Curriculum Coverage
The Kansas City offer is ASNT NDT Level III exam preparation for the Basic and Method examinations, plus SNT-TC-1A Level III services for employers: Written Practice authoring and review, procedure approval, and Level I and II examination and certification under the employer's own written practice. Aerospace employers working to NAS 410 or EN 4179 certify their personnel themselves, under their written practice and a Responsible Level 3; Atlantis does not deliver or examine NAS 410, EN 4179 or ISO 9712 qualification. ASNT publishes the current exam format, question counts and testing-centre arrangements; check asnt.org. Codes such as ASME B&PV Section V and the ASME B31 piping series appear as context for procedure writing, not as separate certifications.

ASNT Level III exam preparation in Kansas City: how it works
Short answer: Kansas City candidates prepare for the ASNT NDT Level III Basic exam and one or more method exams through self-paced online modules with ASNT NDT Level III support, or through an onsite cohort at their employer's facility in the metro. ASNT sets the eligibility rules, runs the exams and issues the certificate. Atlantis NDT prepares you for them, checks your eligibility first, and helps your employer plan what happens after you pass.
That last point matters more in Kansas City than in many metros. A large share of Level III candidates here are not working for an inspection company at all. They sit inside engineering and construction firms, manufacturing plants, utilities and rail operators, where the Level III is the person who signs procedures, approves technique sheets and answers to an auditor or a federal customer. The preparation has to fit that reality: people who are strong in one method, busy with a day job, and studying around project deadlines on both sides of State Line Road.
This page sets out who should be preparing, how ASNT's eligibility routes work, what the exams look like, how we structure a study plan, and what Kansas City employers do when they need Level III authority before a candidate is ready. If you already know what you need, request a Kansas City Level III prep quote and we will reply within one business day.
What an NDT Level III actually does in a Kansas City programme
A Level I performs specific tests under instruction. A Level II sets up equipment, performs and interprets tests against an established procedure and reports results. A Level III is the technical authority behind all of that. Under ASNT's Recommended Practice SNT-TC-1A and the ANSI/ASNT CP-189 standard, the Level III is the person who establishes techniques and procedures, interprets codes and specifications, selects the method and technique for a given job, and is responsible for the training and examination of Level I and II personnel under the employer's written practice.
In practical Kansas City terms, that means the Level III is the person who:
- writes or approves the ultrasonic procedure an EPC contractor's field crew will use on a power-plant or pipeline tie-in weld, and defends it when the owner's engineer asks how it was qualified;
- reviews radiographs or digital images on a fabrication job and settles borderline indications against the acceptance criteria of the governing code;
- signs the written practice that certifies a manufacturer's in-house magnetic particle and penetrant inspectors;
- administers the general, specific and practical examinations for Level I and II technicians, and keeps the records an auditor will ask to see;
- answers technical questions from customers, regulators and quality auditors about why a method was chosen and what it can and cannot detect.
None of that is done by passing an exam alone. The exams test whether you have the knowledge base. The role is earned through experience, which is why ASNT's eligibility routes are built around experience first.
Who is eligible: ASNT's education and experience routes
ASNT publishes three routes to sit the NDT Level III examinations. Each route combines education with experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in the method you want to certify. The more relevant formal education you have, the less NDT experience ASNT asks for. The current requirements, including exactly how ASNT counts experience, are on ASNT's own certification pages, and we summarise how candidates document them in our NDT Level III certification requirements guide.
| ASNT route | Education | Experience ASNT expects | Typical Kansas City candidate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Degree route | Four-year degree in engineering or a physical science | The shortest Level II-comparable experience period of the three routes | A welding, materials or QA engineer at an EPC or manufacturer who has been working alongside NDT crews |
| Partial-degree route | At least two academic years of engineering or physical-science study | A longer Level II-comparable experience period than the degree route | A technician who completed engineering-technology coursework before moving into inspection |
| Experience route | No college requirement | The longest Level II-comparable experience period | A senior Level II field technician who has run UT, RT or MT crews for years |
Three practical notes from the candidates we see:
- Experience must be in the method. A UT Level II with years of ultrasonic work is not automatically eligible for the radiography method exam. Plan the method you sit around the work you have actually done.
- Documentation is where applications stall. Kansas City technicians often move between contractors on project work. Get letters or records from previous employers early; it is much harder to reconstruct experience two employers later.
- Eligibility to sit is not the same as being ready. Many eligible candidates are strong in their own method and uneven on materials, other methods and certification rules. That gap is what the preparation targets.
If you are not sure where you stand, send us your history before you apply to ASNT. We read it the way a reviewer will and tell you plainly whether it looks sufficient. Our Level II to Level III pathway guide covers the typical progression.
The exams: the Basic plus at least one method exam
A first-time ASNT NDT Level III candidate must pass the Basic examination and at least one method examination. The Basic is taken once. Each additional method you add later needs only its own method exam. ASNT publishes the current question counts, time limits, passing criteria and testing arrangements; we prepare you against those published figures rather than repeating them here, because ASNT revises them from time to time.
| Exam | What it tests | Where Kansas City candidates usually struggle | Prep page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Certification rules (SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, CP-105), materials and process technology, codes and procedures, Level II-depth familiarity with other methods | Materials and processes for candidates from field roles; method-selection questions outside their own method | Level III Basic exam prep |
| UT method | Ultrasonic principles, equipment, techniques, calibration, interpretation, procedure content | Calculation items and technique selection for unusual geometries | Level III UT exam prep |
| RT method | Radiation physics, sources, exposure, image quality, film and digital radiography, safety, interpretation | Exposure and unsharpness calculations; digital radiography content for film-trained candidates | Level III RT exam prep |
| MT method | Magnetisation theory, techniques, equipment, field indicators, demagnetisation, interpretation | Theory beyond yoke work for candidates from structural or automotive QA | Level III MT exam prep |
| PT method | Penetrant systems, removal methods, sensitivity, process controls, interpretation | Process-control and system-check detail that daily field use skips | Level III PT exam prep |
| VT method | Visual principles, lighting and vision, direct and remote examination, weld and component discontinuities | Optics and remote-equipment theory for weld-inspection specialists | Level III VT exam prep |
| ET method | Electromagnetic theory, impedance-plane analysis, probes, frequency selection, applications | Theory depth for candidates who have only used conductivity or surface probes | Level III ET exam prep |

Who certifies you: ASNT administers the exam, Atlantis prepares you
This is the point people most often get wrong, so it is worth being direct. Atlantis NDT does not issue ASNT NDT Level III certificates and does not run the ASNT examinations. ASNT administers its NDT Level III programme: it reviews your application, schedules the examinations through its testing arrangements, and issues the certificate. ASNT also runs central certification programmes for other levels (the scheme long known as ASNT 9712 (formerly ACCP) has been folded into ASNT's current central offerings). What Atlantis provides is preparation: instruction, diagnostic and timed practice, study planning, and Level III-to-Level III coaching on the material.
There is a second layer that Kansas City employers need to understand. Holding the ASNT NDT Level III certificate shows you passed ASNT's exams and met its eligibility rules. Under SNT-TC-1A, your employer still certifies you as its Level III under its own written practice, and many written practices also require a specific examination covering the employer's own codes, procedures and products. CP-189 programmes, common in power generation and some defence work, tie the Level III more closely to the ASNT certificate. Either way, the employer's document governs. If your employer's written practice is out of date or does not describe the Level III's duties clearly, that is worth fixing at the same time; see written practice development and SNT-TC-1A training and certification.
ASNT NDT Level III certificates are renewed on a five-year cycle, either by documenting renewal points for continued Level III activity or by retaking the method examination. Our note on Level III recertification points explains how holders usually keep the record.
A study plan built around a Kansas City working week
Exam preparation is measured in weeks; the experience that makes you eligible is measured in years. Most of the Kansas City candidates we talk to are already eligible or close to it, and the real constraint is study time around project schedules, outage support and travel. The plan below is the structure we start from. Its length depends on your diagnostic results and the number of methods you are sitting, so we set it with you rather than promise a fixed calendar.
- Eligibility check and diagnostic. We confirm your route, review how your experience is documented, and run a diagnostic across all Basic domains and your chosen method. The output is a personal gap map.
- Certification rules first. SNT-TC-1A, CP-189 and CP-105 are read in full, not from summaries. This is the cheapest part of the Basic to master and the part experienced field technicians most underestimate.
- Materials and processes. Casting, forging, rolling, welding and heat treatment, plus service damage such as fatigue, corrosion and hydrogen damage, always tied back to which discontinuity each process creates and which method finds it. Candidates from automotive or EPC backgrounds often move faster here; field technicians usually need more time.
- Other methods at Level II depth. Method-selection drills across RT, UT, MT, PT, ET and VT, so the Basic's "which method would you choose" items stop being guesses.
- Method exam depth. Principles, calculations, technique selection and procedure content for each method you are sitting, with worked problems.
- Timed practice and error log. Timed sections early, full timed mocks later, and an error log that drives the final review.
- Go / no-go decision. If the mock results say you are not ready, we tell you to move the appointment. Rescheduling is cheaper, in every sense, than a retake.
Sessions run self-paced online so that a candidate in Overland Park, Lee's Summit or Liberty can study from home or the office without commuting. For employer cohorts, we can schedule sessions around shift patterns and planned outages, and combine online theory with onsite sessions at the employer's facility where hands-on procedure-writing exercises benefit from the employer's own equipment and parts. There is no Atlantis training centre in Kansas City; training is delivered online or at your facility.
Kansas City employers that need Level IIIs (context)
The Kansas City metro is not a refinery-corridor market like the Gulf Coast. Level III demand here is spread across several distinct sectors, and the codes and customer requirements differ in each. The examples below are context for where Level III authority is typically needed; they are not Atlantis customers.
- Engineering, procurement and construction. The metro is home to large engineering and construction firms, including Burns & McDonnell in Kansas City, Missouri and Black & Veatch in Overland Park, Kansas, working on power, utility, pipeline and industrial projects nationwide. Their QA organisations and subcontracted NDT providers need Level IIIs who can review procedures against ASME Section V, ASME B31.1 and B31.3 piping requirements, AWS D1.1 for structural steel and API 1104 for pipeline welding.
- Federal manufacturing. The Kansas City National Security Campus, operated for the National Nuclear Security Administration, manufactures non-nuclear components. Work for federal programmes typically brings strict documentation and personnel-qualification expectations defined by the customer's contract.
- Automotive assembly and suppliers. Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo and General Motors' Fairfax Assembly in Kansas City, Kansas anchor a supplier base where weld, casting and component quality programmes use VT, PT, MT and UT.
- Rail. Kansas City is one of the largest rail hubs in the country. Rail car, wheel, axle and bridge inspection programmes rely on UT, MT and VT, with industry rather than ASME acceptance standards.
- Power generation. Within reach of the metro are the Wolf Creek Generating Station near Burlington, Kansas and the Callaway Energy Center near Fulton, Missouri, plus fossil and renewable assets operated by regional utilities. Nuclear work typically references ASME Section XI and CP-189-based programmes.
- Kansas refining and aerospace. Refineries at Coffeyville, El Dorado and McPherson, and the aerostructures and general-aviation plants around Wichita, draw on Kansas City-based Level IIIs and contractors. Aerospace work commonly follows NAS 410; Atlantis training remains SNT-TC-1A-based, and we mention NAS 410 only as what some employers also ask for.
- Bridges and public infrastructure. Missouri River and Kansas River crossings, and the steel bridges managed by MoDOT and KDOT, drive UT, MT and VT work on fabrication and in-service inspection, usually to AWS D1.5.
Because the market is spread out, a Kansas City Level III is more often a multi-method generalist than a single-method specialist. That has a direct effect on preparation: candidates frequently plan two or three method exams, and the Basic's broad method-familiarity content is less of a stretch for them than for a pure UT technician. For the wider Level I and II picture in the metro, see NDT training in Kansas City, plus the state pages for Missouri and Kansas and the nearby Wichita and St. Louis pages.
Radiography licensing on both sides of State Line
Level III radiography candidates in Kansas City work across two regulatory systems. Missouri is not an NRC Agreement State, so radioactive-materials licensing for industrial radiography sources in Missouri sits with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Kansas is an Agreement State, so the Kansas Department of Health and Environment regulates radioactive materials there. A Level III who writes radiography procedures for crews that cross the state line needs to know which regulator's rules, licence conditions and radiographer qualification requirements apply on each job. The RT method exam tests radiation safety principles; the practical licence conditions come from your employer's licence and the regulator. Confirm current requirements with the regulator before any crew mobilises.
For Kansas City employers: outsourced Level III, consulting and succession
Many companies start this conversation because they need Level III authority now, and the candidate they want to develop is a year or more away from being ready. There are three common answers, and they can run together.
- Outsourced Level III of record. An external ASNT NDT Level III signs and maintains the written practice, approves procedures, and administers examinations while your own candidate prepares. See ASNT Level III consulting services and our comparison of outsourced versus in-house Level III.
- Succession planning. If your current Level III is retiring or leaving, the gap between their departure and a successor's certification is a real audit risk. Level III succession planning covers how to bridge it.
- Sponsored candidates. Employers often sponsor one or more internal candidates through preparation. We report progress to the sponsor, and the exam remains the candidate's own with ASNT. For multi-person programmes, see corporate NDT training.
For refinery-specific consulting in the region, see refining NDT consulting for Kansas City. To talk through the options, book a Level III consultation for your Kansas City team.
Practise the hands-on side with the Practical NDT simulator
The Level III exams are written, but a Level III who writes procedures needs a feel for how techniques behave on real geometry. The Practical NDT simulator lets candidates and the Level I and II technicians they will later examine rehearse 12 method families across twelve workplaces, including an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It is a practice tool only. It does not replace practical examinations on real specimens under an employer's written practice.
Your instructor
Level III preparation is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. Sessions are taught Level III to Level III candidate, with the emphasis on the judgement the role requires: method selection, procedure content and code interpretation, not memorised answers.
Frequently asked questions about ASNT Level III exam prep in Kansas City
How do I become an NDT Level III in Kansas City?
Meet one of ASNT's education-and-experience routes for the method you want, apply to ASNT, and pass the Basic exam plus at least one method exam. Your employer then certifies you as its Level III under its written practice. Atlantis helps with the preparation and the eligibility check; ASNT runs the exams.
Is there an ASNT Level III class I can attend in Kansas City?
Atlantis does not operate a classroom in Kansas City. Preparation runs self-paced online, which works across the whole metro on both the Missouri and Kansas sides, or onsite at your employer's facility for a group.
Can I take Level III exam preparation online?
Yes. The theory, problem-solving and timed practice all work well online, and that is how most individual candidates prepare. The ASNT examinations themselves are taken under ASNT's proctored testing arrangements, not online through a training provider.
Does Atlantis issue the ASNT Level III certificate?
No. ASNT administers the NDT Level III programme and issues the certificate. Atlantis prepares candidates and supports employers with written practices and Level III services.
How many questions are on the Level III Basic exam and what is the pass mark?
ASNT publishes the current question counts, time limits and passing criteria for the Basic and each method exam. We prepare against those published figures; check ASNT's site for the current numbers before you book, and see our Basic exam prep page for content.
How long should I study for the ASNT Level III?
It depends on your background and how many method exams you are sitting. We set the plan from a diagnostic test rather than a fixed calendar, and we recommend moving your exam date if the timed mocks say you are not ready.
Which method exam should I take first?
Usually the method where your documented experience is strongest, since that is where your eligibility is clearest. Many Kansas City candidates then add a second or third method because local employers value multi-method Level IIIs.
Do I need a degree to become a Level III?
No. ASNT has a route with no college requirement, but it asks for more Level II-comparable experience than the degree routes. See the requirements guide.
Does the Level III RT exam cover Missouri or Kansas licensing?
The RT method exam tests radiation safety principles, not state licence conditions. In practice, Missouri radioactive-materials licensing is handled by the NRC and Kansas licensing by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment; your employer's licence and the regulator set the job-site requirements.
What does Level III exam preparation cost in Kansas City?
It is quoted on request and depends on the number of methods, individual or group format, and online or onsite delivery. We reply within one business day. ASNT's own application and examination charges are set by ASNT and paid to ASNT.
Can my company use an outside Level III while I prepare?
Yes. Many employers use an outsourced Level III of record until an internal candidate is certified and appointed under the written practice. See Level III consulting.
How is the ASNT Level III renewed?
ASNT NDT Level III certificates run on a five-year cycle and are renewed either by documenting renewal points for continued Level III activity or by retaking the method exam. Your employer's written practice may add its own recertification requirements.
Next step: ask for a Level III eligibility check, request a quote for a Kansas City employer cohort, or browse the full NDT training catalogue and online NDT training options. Working toward Level II first? See ASNT NDT Level II exam prep.
Get certified, or certify your team
Individuals train and sit examinations under their employer's written practice. Employers need that written practice, and a Level III to run it. Atlantis does both.
