ASNT CP-189

ASNT CP-189 is the standard for qualification and certification of NDT personnel that mandates (rather than recommends) requirements — including a minimum 30-question general examination from an ASNT-furnished question pool — making it the most rigorous employer-based certification standard.

CP-189 is referenced by ASME Section V as an alternative to SNT-TC-1A. It is structurally similar but more prescriptive — required training hours, examination question pools from ASNT, and stricter audit provisions.

How it is applied

The practical difference is latitude: under CP-189 the employer certifies but cannot tailor hour and examination requirements downward, and a certified Level III must be the examiner. Contracts wanting supplier consistency specify it for exactly that reason.

The common misuse

Writing "SNT-TC-1A/CP-189" in a written practice as if interchangeable. A programme claiming CP-189 compliance inherits its fixed requirements — auditors check against the standard, not the guideline.
