Oil & Gas NDT Training in Houston, Texas

Houston is the densest NDT employment market in North America — the ship channel refineries and chemical complexes, the fabrication belt building vessels and modules, and the inspection contractors' national headquarters. Every method hires here, but the turnaround economy makes UT thickness/corrosion work and exchanger ET the steady core. For a new technician, Houston offers the shortest distance between certification and full employment anywhere in the country.

Oil & Gas NDT in brief

Oil and gas is the largest NDT employment market in the United States and the one where the career mechanics are best understood: the work is corrosion, the calendar is the turnaround, and the governing regime is the API in-service codes. Training for it is training for a system — thickness monitoring programmes, condition monitoring locations, inspection intervals — not just for a method.

What oil & gas training covers

UT is the backbone: thickness surveys at CMLs across crude, vacuum and coker circuits, corrosion mapping where it matters, and shear-wave weld examination on repairs and tie-ins. Phased array has become the turnaround workhorse. RT clears weld acceptance where a permanent image is required. MT matters most in wet H2S service where surface-breaking cracking is a real mechanism; PT covers the stainless and alloy scope. ET runs the exchanger bundles every turnaround.

The governing regime

API 510, 570 and 653 govern vessels, piping and tanks in service, with ASME Section V supplying the method rules and B31.3/Section VIII the construction acceptance. Above the codes sits the operators' own layer: contractor approval, site-specific qualification, and operator standards that gate who works. A technician who understands WHY a CML exists — remaining-life calculation, inspection-interval setting — is worth more than one who can only take the reading.

Who employs certified technicians

The employer base is the densest in NDT: the refining and chemical complexes of the Gulf Coast, the inspection contractors that serve them (from the majors to specialist crews), the midstream operators, and the upstream basins with their own inspection cycles. Hiring is permanently constrained by certified supply, and turnaround season amplifies it.

How people enter this sector

Entry is the industry’s most trodden path: helper-to-trainee inside an inspection contractor, school-then-hire, or trade crossover from the crafts that build the plants. The employer-based model means the fastest route is getting hired by a company that certifies — how sponsorship works from the employer side is worth understanding before you apply.

How training is delivered in Houston

Atlantis delivers training on-site at employer facilities — your equipment, your procedures, your Written Practice — under ASNT Level III oversight. We do not operate walk-in classrooms, and say so plainly: for a company qualifying technicians, on-site delivery is the stronger model, and for individuals, cohorts form around employer demand.

Oil and gas NDT training in Houston: the short answer

Short answer: Atlantis NDT trains Houston inspection contractors, refinery and chemical plant crews and fabrication shops to ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level I, II and III in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET. We do not run a Houston classroom. Theory is delivered live online, practicals run onsite at your facility on real specimens under an ASNT Level III, and your employer certifies you under its written practice.

Houston is crowded with established NDT schools, so this section does not pretend to be another one. It is written for the employer who needs a crew upgraded to Level II before turnaround season without sending six people across town for a week, for the inspection company that needs a Level III to fix its written practice before an operator audit, and for the working technician who wants instructor-led theory in the evenings while staying on the job. If you want a full-time campus programme, Houston has good ones, and they are listed honestly further down.

Oil and gas NDT work in Houston

The Houston Ship Channel and the bay shore around it hold one of the world's largest concentrations of refining and petrochemical capacity. Refineries and chemical complexes in Baytown, Deer Park, Pasadena, Channelview, La Porte and Texas City run inspection programmes that keep certified technicians busy year-round, and spike sharply during spring and autumn turnarounds when units come down for planned maintenance. Each turnaround brings thousands of inspection points: thickness readings at condition monitoring locations, weld examinations on repairs and new tie-ins, exchanger tube testing and vessel internals.

Behind the plants sits the fabrication belt: shops in the east and north Harris County corridors building pressure vessels, heat exchangers, process modules, skids and pipe spools for projects around the world. Their inspection work is new construction under ASME Section VIII and B31.3, with RT, UT and increasingly PAUT on welds and MT and PT on surfaces. Midstream adds pipeline and compressor station work under API 1104 and ASME B31.4 and B31.8, and the Gulf Coast LNG export terminals bring cryogenic stainless and nickel steel welding with heavy PT and RT demand. Offshore operators and their contractors, many headquartered in the Energy Corridor, add subsea and topsides scope.

Houston is also where most national inspection contractors have head offices or major branches. That matters for training because these firms run large SNT-TC-1A programmes, recruit constantly, and often prefer to upgrade technicians they already employ rather than hire new ones before a busy season.

Which NDT methods Houston oil and gas work uses, and under which rules

This table is context for planning training. The owner's specification and the contract always decide which code, edition and acceptance criteria apply.

MethodOil and gas application in HoustonCode or standard usually cited
UT (Level I, II, III)Thickness surveys at CMLs on piping and vessels; shear-wave weld examination on repairs and new constructionASME V Article 4 and 23; API 570 and 510 owner programmes; ASME VIII and B31.3 acceptance
PAUTTurnaround weld examination, corrosion mapping, RT replacement on fabrication welds where the code permitsASME V Article 4; ASME code cases and owner specifications
TOFDFlaw sizing on thick vessel and piping welds; in-service crack monitoringASME V; owner specification
RTPipe spool and vessel welds in fabrication; pipeline girth welds; profile RT for corrosion under insulationASME V Article 2; B31.3; API 1104
MTSurface cracking in wet H2S and caustic service; fabrication weld surfacesASME V Article 7; owner procedures
PTStainless and nickel alloy welds, especially in LNG and chemical serviceASME V Article 6
VTWeld visual inspection, vessel internals during turnarounds, fit-up checks in fabricationASME V Article 9; B31.3; AWS D1.1 for structural steel
ETHeat-exchanger and condenser tubing during turnarounds; surface crack detectionOwner specifications; ASME V Article 8

Method spotlight: PAUT and TOFD for turnaround welds. Turnaround schedules leave little time for film, and owners increasingly accept encoded PAUT, often paired with TOFD for sizing, on repair and tie-in welds. That has created steady demand for Level II PAUT technicians who also understand the underlying UT theory well enough to defend a scan plan. A crew upgrade that builds conventional UT to Level II first, then adds PAUT, is the most common request we see from Gulf Coast employers.

Which certification scheme Houston oil and gas employers expect

Atlantis trains to ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Other schemes appear below so you know what your employer may also ask for, not because we offer them.

SchemeWho in Houston requires itDoes SNT-TC-1A training fit?
ASNT SNT-TC-1A (employer-based)Inspection contractors, fabrication shops, refinery and chemical plant contractors, pipeline contractorsYes. It is the dominant scheme for NDT technicians in Houston, and what we train to.
Owner contractor-approval programmesRefineries and chemical plants that test or vet contract technicians before site accessYes as preparation. The owner's own practical tests sit on top of your employer certification.
API 510, 570 and 653 inspector certificationsOwner-user inspection departments for vessels, piping and tanksNo. These are API inspector credentials, separate from NDT technician certification. We do not offer API inspector training.
API QUTE and QUPASome owners require these API individual certification programmes for UT thickness or PAUT performancePartly. Strong SNT-TC-1A UT and PAUT training is the foundation; the API programmes are separate exams we do not provide.
AWS Certified Welding InspectorFabrication shops and owner QA for weld inspection leadsNo. CWI is a separate AWS credential that we do not train.
ISO 9712International projects and some foreign operatorsNo. ISO 9712 is a central certification scheme; we train to SNT-TC-1A only.

For most Houston technicians the order of priority is clear: a solid employer-certified SNT-TC-1A Level II in the methods your company bills, then the owner and API add-ons your clients require.

The SNT-TC-1A certification path for Houston technicians, step by step

  1. Your employer's written practice. SNT-TC-1A is employer-based; each company's written practice sets training hours, experience, exams and who signs certifications. See written practice development.
  2. Formal training. Theory in the method and level. Recommended minimums are in our training requirements matrix; your written practice sets the actual hours.
  3. On-the-job experience. Logged and supervised work on real components. In Houston, turnaround seasons can deliver a lot of experience quickly, provided it is documented as it happens.
  4. Examinations. General, specific and practical exams administered and graded by a Level III, with the practical on real specimens.
  5. Vision examination. Near-vision and colour contrast checks on the written practice's schedule.
  6. Employer certification. Signed by your employer and valid under its written practice.
  7. Recertification. At the interval the written practice defines.

Radiation licensing and TWIC for Houston crews

Texas is an NRC Agreement State, and the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Radiation Control Program licenses industrial radiography companies and their sources. Texas rules for industrial radiography, in 25 TAC §289.255, also set training and certification requirements for individual radiographers and radiographer trainees that are separate from SNT-TC-1A. An RT method course from any provider does not satisfy those requirements by itself. Your radiation safety officer will tell you what your company's licence requires.

Ship Channel work brings one more credential. Refineries and terminals with marine docks, and other facilities regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act, require a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) for unescorted access. Many Houston employers expect new hires to arrive with one, so apply early. Site-specific safety orientations, which most plants require before work begins, are run by the owners and their safety councils.

How Houston crews can take the training

Timing is everything in a turnaround economy. The best window to upgrade a crew is usually the quieter months before spring and autumn turnaround season, so the newly certified Level IIs are ready when the work arrives. Ask about a pre-turnaround crew upgrade in Houston.

What a Houston employer receives from an onsite course

Each technician leaves with a training record showing method, level, hours, dates, course outline and instructor; graded exam records where Atlantis administers exams under your written practice; a description of the practical specimens; and a note on any gaps between your procedures and the owner specifications you work to. Those records are built to drop straight into certification files, so an operator's contractor audit can trace every hour without a scramble.

Level III services and written practices for Houston NDT companies

Houston has a large number of small and mid-size inspection firms, and many of them run on a written practice that was copied years ago and never updated. We provide written practice development, procedure review against owner specifications, exam administration and ongoing Level III support, plus multi-method programmes through corporate NDT training and oil and gas corporate training. For local consulting, see NDT consulting in Houston, refining NDT consulting in Houston, ASNT Level III consulting in Houston and Level III of record in Houston. Book a Level III consultation before your next operator audit.

Practise before the practical exam

The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees practise 12 methods in five environments, including an oil and gas site, a storage tank and a welding workshop. It helps with set-up, scan coverage and indication recognition between theory sessions. It is practice only and never replaces the practical exam on real specimens.

Your instructor

Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who sets course content, administers and grades examinations where your written practice assigns that role to Atlantis, and reviews employer written practices.
