Transducer (Ultrasonic)
An ultrasonic transducer is a device — typically containing a piezoelectric element — that converts electrical pulses to mechanical vibrations and vice versa, used to launch and receive ultrasonic waves in the test piece.
Definition
An ultrasonic transducer (probe) contains one or more piezoelectric elements (PZT, composite, or single-crystal) that vibrate when energized and convert returning mechanical waves back into electrical signals. The element is mounted on a backing material that damps unwanted ringing.
Technical Context
Probes are characterized by frequency (typically 1–10 MHz), element size, near-field length, and beam profile. Variants include normal-beam (0°), angle-beam, dual-element, immersion, and phased-array probes.
What it is
The probe element converting electrical pulses to ultrasound and back — a piezoelectric element (or array of them) whose frequency, size and damping define what the examination can resolve.
Correct use
Frequency trades penetration against resolution; element size trades beam spread against near-field length; damping trades sensitivity against pulse length. Probe selection IS technique design — and probes age: elements crack, wear plates thin, cables fail intermittently, which is why probe checks belong in the daily verification, not the annual calibration.
Governing standards
EN 12668-2 / ISO 22232-2 govern probe characterisation; procedure qualification fixes the probe parameters the demonstration used.
The usual mistake
Swapping a "same spec" probe mid-job without re-verification. Two probes of identical nominal frequency and size can differ meaningfully in beam profile — the calibration and sensitivity that qualified the technique belong to the probe that did the demonstration.

Where this comes up in practice
