ASME Section VIII
ASME Section VIII is the ASME BPVC chapter covering rules for construction of pressure vessels, with Division 1 (design by rule), Division 2 (design by analysis), and Division 3 (high-pressure vessels), each invoking ASME Section V NDT requirements.
Definition
Section VIII Division 1 is the most widely used pressure vessel construction code in the world. It specifies design, materials, fabrication, welding, NDT, and pressure testing requirements. NDT extent depends on joint type, material, and the chosen joint efficiency (1.0 requires full radiography).

The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code section governing pressure vessels: Division 1 by rules-based design, Division 2 by alternative rules with more analysis and closer inspection, Division 3 for high pressure.
How it is applied
It sets design, materials, fabrication, examination and certification requirements for new construction, and it is the acceptance authority the examination standards defer to. In-service inspection is API 510's territory, not Section VIII's.
