Magnetic Particle Bench
A magnetic particle bench is a stationary horizontal wet-method MT unit with headstock and tailstock contacts plus a coil, used to inspect production components under controlled magnetization in a shop environment.
Definition
Bench units provide repeatable head-shot (current through the part) and coil-shot (longitudinal magnetization) inspection on rotating shafts, billets, crankshafts, and similar production parts. They use wet fluorescent particles in a flood bath inspected under UV-A light.
What it is
A stationary magnetizing unit for MT: headstock and tailstock pass current through the part (circular field) while a coil supplies the longitudinal field — letting a part be examined in two perpendicular field directions without repositioning by hand.
Correct use
Bench units dominate high-volume component work — crankshafts, spindles, couplings — where consistent contact, repeatable amperage and wet fluorescent particles under a hood beat anything achievable with a yoke. Amperage is set from part diameter per the governing rule-of-thumb ranges, then verified with field indicators, not assumed.

ASTM E1444 and ASME Section V Article 7 set current levels, verification and demagnetisation expectations.
The usual mistake
Arc burns at the headstock contacts on poorly cleaned or lightly clamped parts. An arc strike is a metallurgical defect you just added to a part you were inspecting — contact pads and clamping pressure are not optional details.
