Atlanta's method mix is set by engines, not pipe
The single largest NDT employer in the metro is an engine shop. Delta TechOps is the largest airline maintenance, repair and overhaul provider in North America, holds FAA repair station certificate DALR026A and EASA.145.4380, and operates certified repair station locations in Atlanta and Minneapolis. Read that list against a refinery's and the difference is structural. There is no phased array corrosion mapping on it, no automated UT of girth welds, no tank floor scanning. Instead there is Barkhausen noise — a residual-stress and grinding-burn method for hardened rotating components — and infrared, and a heavy weighting toward eddy current and fluorescent penetrant, which are the two methods that dominate high-volume machined-part inspection.

Part 145 is a regulation about organisations. ASNT delivers its NDT Level II written examinations as computer-based tests through Pearson VUE, and separately recognises a small number of Authorized Exam Centers. There are three: Houston, Marietta in Georgia, and one in Saudi Arabia. Marietta is operated by Applied Technical Services, which has run laboratory testing, calibration, NDT and consulting engineering from that site since 1967 and is recognised by ASNT for computer-based and practical examinations. The power generation lane: Vogtle, Bowen and Scherer

Crane, hoist and lifting equipment inspection is the quietest reliable demand in a logistics metro. It runs on MT, PT, VT and UT of terminations, and it does not follow the aerospace or power cycles.

MRO and generation both run rosters that make a twelve-consecutive-day radiography course impossible for most incumbent staff. Hours and experience: what you must be able to evidence
Two counting systems run in parallel and Atlanta candidates mix them constantly. SNT-TC-1A counts in hours: UT is 40 formal training hours at Level I and 40 more at Level II, backed by 210 method hours and 400 total NDT hours for Level I rising to 630 method hours and 1,200 total for Level II. RT mirrors UT at 40 and 40. MT is 12 then 8, PT 4 then 8, VT 8 then 16.
The ASNT NDT Level II certification programme counts in days: MT three training days, PT two, RT twelve, UT twelve, VT four. Its experience requirements run in days as well — MT 40 method days against 76 total, PT 30 against 58, VT 30 against 58, and RT and UT each 120 method days against 229 total NDT days.

The five-year clock and what breaks it
ASNT NDT Level II certification renews on a five-year cycle. NAS 410 fixes recertification at five years as well. SNT-TC-1A leaves the interval to the employer, commonly three to five years, stated in the written practice. Whichever governs you, the clock is the least of the risks — what actually breaks certifications is a lapse in the supporting evidence rather than a missed date.
Three failure modes recur. Vision testing lapses, which invalidates every examination performed after the expiry under a NAS 410 written practice. Method scope drifts, where a shop adopts phased array or digital radiography without amending the written practice or requalifying personnel. And the responsible Level III leaves, which leaves every certificate issued under their signature without a technically accountable owner.
All three are audit findings, and all three are retroactive. Employers who cannot keep a Level III on staff between recruitments use ASNT Level III consulting to hold the accountability without a permanent headcount.
What method should an Atlanta NDT candidate certify in first?
Eddy current, if aerospace is the target. Atlanta's dominant employer runs ET across engine and airframe work, and ET Level II is the credential that separates candidates in an MRO hiring pool.
