NDT training in Cleveland: how it works for Cleveland employers and technicians

Short answer: NDT training in Cleveland follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Your employer's written practice governs certification: you complete classroom training for the method and level, build documented on-the-job experience, pass general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and pass an annual vision test. Atlantis NDT delivers Level I, II and III training self-paced online or onsite at your Northeast Ohio facility, with no travel to a training centre.

Northeast Ohio is one of the places where American welding and metallurgy grew up, and it still shows. Within an hour of downtown you find an integrated steel mill on the Cuyahoga, some of the largest aerospace forging operations in the country, a world-leading welding equipment maker, a NASA research centre, two nuclear plants on the Lake Erie shore, a Great Lakes shipping fleet that does its heavy maintenance in winter, and hundreds of fabrication and machine shops. NDT here is less about refinery turnarounds and more about metal quality, weld quality and fatigue.

This section goes beyond the overview above: which methods Cleveland employers use and why, the complete SNT-TC-1A sequence, training scheduled around winter layup and outages, radiography requirements in Ohio, and Level III support for the region's many small NDT users. For the national overview see our NDT training programmes.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in Cleveland

Courses follow the SNT-TC-1A recommended practice and the body of knowledge used by Level III examiners. Individuals join the self-paced online course; employers can book closed groups at their own facility. Senior technicians can add ASNT Level III exam preparation.

Eddy Current Testing (ET)I, II, IIIAerospace component inspection, bar and tube inspection, heat-exchanger tubing at plantsEmployer requirements only for Level I; Level II builds on Level I

Practical guidance for Cleveland: steel, forging and foundry work rewards UT and MT above all, with RT for castings. Fabricators and bridge contractors want MT, UT and VT with AWS D1.1 or D1.5 knowledge. Aerospace forging and component suppliers use UT, PT, ET and MT, generally with NAS 410 personnel qualification on top of any SNT-TC-1A training. Unsure which to prioritise? SNT-TC-1A certification path in Cleveland, step by step

SNT-TC-1A is an ASNT recommended practice, not a licence issued by the State of Ohio. There is no state NDT card. The employer certifies you, following its written practice, and auditors check that written practice first.

  1. Employer written practice. Your employer's written practice defines levels, training, experience, examinations, vision requirements and recertification for each method.
  2. Formal classroom training. Documented training for the method and level; the minimum hours come from the written practice, normally based on SNT-TC-1A. See the training requirements matrix for reference figures.
  3. On-the-job experience. Supervised, documented experience in the method, signed by your supervisor or Level III.
  4. General examination. A written test on the method's theory and principles.
  5. Specific examination. A written test on your employer's procedures, equipment and specifications, such as ASME Section V and VIII, AWS D1.1 or D1.5, ASTM product standards for forgings and castings, or customer aerospace specifications.
  6. Practical examination. Hands-on inspection of real specimens with known discontinuities, graded under a Level III.
  7. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast, repeated annually.
  8. Certification. Issued by the employer on the Level III's recommendation, with records kept for audit.
  9. Recertification. At the interval in the written practice, and on joining a new employer.

Keep personal copies of your training certificates, exam results and experience logs. Cleveland technicians often move between mills, forgers, fabricators and inspection contractors, and a new employer's Level III can credit well-documented history quickly. More in our SNT-TC-1A certification guide.

Self-paced online or onsite NDT training for Cleveland crews

Atlantis NDT does not operate a physical training centre in Cleveland or elsewhere in Ohio. Training reaches Northeast Ohio in two ways.

Self-paced online. Theory with ASNT NDT Level III support for every method and level, studied from home or work. It suits shift workers at mills and forges and employers who cannot release a crew. See online NDT training.

Onsite at your facility. Closed-group training at your mill, forge, shop or yard under ASNT Level III oversight, using your equipment, procedures and reference standards. For employers with several trainees this is usually the most efficient option; see corporate NDT training.

Scheduling around Great Lakes and plant calendars. The Great Lakes shipping season closes over winter, and the fleet lays up for maintenance and repair, which is peak time for hull, structural and machinery inspection at Great Lakes ports and shipyards. Nuclear refuelling outages, steel-mill maintenance outages and summer bridge-construction seasons each pull inspectors away at different times. Tell us your blackout dates and we will build a cohort around them; ask about onsite training for your Cleveland crew. We reply within one business day.

Where NDT technicians work in Cleveland

  • Steel. Cleveland-Cliffs' Cleveland Works on the Cuyahoga River is an integrated steel mill, and specialty steel and bearing makers operate in the Canton area to the south. Product inspection uses UT and ET; plant maintenance uses UT, MT and VT on cranes, rolls, structures and pressure equipment.
  • Aerospace forgings and components. Howmet Aerospace's Cleveland Works produces large closed-die aerospace forgings, and the region has many aerospace component and fastener makers. UT of forgings, PT and MT of finished parts and ET are central, usually under NAS 410 personnel qualification and Nadcap-accredited processes.
  • Welding and fabrication. Lincoln Electric is headquartered in Euclid, and the region is dense with fabrication shops building structural steel, pressure vessels, heavy equipment and fluid-power components. MT, UT, VT and RT are all used, most often to AWS D1.1 or ASME Section VIII.
  • Nuclear and power. The Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Lake County and Davis-Besse near Oak Harbor sit on the Lake Erie shore. In-service inspection follows ASME Section XI and the plant's own qualification programme; SNT-TC-1A is the foundation. Fossil and gas plants use ASME Section I and B31.1.
  • Research and test facilities. NASA Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in Cleveland, and its Neil Armstrong Test Facility near Sandusky, use NDT on test hardware, pressure systems and structures.
  • Great Lakes shipping and ports. The Port of Cleveland, ore and bulk docks, and lake freighters that winter in Great Lakes ports require UT thickness gauging, weld inspection and structural surveys, often in connection with classification and Coast Guard inspections.
  • Bridges and infrastructure. ODOT, the Ohio Turnpike and Cuyahoga County maintain large inventories of steel bridges, including the major crossings of the Cuyahoga valley. Fatigue-crack inspection uses UT, MT and VT; new bridge steel follows AWS D1.5.
  • Energy. Marathon's Canton refinery and the Utica shale gathering and midstream networks in eastern Ohio generate API-standard in-service inspection and pipeline welding inspection to API 1104.

Radiography licensing in Ohio. Ohio is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography with radioactive sources is licensed and inspected by the Ohio Department of Health's radiation protection programme, under rules that parallel federal 10 CFR Part 34: radiation safety training, a recognised radiographer certification, and supervised operations under the licensee's radiation safety programme. X-ray equipment is registered separately. Cleveland crews working across the state line in Pennsylvania, also an Agreement State, need to satisfy that state's programme too. SNT-TC-1A RT training covers technique and interpretation; radiation safety compliance is a separate obligation.

What local employers ask for. Forgers and mills want UT and MT at Level II with product-standard knowledge. Fabricators want MT, UT and VT at Level II and familiarity with AWS D1.1 or ASME Section VIII. Aerospace employers want PT, ET and UT with an understanding of aerospace specifications. Some fabricators also expect a welding inspection credential such as AWS CWI, which is a separate scheme. For earnings context see our NDT salary guide.

Level III services and written practices for Cleveland NDT companies

Northeast Ohio's manufacturing base includes many companies for which NDT is a quality step rather than the core business: foundries, forgers, fastener makers, fabricators and fluid-power component makers. Their customers expect a written practice, qualified procedures and evidence of Level III oversight, and Code shops must show it at audit time.

  • Written practice development. A written practice drafted around your methods, levels, products and customer specifications, with training, experience, examination and vision record forms. See written practice development.
  • Outside Level III services. Examination preparation and grading, procedure approval, and certification sign-off under your written practice.
  • Procedure and technique review. Procedures aligned to ASME Section V, AWS D1.1 and D1.5, ASTM product standards and your customers' requirements.
  • Audit preparation. Record and procedure review ahead of customer, Code or accreditation audits.

Where a customer requires NAS 410, we will tell you plainly where SNT-TC-1A-based support fits and where the aerospace requirements go further. Book a Level III consultation for a documentation review, and see our SNT-TC-1A guidance.

Practise before the practical exam

The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees practise 12 method families in twelve workplaces, including an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. Cleveland trainees from fabrication and steel backgrounds will find the welding workshop and NDT lab the most relevant, while those joining aerospace suppliers can use the aircraft hangar.

The simulator is practice only. It does not replace the practical examination on real specimens graded under a Level III, and it does not count toward documented experience unless your employer's written practice explicitly allows it. Its value is repetition before the real exam.

Your instructor

Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He is responsible for course content and examinations, oversees onsite programmes and advises employers on written practices and Level III services.

Frequently asked questions about NDT training in Cleveland

How do I get NDT certified in Cleveland?

Under SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you after formal training, documented experience, general, specific and practical examinations under a Level III, and a vision test. If you are new, start with Level I in MT, PT or UT and approach Northeast Ohio fabricators, forgers, mills or inspection contractors that will certify you under their written practice.

Can I take NDT training online in Ohio?

Yes, theory for every method and level is available as self-paced online instruction. Hands-on skill and the practical examination require real equipment and specimens, arranged onsite with your employer. See online NDT training.

How long does UT Level 2 training take?

It depends on your employer's written practice and whether you already hold UT Level I. SNT-TC-1A recommends minimum training and experience; see the training requirements matrix. Experience usually takes longer than the classroom portion.

Do I need a license for radiography in Ohio?

The employer needs a radioactive materials licence from the Ohio Department of Health for source radiography, and individual radiographers must meet the state's training and certification requirements. SNT-TC-1A RT certification is separate and covers technique and interpretation. Confirm current rules with the state programme.

What does NDT training cost in Cleveland?

We do not publish prices. The quote depends on method, level, group size, and whether training is online or onsite at your facility. We reply within one business day; request your Cleveland NDT training quote.

Is ASNT certification recognised by Cleveland employers?

Yes. SNT-TC-1A is the standard basis for NDT personnel in steel, forging, fabrication, bridges and plant maintenance across Northeast Ohio. Aerospace employers usually apply NAS 410 and nuclear plants their own programmes, with SNT-TC-1A training as a common foundation.

Which NDT method should I learn first for Cleveland jobs?

MT and UT open the most doors in steel, forging and fabrication. PT and ET suit aerospace component work. VT with AWS D1.1 knowledge is valuable for any fabrication role. Many technicians start with MT and PT, then add UT.

Can you train our team during the winter layup season?

We schedule around your calendar. Shipyard and port employers often prefer training before or after the busiest layup weeks; mills and plants around their outages. Onsite programmes run at your facility under ASNT Level III oversight.

Does Atlantis offer CWI, NAS 410 or API courses in Cleveland?

No. Atlantis training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A based only. Some Cleveland employers also ask for AWS CWI, NAS 410 qualification or API inspector certificates; those are separate schemes run by other bodies and employers.

How do I prepare for ASNT Level III from Cleveland?

Level III requires substantial experience plus the ASNT Basic and method examinations or an equivalent employer examination. Our ASNT Level III exam preparation is delivered self-paced online, and our UT Level 2 practice questions help candidates at every level.

Does my certification transfer to a new Cleveland employer?

Not automatically. SNT-TC-1A certification belongs to the employer. Keep your records so the new employer's Level III can credit your training and experience and re-examine you.

Do forgings and castings need special NDT training?

The methods are the same, but the specific examination should cover the product standards and customer specifications you inspect to, for example ASTM standards for UT of forgings or MT and RT of castings. Onsite training at your facility lets us build the specific and practical content around your own products.

Why Cleveland needs certified NDT personnel

Cleveland sits on steel production, heavy manufacturing, chemical processing and aerospace component work across northern Ohio. That industrial base is what creates sustained demand for qualified inspection personnel here: the assets in question — mill equipment, pressure vessels, structural and fabricated steel, machined and cast components — are examined on intervals set by code rather than by preference, and the examinations have to be performed and interpreted by people whose qualification can be evidenced.

In practice that means the methods pulled hardest in this market are ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle, radiography and penetrant on machined parts. A qualification programme built for Cleveland should follow that demand rather than cover every method thinly.

Which level you need for Cleveland work

Level I performs specific calibrations and examinations and records results under direction. It is where most people entering Cleveland inspection work start, and for mill equipment it is usually reached in a single method first rather than several at once.

Level II sets up and calibrates equipment, interprets and evaluates results against the applicable code, and writes the report. This is the level most contracts in Ohio actually specify, because it is the level that can make an accept-or-reject call without supervision.

Level III establishes techniques and procedures, approves them, interprets codes and specifications, and takes responsibility for the qualification and examination of Level I and II personnel. It is also the level that signs the Written Practice an auditor will ask for. For operators running ultrasonic testing across multiple sites, Level III capability is the difference between owning your inspection programme and renting it.

How training reaches Cleveland

Atlantis does not operate a classroom in Cleveland, and it is worth being straightforward about that rather than implying otherwise. Training is delivered on-site at your own facility anywhere in Ohio and the surrounding region — which for a corporate buyer is usually the better arrangement anyway, since the practical specimens can reflect the mill equipment your people will actually be examining, and nobody loses days to travel.

Where you have only one or two candidates, they can enrol online at any time of year: theory is primarily self-paced, practice runs in the Practical NDT simulator, and the supervised practical takes place at the employer's own facility. Which route is right depends on headcount and on how quickly you need people qualified; tell us both and we will say plainly which we would recommend.

Certification route: ASNT, ISO 9712, and which your employer needs

Two models operate in the United States and they are not interchangeable. Under SNT-TC-1A, certification is granted by the employer against the employer's own Written Practice — flexible, and the reason auditors ask to see that document rather than a certificate. ISO 9712 and schemes such as PCN and CSWIP certify through an independent body, so the certificate is portable between employers. ANSI/ASNT CP-189 sits between them as a standard rather than a recommended practice.

Which you need is a contractual question, not a technical one. Plenty of Ohio contracts name one specifically, and candidates who choose the wrong route lose months. If you are unsure which your client base expects, that is worth a five-minute conversation before you enrol anyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is there NDT training near me in Cleveland?

Atlantis delivers training on-site at facilities across Ohio rather than from a fixed classroom in Cleveland. For a team, that is normally faster and cheaper than sending people away; for an individual, online enrolment, which is open all year, is usually the better route. Tell us which you are and we will point you at the honest option, including if that is someone else.

How long does it take to qualify at Level II?

It depends on the method and on how much documented experience you already hold, because the requirement is training hours and experience hours, not training alone. Someone already working under supervision in the method progresses considerably faster than someone starting cold. We will map your existing hours against the requirement before you commit to anything.

Can our own staff be certified without an outside body?

Under SNT-TC-1A, yes — that is precisely the model, and it requires a compliant Written Practice and a qualified Level III to administer it. Many operators use an outsourced Level III for exactly this. If you do not currently have one, that is the gap to close first, because without it the certifications you issue will not survive an audit.

Do you train all methods?

UT, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus advanced techniques including phased array and TOFD. API 510, 570 and 653 inspector certifications are separate and are sat through API. For a Cleveland programme we would normally suggest starting with ultrasonic testing and adding from there as the work demands.

Looking for NDT training near you?

Searches like "NDT training near me" and "NDT certification near me" usually mean one of two things: a company that needs a crew qualified without losing them to travel, or an individual looking for the closest route to a certificate. Both are answerable from Cleveland.

For companies, proximity is solved by delivery rather than address — programmes run on-site at your facility, so the training comes to the crew and the practical work uses specimens matching what your people actually examine. For individuals, online enrolment is open all year: theory is primarily self-paced, practice runs in the Practical NDT simulator, and the supervised practical takes place at the employer's facility, so no local classroom is needed.
