ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in Detroit

Ultrasonic Testing. Detroit UT is unusually diverse. On one side sits resistance spot-weld inspection, where technicians evaluate nugget size and fusion in thin sheet using specialised probes and waveform interpretation; on the other, refinery and power-plant thickness surveys and angle-beam weld inspection to ASME. Our UT course covers the fundamentals common to both, then practical exercises weighted toward your application. Level II students learn to write techniques, evaluate indications and report to the governing specification.

Phased Array and TOFD. For UT Level II technicians. PAUT covers focal laws, sectorial and linear scans, encoding and scan plans, with examples ranging from joining inspection on vehicle structures to thick welds in heavy industry. TOFD covers diffraction sizing and its limits.

Radiographic Testing. Casting radiography is a Detroit speciality. The RT course covers exposure, geometry, image quality, film and digital radiography, and interpretation of porosity, shrinkage, inclusions and cracks in castings as well as welds. Computed tomography is introduced as context. Radiation licensing is covered in outline; it remains the employer's responsibility.

Magnetic Particle. Wet horizontal bench units testing forged and machined parts are a core Detroit application. The MT course covers head-shot and coil-shot technique, multidirectional magnetisation, field strength verification, fluorescent inspection, demagnetisation and the difference between relevant indications and non-relevant ones caused by geometry.

Liquid Penetrant. PT covers fluorescent and visible systems, sensitivity levels, removal methods, and process control checks such as system performance panels, which matter in production lines inspecting aluminium castings.

Visual Testing. VT covers direct and remote technique, weld and dimensional inspection, and documentation for structural and plant work.

Eddy Current Testing. ET is a production tool in the Detroit supply chain. The course covers impedance-plane analysis, frequency and probe selection, encircling and surface probes, and calibration standards, with applications in automated crack detection, heat-treat and material sorting, and exchanger tubing at power and process plants.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Detroit, step by step

1. Employer written practice, defining training, experience, exams, vision and recertification for each method and level.

Where NDT technicians work in Detroit

Automotive and mobility suppliers. Beyond the automakers, hundreds of Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers produce castings, forgings, stampings, welded assemblies and electrified powertrain components. Customer-specific requirements and quality frameworks such as IATF 16949 shape how NDT is controlled; SNT-TC-1A is widely used as the personnel qualification basis.

Refining. A Marathon Petroleum refinery operates in southwest Detroit and is a major source of turnaround and mechanical-integrity inspection work.

Steel. Integrated steel operations in Dearborn and the downriver communities of River Rouge and Ecorse need inspection of cranes, rolls, structural steel and process equipment.

Bridges and border infrastructure. The Ambassador Bridge, the Gordie Howe International Bridge project and MDOT's bridge inventory all involve steel and weld inspection to AWS bridge requirements.

Defence and aerospace. Ground-vehicle defence programmes in Macomb County, Selfridge Air National Guard Base and aerospace suppliers in the region often qualify NDT personnel under NAS 410 or customer requirements. Atlantis does not offer NAS 410 certification.

Pipelines and utilities. Gas utilities and pipeline operators in southeast Michigan require weld inspection under API 1104 and PHMSA rules; the Michigan Public Service Commission oversees intrastate gas pipeline safety.

Industrial radiography in Michigan. Michigan is not an NRC Agreement State. The NRC, through its Region III office, licenses radioactive-material use in Michigan, including isotope radiography, and 10 CFR Part 34 requires radiographers to hold NRC-recognised radiographer certification. X-ray equipment is registered separately with the state Radiation Safety Section, now part of MIOSHA's Technical Services Division, which also reviews shielding plans for industrial X-ray installations. Your SNT-TC-1A RT certificate is separate from those requirements.

Across the river. Windsor, Ontario, is minutes away, and some Detroit companies work on both sides. In Canada, the national NDT certification scheme is CGSB under CAN/CGSB-48.9712 (ISO 9712). Practise before the practical exam
