ISO 9712 NDT Personnel Qualification

ISO 9712 is the international standard for qualification and certification of NDT personnel, defining a third-party central-certification model in which an accredited body conducts written and practical examinations independent of the employer.

ISO 9712 contrasts with employer-based certification under SNT-TC-1A. ISO 9712 certificates are valid for 5 years and require periodic recertification. Schemes operating under ISO 9712 include PCN (UK) and CSWIP (UK), COFREND (France), and many national schemes.

The defining feature is third-party certification: the certification body, not the employer, examines and certifies, so the certificate is portable. Sector and method scope are stated on the certificate, and working outside that scope is outside the certification.

The common misuse

Reading a Level 2 certificate as universal. It is granted per method and per sector, and a certificate in one sector does not authorise work in another.
