NDT Training and Certification in Georgia

Short answer: Georgia technicians and employers can get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III NDT training from Atlantis NDT live online, in live-virtual cohorts, or onsite at their own hangar, plant, shipyard or construction site, led and overseen by an ASNT NDT Level III. Your employer certifies you under its written practice. Atlantis has no training centre in Georgia; delivery is online or at your facility.

Georgia's NDT market looks very different from the Gulf Coast or the Great Lakes. Its heaviest demand comes from aerospace (business jets in Savannah, military airlifters in Marietta, depot maintenance at Robins Air Force Base, airline heavy maintenance in Atlanta and engine work in Columbus), from nuclear power (Plant Vogtle, the only US site with four operating units, and Plant Hatch), from ports and LNG on the coast, from a fast-growing automotive and battery manufacturing belt, and from pulp and paper mills across the south of the state. Pipelines that carry fuel from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast also pass through metro Atlanta. This page explains how Atlantis NDT training works for Georgia, what Georgia employers need, how Georgia regulates radiography, and how to request a Georgia training quote.

Where NDT technicians work in Georgia

Direct answer: Georgia NDT work clusters in metro Atlanta (airline MRO, aerospace manufacturing, construction, pipelines), coastal Georgia around Savannah and Brunswick (business-jet manufacturing, ports, LNG, shipbuilding, a new automotive plant), Middle Georgia (Robins AFB depot maintenance, power), the Augusta and Waynesboro area (nuclear), West Georgia and Columbus (engines, automotive) and South Georgia (paper mills, Plant Hatch, military bases).

Metro Atlanta and Marietta

Delta TechOps at Hartsfield-Jackson is one of the largest airline maintenance, repair and overhaul operations in North America, and airline MRO is NDT-heavy: eddy current on fastener holes and skins, ultrasonic inspection of composites and bonded structures, penetrant and magnetic particle on landing-gear and engine parts, and visual inspection everywhere. Lockheed Martin's Marietta site builds the C-130J and supports other aircraft programmes, adding aerospace manufacturing NDT under prime-contractor specifications. Beyond aerospace, metro Atlanta has a huge construction market (data centres, stadiums, high-rise and hospital work) where AWS D1.1 structural steel inspection, UT of welds and VT are in demand, plus GDOT bridge work and the Colonial and Plantation pipelines that run through the metro area to the Northeast. See NDT training in Atlanta.

Coastal Georgia: Savannah, Ellabell and Brunswick

Gulfstream Aerospace's headquarters and main manufacturing and service centre in Savannah make the city a major aerospace NDT employer base, with composites UT, eddy current, penetrant and radiography on airframes and components. The Port of Savannah is one of the busiest container ports in the US, with cranes, terminals and heavy structures, and Kinder Morgan's Elba Island LNG terminal adds cryogenic tank and piping work. Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America at Ellabell in Bryan County and its suppliers are building out a large automotive and battery cluster west of Savannah. Brunswick has the Port of Brunswick, roll-on/roll-off vehicle terminals and pulp and paper, and Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay near St. Marys adds naval maintenance work under NAVSEA requirements. See NDT training in Savannah and aerospace NDT training in Savannah.

Middle Georgia: Warner Robins and Macon

Robins Air Force Base hosts the Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex, which performs depot maintenance on large military aircraft such as the C-130, C-5, C-17 and F-15. Depot maintenance relies heavily on eddy current, ultrasonic, penetrant, magnetic particle and radiographic inspection, under military technical orders and contractor procedures. Contractors and suppliers around Warner Robins and Macon employ NDT technicians for that work. Georgia Power's Plant Scherer near Juliette adds power-plant outage work.

Augusta and Waynesboro

Plant Vogtle in Burke County, near Waynesboro, has four nuclear units including the two newest reactors in the US. Nuclear in-service inspection under ASME Section XI, ET of steam-generator tubing, UT of piping welds and VT of supports and components is outage-driven work that pulls in many contract technicians. Augusta is also across the river from the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, and the area has chemical, paper and manufacturing plants.

Columbus and West Georgia

Pratt and Whitney's Columbus Engine Center overhauls and manufactures aero-engine parts, which brings penetrant, eddy current and ultrasonic inspection of rotating parts. Kia's plant at West Point and its suppliers add automotive manufacturing and welding work.

South Georgia

Southern Nuclear's Plant Hatch near Baxley is Georgia's second nuclear site. South Georgia is also home to many pulp and paper mills, where recovery boilers, digesters and pressure vessels need regular UT, MT, PT and VT, plus military installations such as Moody AFB near Valdosta and the Marine Corps Logistics Base at Albany.

For any of these regions you can ask about onsite training for your Georgia crew.

Because aerospace is so central in Georgia, we are clear about scope: our courses are SNT-TC-1A-based. Many aerospace employers work to NAS 410 or military requirements; if yours does, your Level III maps our training into that system. Level III candidates can see ASNT Level III training, and UT Level II candidates can use our UT Level 2 practice questions.

Atlanta. Airline MRO and aerospace manufacturing dominate the specialist end of the market, while construction and infrastructure dominate volume. A technician who wants a long Atlanta career often holds ET and UT for aerospace work, or UT and VT with structural-steel code knowledge for construction. See the Atlanta training page.

Savannah. Gulfstream and its supplier base, the port, the LNG terminal and the new Hyundai cluster give Savannah unusually diverse NDT demand for a mid-sized city. Onsite training works well for supplier plants that need several technicians qualified at once.

Augusta. Vogtle outages create surges of nuclear inspection work; contractor technicians often study theory online between outages. Paper and chemical plants provide steadier, year-round demand.

Warner Robins and Macon. Depot maintenance on military aircraft is ET-, UT- and PT-heavy and works under technical orders. Our SNT-TC-1A training covers the method fundamentals those programmes build on.

Columbus and Brunswick. Engine overhaul in Columbus means PT, ET and UT on rotating parts; Brunswick and Kings Bay add marine, port and paper-mill work.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Georgia, step by step

Direct answer: Georgia does not certify NDT technicians. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you after you meet its written practice: training hours, experience, general, specific and practical exams administered by a Level III, and a vision test.

  1. The written practice. Your employer's document, based on SNT-TC-1A, sets methods, levels, training and experience, exams and recertification. No practice yet? See written practice development.
  2. Formal classroom training. Hours per method and level per the written practice; see the training requirements matrix for SNT-TC-1A guideline figures.
  3. On-the-job experience. Logged in the method on the work you will perform, under qualified supervision.
  4. General, specific and practical exams. Prepared and administered by a Level III; practicals are performed on real specimens.
  5. Vision tests. Annual near-vision acuity and colour contrast as required.
  6. Employer certification. Documented and valid with that employer.
  7. Recertification. At the interval and by the method the practice defines.

The ASNT NDT Level III certificate is issued by ASNT through examination; the employer then certifies its Level III. More on SNT-TC-1A training and certification.

Radiography licensing and other Georgia requirements

Direct answer: Georgia is an NRC Agreement State, and has been since 1969. Industrial radiography with radioactive sources in Georgia is licensed and inspected by the Radioactive Materials Program of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) under the Georgia Rules and Regulations for Radioactive Materials, Chapter 391-3-17, rather than by the NRC.

Georgia's rules for industrial radiography (Rule 391-3-17-.04) are compatible with the NRC's 10 CFR Part 34 and cover radiation-safety training, radiographer and radiographer-trainee qualification, personnel monitoring, survey instruments, field crews and recordkeeping. Industrial radiography licensees are in the programme's highest inspection-frequency category, and the programme administers an industrial radiographer examination route. X-ray equipment is handled separately from radioactive-materials licensing; ask the state which office covers your equipment. Out-of-state radiography companies bringing isotope cameras into Georgia need to address reciprocity before working. Radiation-safety training and radiographer certification are separate from SNT-TC-1A RT method training, which teaches technique and interpretation; your crew needs both. Confirm current requirements with Georgia EPD before field work.

Boilers and pressure vessels. Georgia's Boilers and Pressure Vessels programme is administered by the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. Georgia adopts ASME and National Board codes, so ASME Section V NDT and Section I or VIII acceptance criteria apply to new construction, and National Board Inspection Code rules apply to repairs.

Pipelines. The Georgia Public Service Commission oversees intrastate natural gas pipeline safety; interstate gas lines and hazardous-liquid lines such as the Colonial and Plantation pipelines are regulated by PHMSA. Weld inspection generally follows API 1104 and operator qualification programmes.

Codes common in Georgia. ASME Section XI at Vogtle and Hatch; ASME Section I and B31.1 in power and paper; ASME V, VIII and B31.3 in process plants and LNG; AWS D1.1 in construction and AASHTO/AWS D1.5 on GDOT bridges; API 1104 on pipelines; NAVSEA requirements at Kings Bay; and aerospace specifications such as NAS 410 and military technical orders in aviation (context only).

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Georgia

Direct answer: Georgia crews can take Atlantis NDT theory live online or in live-virtual cohorts, or receive Level III-led training onsite at their facility. Practical exams always use real specimens under Level III oversight.

Georgia scheduling has its own patterns. Nuclear refuelling outages at Vogtle and Hatch pull contract technicians into intense multi-week assignments, so online theory between outages is the practical option. Airline MRO and depot maintenance run year-round on shift patterns, so evening or split-shift online sessions suit those technicians. Construction work is steady but deadline-driven, and onsite sessions at a fabrication yard or shop fit between pours and erection sequences. Paper mills schedule annual outages, and summer heat and hurricane season on the coast affect field work in Savannah and Brunswick. Onsite delivery uses your equipment, procedures and parts, and suits supplier plants in the new automotive cluster that need several technicians qualified quickly. For Georgia employers: written practice and Level III services

Direct answer: Georgia employers that certify their own NDT staff need an SNT-TC-1A written practice, a qualified Level III and clean records. Atlantis NDT writes and reviews written practices, provides Level III services and runs corporate training programmes for Georgia companies.

New manufacturing plants and their suppliers are a particular focus in Georgia right now. A supplier setting up near Savannah or in West Georgia may need to stand up an NDT function quickly, with a written practice, procedures, trained staff and exams, to satisfy an automotive or aerospace customer. Established companies often need a review because their practice has drifted from what they actually do. We help with:

Practise before your practical exam

Direct answer: The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets Georgia trainees practise 12 NDT methods in 5 virtual environments before the hands-on exam. It is practice only and does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.

The aircraft hangar environment is especially relevant in Georgia, matching airline MRO in Atlanta, business-jet work in Savannah and depot maintenance in Warner Robins. The welding workshop matches construction and fabrication, and the oil and gas site and storage tank environments match pipeline, LNG and process work. See Practical NDT and Practical NDT Georgia.
