Inspection

Turnaround and shutdown inspection

A turnaround is the most expensive time to discover that the inspection scope was wrong. Inspection decisions drive the critical path: a finding late in the window becomes a repair, a material order and an extension. We plan inspection with the turnaround team months ahead, then run it on site with the people, equipment and reporting to keep pace with the schedule.

Before the outage

  • Inspection scope built from the RBI plan, inspection history and open recommendations, not from last turnaround’s list.
  • Inspection work packs per item: methods, coverage, access, cleaning, and the acceptance criteria to apply.
  • Contingency planning for likely findings: repair procedures, materials and FFS options agreed in advance.
  • Personnel and equipment plan, including advanced NDT that needs procedure qualification before the outage.

During the outage

  • Internal and external visual inspection of vessels, columns, reactors and drums.
  • Heat-exchanger tube inspection by ECT, RFT, NFT and IRIS, with bundle maps and plugging recommendations.
  • Fired-heater tube inspection to API 573: thickness, diameter growth and creep-related checks.
  • Weld and crack inspection by PAUT, TOFD, MT and PT on items identified in the plan.
  • Repair and alteration inspection to ASME PCC-2, NBIC and the applicable API inspection code.
  • Daily progress and findings reports so emergent work is raised while there is still time to act.

After start-up

A post-turnaround inspection report for each item, updated thickness and condition data for the inspection database and RBI model, closed and open recommendations, and the next inspection dates calculated from the new data.

Frequently asked questions

How early should turnaround inspection planning start?

As early as the turnaround scope is frozen, typically many months ahead, so that advanced NDT procedures can be qualified, access and cleaning planned, and contingency repairs prepared before the outage starts.
