Inspection

NDT inspection services

Every NDT method sees some flaws well and others not at all. A thickness gauge will not find a crack; magnetic particle testing will not find wall loss on the far side. We select methods from the damage mechanisms the equipment is susceptible to, then plan coverage, technique and acceptance criteria before anyone mobilises.

Advanced or conventional?

Conventional methods (VT, PT, MT, manual UT and film radiography) are fast to mobilise, well understood by every code and the right answer for most construction and routine in-service work.

Advanced methods earn their place when the question is harder: sizing a flaw’s height for a fitness-for-service assessment, mapping wall loss over an area rather than a point, screening insulated piping without stripping it, or replacing radiography so other trades can keep working. They usually take more set-up and need a qualified procedure, so we recommend them where they change the decision, not by default.

Choosing methods by damage mechanism

Damage mechanism (API 571)Typical methods
General and localised corrosion, erosionUT thickness, corrosion mapping, profile RT, PEC screening
Corrosion under insulation (CUI)PEC, guided wave, profile DR, targeted insulation removal with UT
Fatigue and stress corrosion crackingMT/WFMT, PT, ECA/ACFM, PAUT, TOFD
Weld fabrication flawsVT, RT/DR, PAUT, TOFD, AUT
Tube wall loss and pittingECT, RFT, NFT, IRIS
Tank floor soil-side corrosionMFL floor scanning with UT prove-up
Wrong material, hardness and microstructurePMI, portable hardness, ferrite testing
Coating and lining defectsHoliday testing, visual, DFT measurement

Procedures, personnel and reporting

Inspection work is planned and supervised by ASNT Level III personnel. Our founder holds ASNT NDT Level III in UT, RT, MT, PT and VT. Technicians are qualified and certified to the employer’s written practice under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, or to ISO 9712 or the client’s own scheme where the contract requires it, and each technician’s certification is submitted for the client’s review before work starts. Reports list the procedure and revision, the equipment and calibration, the coverage achieved with any limitations, and each indication against the stated acceptance criteria.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between advanced and conventional NDT?

Conventional NDT covers visual, penetrant, magnetic particle, manual ultrasonic and film radiographic testing. Advanced NDT uses encoded, imaging or electromagnetic techniques such as PAUT, TOFD, corrosion mapping, eddy current and digital radiography to size flaws, cover areas or work through insulation and coatings.

How are NDT methods selected for a piece of equipment?

From the damage mechanisms the equipment is susceptible to under API 571, the governing code, the access available and the decision the result must support, such as acceptance, remaining life or fitness-for-service.
