Fitness-for-Service (FFS)

Fitness-for-service is a quantitative engineering assessment of in-service equipment with measured damage to determine whether it can continue in service safely, must be repaired, derated, or retired, performed per API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1.

Definition

FFS bridges the gap between go/no-go workmanship criteria and rigorous fracture-mechanics analysis. Level 1 assessments are conservative screening; Level 2 uses more complete data and analysis; Level 3 uses finite-element analysis and is the most rigorous. FFS is commonly applied to wall loss, pitting, crack-like flaws, fire damage, brittle fracture risk, creep, and fatigue.

What it represents

Engineering assessment of whether equipment containing a flaw or degradation can continue operating safely — quantitatively, against the actual condition, rather than by comparison with new-construction acceptance criteria.

How it is derived

API 579/ASME FFS-1 structures it in assessment levels of increasing rigour. The inputs are inspection data: flaw dimensions, remaining thickness, material properties. The output is a run/repair/re-rate/retire decision with a technical basis that survives review.

How it is misread

Feeding an FFS assessment with unsized or poorly located indications. The assessment is only as good as the NDT that characterised the flaw, which is why sizing technique (TOFD, phased array) matters more here than anywhere.

Where Fitness-for-Service fits in an inspection programme

A term is only useful when it connects to a decision. Fitness-for-Service appears in written procedures, in technique sheets, and in the records an owner or accreditation body reviews afterwards — which means the way it is defined in your documentation has to match the way it is applied on site.
