NDT training in St. Louis: how it works for St. Louis employers and technicians

Atlantis NDT delivers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT training for St. Louis and the Metro East at Level I, II and III in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET. St. Louis is a two-state inspection market. On the Missouri side sit military aircraft production, automotive assembly, breweries, chemical and pharmaceutical plants and a large base of fabrication and machine shops. Across the river in Illinois, the Metro East adds a major refinery, steelmaking, chemical plants, rail yards and barge terminals. Between them runs the inland waterway system, with its barges, fleeting areas, terminals and bridges. For technicians, that variety means real choice. For employers, it means two different state regulatory regimes for radiography, different customer requirements, and inspection crews whose training has to satisfy them all.

Atlantis does not have a physical training centre in St. Louis, Clayton, Chesterfield, Belleville or anywhere else. Formal classroom training is self-paced online; practical training and practical examinations are delivered onsite at the employer's own facility, using its equipment, reference standards and specimens. Under SNT-TC-1A, a training course does not certify anyone by itself. The employer certifies its own personnel against its written practice, using a Level III to administer examinations.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in St. Louis

Choosing a first method in St. Louis. For someone targeting the aerospace and defence supply chain around Lambert airport and in St. Charles County, PT and MT are typical entry methods, with ET and UT the methods that lead to more specialised roles. For someone targeting fabrication, mechanical contracting or the Metro East refinery and chemical plants, VT and MT are the usual first steps and UT the method that opens up Level II weld and thickness work. RT remains in demand among piping and pressure-vessel contractors, but comes with separate radiation-safety requirements. PAUT and TOFD make sense after conventional UT Level II, especially for technicians who want turnaround work.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in St. Louis, step by step

These are the standard SNT-TC-1A steps. Your employer's written practice sets the details and may require more than the recommended minimums. The recommended classroom and experience hours by method and level are in our training requirements matrix.

1. Confirm your governing written practice. A defence supplier in Hazelwood, a mechanical contractor in Fenton and a refinery contractor in Wood River may all be SNT-TC-1A employers with very different documents and customer overlays.
2. Complete formal classroom training. Take the method course for your target level and keep the course outline, hours, dates and instructor details.
3. Log on-the-job experience. Work under certified supervision and record dates, techniques, items examined and hours, signed off as you go.
4. General examination. A written test on method principles under the authority of a Level III.
5. Specific examination. A written test on your employer's equipment, procedures, codes and acceptance criteria.
6. Practical examination. A hands-on test on real specimens covering set-up, calibration, detection, evaluation and reporting.
7. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour-contrast differentiation, with near vision re-checked at least annually.
8. Employer certification. Written certification by the employer for the method and level, valid with that employer.
9. Maintain and recertify. Keep vision current, maintain continuity, and recertify at the written practice interval. A new employer certifies you under its own written practice and may credit documented prior training and experience.

Self-paced online or onsite NDT training for St. Louis crews

Self-paced online theory. Classroom content is self-paced online, with questions, worked examples and assessments. Crews spread between St. Charles, south county and the Illinois side can study without crossing the river at rush hour, and sessions can be arranged in blocks that suit shift patterns. Onsite practical at your facility. Practical training and examinations are run at the employer's site, in Missouri or Illinois, using your equipment and representative specimens: aerospace detail parts for a supplier, pipe and plate welds for a contractor, barge or railcar weldments for a repair yard.

Scheduling around St. Louis workloads. Refinery and chemical-plant turnarounds in the Metro East pull large numbers of inspection technicians in concentrated periods; power-plant outages at regional coal, gas and nuclear stations do the same. Aerospace suppliers work to production rates, and river work is seasonal, with high and low water affecting barge and terminal maintenance. Where NDT technicians work in St. Louis

Aerospace and defence. Boeing's St. Louis operations produce the F-15EX, the T-7A trainer and the MQ-25, with the F/A-18 and munitions lines in the region, and a large new facility for next-generation combat aircraft has been built in north St. Louis County. Around them is a supply chain of machine shops, finishers, fabricators and composite shops. Aerospace and defence customers usually impose their own process specifications, and many require NAS 410 or EN 4179 qualification and Nadcap-accredited processes. Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A-based and does not provide NAS 410 certification, so defence suppliers should use our method training and Level III support as part of their own qualification scheme and confirm what their prime requires.

Refining, chemicals and steel in the Metro East. The Wood River refinery complex at Roxana, chemical plants along the Illinois riverfront, steelmaking in Granite City and pipeline and fuel terminals around Hartford and East St. Louis generate heavy demand for UT thickness and weld examination, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT and ET of exchanger tubing. Process piping typically follows ASME B31.3, vessels ASME Section VIII and storage tanks API 650, with in-service inspection to API codes. Owner-side API 510, 570 or 653 inspectors are a separate certification that Atlantis does not offer.

Power generation. Ameren Missouri's Callaway Energy Center near Fulton is Missouri's nuclear plant, and coal and gas stations such as Labadie serve the region. Boiler and piping work follows ASME Section I and B31.1, and nuclear work adds its own quality-assurance and qualification rules. Outage seasons draw inspectors from the whole St. Louis labour pool.

River, barge and rail. The Port of St. Louis and the barge-building, fleeting and repair operations on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers use VT, MT and UT on hull structure, deck fittings and cargo systems. Railcar manufacturing and repair in the region, and major rail yards, use MT and UT on wheels, axles, couplers and car structure, often under Association of American Railroads requirements.

Manufacturing, breweries and pharma. Automotive assembly in Wentzville and its suppliers, one of the country's best-known breweries, and chemical and life-sciences plants use stainless process piping, pressure vessels and tanks, calling for PT, VT and UT. Structural fabricators weld to AWS D1.1, and Mississippi River bridges on the MoDOT and IDOT systems follow AWS D1.5 for bridge steel.

Radiography licensing: Missouri versus Illinois. This matters for St. Louis crews. Missouri is not an NRC Agreement State, so industrial radiography with radioactive sources in Missouri is licensed directly by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission under 10 CFR Part 34. Illinois is an Agreement State, and radioactive-material licensing there is handled by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. A radiography company working on both sides of the river needs authorisation from both regulators, which usually means a primary licence from one and reciprocity with the other. Radiographers must hold radiation-safety certification, commonly ASNT IRRSP or an equivalent recognised programme. Electronic X-ray equipment is regulated at state level rather than by the NRC. Our RT course teaches the NDT method and interpretation; it does not replace radiation-safety training or certification.

Level III services and written practices for St. Louis NDT companies

St. Louis has a deep base of mid-sized manufacturers and contractors whose inspection functions have grown over decades. Many operate with an older written practice that has not kept pace with the current edition of SNT-TC-1A, with a Level III who has retired, or with personnel files that would not survive a detailed customer audit. Others, particularly new defence suppliers and contractors taking on refinery work for the first time, need a programme built from scratch.

Many candidates understand the theory but have limited hands-on time before their practical examination. Do I need a license for radiography in Missouri?

Missouri is not an Agreement State, so radiography with radioactive sources is licensed by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Work on the Illinois side falls under the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. Radiographers need radiation-safety certification under 10 CFR Part 34 or the equivalent state rules. RT method certification under SNT-TC-1A is separate.
