SNT-TC-1A certification path in Chicago, step by step

SNT-TC-1A is a recommended practice published by ASNT. It is not a government licence and there is no central SNT-TC-1A card. The employer certifies, and the written practice sets the rules. The steps below apply whether you work for a refinery contractor in Joliet or a two-person fabrication shop in Elk Grove Village.

1. Employer written practice. Your employer adopts a written practice specifying levels, training, experience, examinations, vision testing and recertification for each method it certifies.
2. Formal classroom training. You complete documented training for the method and level. Hours are set in the written practice, usually based on SNT-TC-1A recommendations; the training requirements matrix lists the reference figures by method and level.
3. On-the-job experience. You accumulate documented, supervised experience in the method, signed off by your supervisor or Level III.
4. General examination. A written theory examination on the method.
5. Specific examination. A written test on your employer's equipment, procedures and the codes you apply, such as ASME Section V techniques with ASME Section VIII or B31.3 acceptance criteria, API 1104 for pipelines, or AWS D1.1 for structural work.
6. Practical examination. Hands-on testing of real specimens with known flaws, administered and graded under a Level III.
7. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast, repeated annually.
8. Certification. The employer issues certification based on the Level III's evaluation and keeps the records on file for audits.
9. Recertification. At the interval defined in the written practice, and whenever you move to a new employer.

Because certification stays with the employer, Chicago technicians who move between refinery contractors, mill contractors and fabricators should keep their own copies of training certificates, exam results and experience logs. Online, live-virtual or onsite NDT training for Chicago crews

Scheduling around turnarounds and outages. Chicagoland refineries run planned turnarounds that pull every available technician into the plant for weeks, commonly in spring and autumn. Nuclear plants schedule refuelling outages that do the same for their contractors. Steel mills plan maintenance outages on blast furnaces and rolling lines. Outdoor bridge and pipeline work slows in the Chicago winter. Where NDT technicians work in Chicago

• Refining. ExxonMobil's Joliet refinery and CITGO's Lemont refinery lie southwest of the city, and BP's Whiting refinery in northwest Indiana is the largest in the Midwest. In-service inspection of vessels, piping and tanks follows API standards; new construction and repairs follow ASME Section VIII and B31.3. Contractors look for UT, RT and increasingly PAUT at Level II.
• Nuclear power. Illinois has more operating nuclear reactors than any other state, at Braidwood, Byron, Dresden, LaSalle, Quad Cities and Clinton. In-service inspection follows ASME Section XI, and UT examinations on many components also require performance demonstration qualification under the plant's programme. SNT-TC-1A training is the foundation; plant-specific qualification comes on top.
• Steel. Integrated mills at Gary, Burns Harbor and Indiana Harbor on the Indiana shore, plus processors and service centres throughout the south suburbs, need UT for plate and billet, MT for crane and rolling-mill components, and ongoing maintenance inspection.
• Heavy equipment and manufacturing. Caterpillar plants in the Joliet, Aurora and Peoria areas, Deere in the Quad Cities, and hundreds of fabrication shops across Cook, DuPage and Will counties build weldments and castings inspected with MT, UT and VT, usually to AWS D1.1 or customer specifications.
• Aerospace and aviation. Rockford is home to major aerospace component makers, and airline maintenance operations at O'Hare and Midway require PT, ET, UT and VT, with personnel usually qualified to NAS 410 or the airline's own programme.
• Pipelines and gas distribution. Chicago is a major crossroads for crude and natural gas pipelines, and the local gas utilities run long-term main replacement programmes. Welding and inspection follow API 1104 and federal pipeline safety rules, with RT and increasingly automated UT on girth welds.
• Bridges and infrastructure. The Chicago Department of Transportation maintains dozens of movable bascule bridges over the Chicago River, and IDOT and the Illinois Tollway own a large inventory of steel highway bridges. Fatigue-sensitive details are inspected with UT, MT and VT; bridge fabrication follows AWS D1.5.

Radiography licensing in Illinois. Illinois is an NRC Agreement State. The radiation programme at the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) licenses companies that perform industrial radiography, and Illinois also certifies individual industrial radiographers. Anyone performing or personally supervising industrial radiography in Illinois needs that state certification, which involves a radiation safety examination and an application endorsed by the licensee's radiation safety officer. Working without it is an offence under the Illinois Radiation Protection Act. Note the neighbouring-state trap for Chicagoland crews: northwest Indiana is not an Agreement State, so radiography at Whiting or the Indiana steel mills falls under NRC rules instead. SNT-TC-1A RT training covers technique and film or digital interpretation, not these radiation safety requirements.

Boilers and pressure vessels. Illinois boiler and pressure vessel safety is administered by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, and ASME Code work in the state is examined by personnel certified under a documented written practice. Local employers most often ask for Level II in two or more methods, documented training and experience, and familiarity with the codes named in their contracts. Level III services and written practices for Chicago NDT companies

Chicagoland has a large base of small and mid-sized fabricators and machine shops that perform NDT as part of manufacturing rather than as their core business. Many run on an outdated written practice, an informal arrangement with a retired Level III, or nothing at all. The problem tends to surface when a new customer, an ASME Code audit, or an aerospace supplier questionnaire asks for evidence.

Practise before the practical exam

The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees practise 12 NDT methods in five environments: an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. For Chicago trainees, the oil and gas site and storage tank scenes resemble refinery and terminal work, the welding workshop mirrors fabrication and heavy-equipment shops, and the aircraft hangar suits technicians heading for aviation maintenance.

It is practice, not certification. The simulator does not replace the practical examination on real specimens graded under a Level III, and it does not count as on-the-job experience unless your employer's written practice explicitly says so. Its value is repetition: set-up, scanning coverage, calibration habits and indication recognition before you face the real exam.

How do I get NDT certified in Chicago?

Under SNT-TC-1A your employer certifies you after you complete formal training, documented experience, general, specific and practical examinations under a Level III, and a vision test. Do I need a license for radiography in Illinois?

Yes. The company needs an IEMA-OHS radioactive materials licence for source radiography, and individuals performing or supervising industrial radiography must hold Illinois radiographer certification. If your work takes you into northwest Indiana, NRC rules apply there instead. SNT-TC-1A RT certification is a separate, employer-issued qualification in technique and interpretation.
