API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1 Fitness-for-Service

API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1 is the recommended practice for quantitative engineering assessment of in-service flaws and damage, providing Level 1, 2, and 3 assessment procedures for brittle fracture, general and local metal loss, pitting, blisters, crack-like flaws, creep, and fatigue.

Definition

API 579 lets inspectors decide whether equipment with measured damage can continue in service, must be derated, must be repaired, or must be retired. Level 1 is conservative and uses simple charts; Level 3 uses finite element analysis. FFS is invoked when measured damage exceeds API 510 / 570 / 653 limits.
