trainees can rehearse UT scan plans, MT technique and indication recognition before the hands-on sessions. It is practice only: it does not replace training on real specimens or the practical exam your Level III administers. The Practical NDT page for Billings shows how employers combine it with onsite sessions, and the UT Level 2 practice questions help with the written exams.
Your instructor
Training and Level III oversight are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. Billings cohorts are taught online and at the employer's facility under his oversight, along with written practice and exam work.
Local NDT training options compared for Billings
We could not confirm a dedicated NDT certificate or degree programme in Billings at the time of writing. The realistic options are:
| Option | What it is | Where it fits |
| In-house training at a Billings contractor | Trainee route inside an inspection company with its own or a contracted Level III | The most common entry route; depends on being hired first |
| College NDT programmes in nearby states | Multi-semester programmes such as Salt Lake Community College in Utah and Ridgewater College in Minnesota | Career changers who can relocate for a programme |
| Classroom schools elsewhere | Private NDT schools running fixed-date method courses in other states | Individuals who can travel for each course |
| Self-paced online providers | Recorded formal-hours courses | Theory only; practicals and exams still needed |
| Atlantis NDT | Live online theory and onsite practicals at your facility under ASNT Level III oversight, plus written practice and Level III services | Billings employers certifying crews against a turnaround calendar |
