Charlotte technicians and employers can get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III NDT training from Atlantis NDT as online classes that are primarily self-paced, or onsite courses at their own plant, shop or outage site anywhere in the Charlotte metro. An ASNT NDT Level III leads every programme, and the hours are recorded against your employer's written practice so they count toward certification. Methods: UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation.
Charlotte is a power-generation city first. Duke Energy is headquartered uptown, two nuclear stations sit within an hour's drive, the EPRI NDE Center on West W.T. Harris Boulevard qualifies ultrasonic examiners for the whole US nuclear fleet, and Siemens Energy builds large generators and turbine components on the west side. Around that core sit aerospace (Collins Aerospace's headquarters and the American Airlines hub at Charlotte Douglas), motorsport engineering in Concord and Mooresville, structural steel fabricators along I-85 and I-77, and the Paw Creek fuel terminals fed by the Colonial and Plantation pipelines. This page is built around that map. If you already know what you need, request a Charlotte training quote and we reply within one business day.

NDT training in Charlotte: how it works for Charlotte employers and technicians
In Charlotte, NDT certification is issued by your employer, not by a school. You complete classroom training for each method and level, log on-the-job experience, then pass general, specific and practical exams administered under an ASNT Level III, plus a vision test. Atlantis NDT supplies the training, the Level III oversight and the paperwork, delivered online or onsite at your facility.
That distinction matters because most "NDT training Charlotte" searches mix three different things: a two-year college programme, a short certification course, and the employer certification itself. Under ASNT's Recommended Practice SNT-TC-1A, a Level II UT technician at a Charlotte fabricator is certified by that fabricator, against its own written practice, signed by its responsible Level III. A training provider can give you documented hours and exam preparation; it cannot hand you a portable "licence" that every employer must accept. A good course is one your employer's Level III can audit and accept without argument.
Atlantis builds training to be accepted that way. Every course record shows the method, level, topics, instructor, contact hours and exam results, laid out so a Level III or a customer auditor can trace it back to the written practice. For employers, we can also review or write the written practice itself, act as an outside Level III, and run the exams. For individual technicians, we explain exactly which parts you can complete online and which need hands-on time with real specimens.
Two hypothetical Charlotte scenarios show how this plays out. Suppose a structural fabricator in Gastonia needs three welders cross-trained to VT and MT Level II for AWS D1.1 work: we run an online theory block, then an onsite practical session on their own weldments, then exams against their written practice. A contractor supporting an outage at McGuire needs UT technicians refreshed before they sit an EPRI performance demonstration: we deliver focused UT theory and practice so they arrive ready, while the demonstration itself remains EPRI's process, not ours.
ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in Charlotte
Atlantis NDT offers SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and Level II courses in eight methods and Level III exam preparation. Charlotte employers most often ask for UT and PAUT (power-plant welds and fabrication), MT and VT (structural steel), PT and ET (aircraft and turbine parts) and RT (piping and pressure parts).
| Method | Levels | What Charlotte employers use it for | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) | I, II, III prep | Weld and thickness inspection in power plants, generator and turbine components, structural fabrication, fuel terminal tanks and piping | None for Level I; Level I hours and experience for Level II per written practice |
| Phased Array UT (PAUT) | I, II | Pressure-boundary and piping welds during outages, thick fabrication welds, encoded scans that replace RT on some jobs | Usually UT Level II first |
| Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) | I, II | Sizing of planar flaws in thick welds, often paired with PAUT on heavy-wall components | Usually UT Level II first |
| Radiographic Testing (RT) | I, II | Piping and pressure-vessel welds, castings, pipeline tie-ins; film and digital techniques | Radiation safety training plus NC licensing rules for the employer |
| Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) | I, II | Structural steel, crane and lifting gear, race-car chassis and suspension parts, rotating equipment | None for Level I |
| Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) | I, II | Aircraft and engine parts, stainless and non-magnetic welds, turbine blades, valve bodies | None for Level I |
| Visual Testing (VT) | I, II | Weld inspection under AWS D1.1, in-service visual examinations, receiving inspection | None for Level I |
| Eddy Current Testing (ET) | I, II | Heat-exchanger and condenser tubing, aircraft surface and bolt-hole inspection, conductivity checks | None for Level I |
Course pages with more detail: UT Level 1, UT Level 2, PAUT Level 2, TOFD, RT Level 2, MT Level 2, PT Level 2, VT Level 2 and ET Level 2. For Level III candidates, see ASNT Level III training. Charlotte has two specialist pages too: nuclear NDT training in Charlotte and power generation NDT training in Charlotte.
Method spotlight for Charlotte: UT and PAUT for power generation. If one method defines the Charlotte market it is ultrasonics on power-plant components. Nuclear in-service inspection under ASME Section XI requires UT examiners to pass performance demonstrations, which for the US fleet are administered through the EPRI Performance Demonstration Initiative here in Charlotte. Fossil and gas-turbine plants use UT and PAUT on boiler headers, steam piping, rotor bores and generator retaining rings. A technician who is solid on UT Level II fundamentals, calibration and flaw characterisation is the person every outage contractor in the region is looking for.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in Charlotte, step by step
The path is the same in Charlotte as anywhere in the US: written practice, formal training, experience, three exams, vision test, certification, then recertification on the cycle your written practice sets. What changes locally is which methods and codes your employer needs.
- Find the governing written practice. Your employer's written practice sets the training hours, experience hours, exam content and pass marks for each method and level. If your company does not have one, see written practice development.
- Complete formal classroom training. Theory hours for the method and level, delivered online or onsite. The recommended minimums are summarised in the training requirements matrix; your written practice may require more.
- Log on-the-job experience. Supervised experience in the method, recorded with dates, hours and the supervising certified person. Many Charlotte technicians build this on outages and fabrication jobs.
- Pass the general exam. A closed-book written exam on method principles.
- Pass the specific exam. Questions on your employer's procedures, equipment, codes and acceptance criteria, for example ASME Section V, Section XI or AWS D1.1.
- Pass the practical exam. Hands-on examination of real specimens with known flaws, graded under a Level III. This is the part that cannot be done purely online.
- Pass the vision test. Near-vision acuity annually and colour contrast differentiation as required.
- Get certified by your employer. The Level III and the employer sign the certification, which stays valid while you work for that employer.
- Recertify. On the interval your written practice sets, by exam or by documented continuing performance. Level III candidates also look at ASNT's own Level III certification.
Online or onsite NDT training for Charlotte crews
Atlantis NDT has no training centre in Charlotte. Theory is delivered online, and practical training and exams take place onsite at your Charlotte-area facility under Level III supervision. That keeps crews close to work and lets you schedule around outages.
The Charlotte calendar is driven by outages. Nuclear refuelling outages at McGuire and Catawba, gas-turbine and generator overhauls, and spring and fall maintenance seasons at fossil and combined-cycle plants all pull NDT technicians away for weeks at a time. Online theory can be split into shorter blocks so technicians do not lose a full week, and onsite practical sessions can be booked into the gaps between outages. For fabricators, onsite delivery means training on your own joint designs, thicknesses and acceptance criteria rather than generic samples.
- Online: primarily self-paced classes with Level III support and enrolment open all year, suitable for individual technicians across the Carolinas.
- Onsite at your facility: theory and practical in your shop, plant or outage trailer, with your specimens and equipment.
- Blended: theory online, then a short onsite block for practical training and exams.
See NDT training online for how remote theory works and corporate NDT training for crew programmes. To plan training around your next outage, ask about onsite training for your Charlotte crew.
Where NDT technicians work in Charlotte
Charlotte NDT jobs cluster in nuclear and fossil power, power-equipment manufacturing, aerospace and airline maintenance, motorsport engineering, structural steel and fuel distribution. Each sector asks for different methods, codes and documentation, so training should match the employer.
Nuclear and power generation
Duke Energy, headquartered in Charlotte, operates McGuire Nuclear Station on Lake Norman near Huntersville and Catawba Nuclear Station just across the state line in York County, South Carolina, along with coal, gas and hydro plants across the Catawba River basin. Outage work brings in ISI contractors who need UT, PAUT, ET, VT and PT under ASME Section XI, with the strict documentation and quality-assurance culture of 10 CFR 50 Appendix B suppliers. The EPRI NDE Center in Charlotte develops inspection techniques and runs the Performance Demonstration Initiative for ultrasonic examination qualification.
Power-equipment manufacturing
Siemens Energy's Charlotte facility manufactures large generators and turbine components, and the region has a cluster of power-equipment suppliers and service shops. Forgings, castings and welded assemblies are inspected with UT, MT, PT and RT, often to customer specifications on top of ASME codes.
Aerospace and aviation
Collins Aerospace is headquartered in Charlotte, and Charlotte Douglas International Airport is a major American Airlines hub with maintenance operations. Aerospace work uses ET, PT, UT and MT on structures and components. Many aerospace primes certify personnel under NAS 410 rather than SNT-TC-1A; Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A-based, so check what your employer requires.
Motorsport and advanced manufacturing
Concord and Mooresville host many NASCAR race shops and their suppliers. Chassis, suspension and drivetrain parts are routinely checked with MT and PT, and some teams use UT and ET. It is a small but distinctive local niche for NDT technicians.
Structural steel, bridges and fuel terminals
Structural fabricators and erectors across Mecklenburg, Gaston, Cabarrus and York counties inspect to AWS D1.1, and NCDOT bridges use AWS D1.5. The Paw Creek terminal area west of the airport receives fuel through the Colonial and Plantation pipelines, adding API 653-style tank work and pipeline weld inspection to API 1104 (Atlantis teaches the NDT methods, not API inspector programmes). Interstate gas transmission lines cross the Piedmont as well.
Radiography licensing and other North Carolina requirements
North Carolina is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography with radioactive sources is licensed by the Radiation Protection Section of the NC Department of Health and Human Services (Division of Health Service Regulation), under 10A NCAC 15, which mirrors 10 CFR Part 34. X-ray equipment is registered with the same Section.
For a Charlotte RT technician this means the employer holds the radioactive materials licence, and you work as a radiographer or radiographer's assistant under that licence, with radiation safety training, personnel monitoring and the radiographer certification required by the rules. An NDT RT Level II certificate under SNT-TC-1A is a separate thing from radiation safety qualification; you need both to work independently. Atlantis RT courses cover the NDT method; radiation safety qualification follows your employer's licence and the state rules. Confirm current requirements with the Radiation Protection Section before starting RT work.
Work at McGuire is regulated by the NRC directly as a reactor licensee. Catawba is in South Carolina, which is also an Agreement State with its own radiation programme, so crews crossing the state line should check which licence covers their work.
Other local authorities: boilers and pressure vessels are inspected under the North Carolina Department of Labor Boiler Safety Bureau; intrastate gas pipeline safety sits with the North Carolina Utilities Commission, with interstate lines under PHMSA. Charlotte is inland, but technicians who travel to the Port of Wilmington or to coastal terminals may need a TWIC card for secure areas. Codes you will meet locally: ASME Section V and Section XI, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, AWS D1.1 and D1.5, and API 1104.
Local options compared: Charlotte NDT schools and Atlantis
Charlotte has a strong public option: Central Piedmont Community College runs an associate degree in Nondestructive Examination Technology. The ASNT Charlotte Section holds local meetings. Atlantis NDT is different: short, employer-focused SNT-TC-1A courses delivered online or onsite, with Level III and written-practice support.
| Option | Best for | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Central Piedmont Community College (A.A.S. in Nondestructive Examination Technology) | New entrants who want a full two-year qualification | Semester-based, on campus |
| ASNT Charlotte Section | Networking, technical talks, meeting local employers | Section meetings |
| National training companies | Technicians able to travel to a fixed classroom | Scheduled public classes |
| Atlantis NDT | Employers training crews, and technicians who need specific methods and levels around a work schedule | Online or onsite at your facility, Level III-led |
These are not either-or. A CPCC graduate still needs employer certification and often extra methods; an employer with a CPCC hire may use Atlantis to add PAUT or a Level III-run exam. Pick what fits your timeline and your employer's written practice.
Level III services and written practices for Charlotte NDT companies
Charlotte NDT companies, fabricators and plant contractors can use Atlantis NDT for a written practice, an outside Level III, exam administration and audit preparation. That turns training into certifications an auditor will accept.
Smaller Charlotte shops often have certified technicians but no Level III on staff, or a written practice that has not been revised since it was copied from a former employer. When a customer auditor or an ASME/nuclear supplier audit arrives, the gaps show: missing experience logs, exams that do not match the procedure, vision tests out of date. Atlantis can write or revise the written practice (written practice development), act as Level III, prepare and grade exams, and organise the records. For the employer side of SNT-TC-1A, see SNT-TC-1A training and certification and the employer certification programme.
If your Charlotte company works for nuclear customers, our consulting team covers supplier-audit readiness at nuclear NDT consulting in Charlotte; for Level III consulting across the state, see NDT consulting in North Carolina. To talk it through, book a Level III consultation for your Charlotte company.
Practise before the practical exam
The practical exam is done on real specimens under a Level III, onsite at your employer or at an arranged site. Before that, the Practical NDT 3D simulator lets Charlotte trainees practise 12 method families in twelve virtual workplaces. It is practice only and does not replace the practical exam.
Practical NDT includes an NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site and storage tank, so a trainee can rehearse scanning patterns, probe handling and indication recognition before touching real equipment. Charlotte trainees can start at Practical NDT in Charlotte or the main Practical NDT page; the state version is at Practical NDT in North Carolina.
Your instructor
Courses are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He designs the course content, reviews written practices and oversees exams so that training records stand up to employer and customer audits.
Frequently asked questions about NDT training in Charlotte
How do I get NDT certified in Charlotte, NC?
Get hired or sponsored by an employer with an SNT-TC-1A written practice, complete formal training for the method and level, log the required experience, pass general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and pass a vision test. Your employer then certifies you. Atlantis can provide the training and, for employers, the Level III and exams.
How much does an NDT course cost in Charlotte?
It depends on the methods, the levels, the number of trainees, whether theory is online or onsite, and the practical specimens needed. Atlantis quotes on request; we reply within one business day. Request a Charlotte NDT course quote.
How much does NDT school cost compared with a short course?
A two-year college programme like CPCC's and a short employer-focused certification course are different products, priced differently. College tuition is published by the college; short-course pricing depends on scope. The cost question to ask is which path gets you certified by the employer you want to work for.
How long is the NDT training course?
Each method and level has its own recommended training hours and experience hours, and your employer's written practice may require more. See the training requirements matrix. Online theory can be split into shorter blocks around work.
Which NDT course is best to start with?
For Charlotte, VT, MT and PT are the usual first methods, and UT is the most useful next step because of power-generation demand. PAUT and TOFD come after UT Level II.
Which NDT certification is best?
The one your employer and its customers require. For most US industrial work that is SNT-TC-1A employer certification; nuclear ISI adds performance demonstration; many aerospace primes use NAS 410. Level III candidates often add ASNT's own Level III certificate.
Can I take NDT training online in North Carolina?
Yes for theory. The practical training and exam need real specimens and a Level III, done onsite at your employer or at an arranged site. See NDT training online.
Do I need a license for radiography in North Carolina?
The employer needs a radioactive materials licence from the NC DHHS Radiation Protection Section, and radiographers must meet the state's training and certification rules. An SNT-TC-1A RT certificate alone is not enough to work independently.
Can you train our crew onsite in Charlotte, Concord or Gastonia?
Yes. Onsite delivery is the main way Atlantis trains crews: theory and practical at your facility, scheduled around outages or production. Plan onsite NDT training in the Charlotte area.
Is ASNT SNT-TC-1A certification recognised by Charlotte employers?
SNT-TC-1A is the most widely used basis for employer certification in US industry, including power generation and fabrication. Recognition always runs through the employer's written practice, which is why training records need to line up with it.
Can I use the GI Bill or WIOA for NDT training?
Those programmes generally require an approved school or provider. Atlantis does not claim those approvals; check with the programme administrator. Many Charlotte technicians are trained through employer-paid programmes instead.
Do I need an EPRI qualification for nuclear UT work?
For ASME Section XI ultrasonic examinations covered by performance demonstration requirements, yes, the examiner must be qualified through the demonstration programme. Solid UT Level II training comes first; the demonstration is a separate step.
Where else does Atlantis offer NDT training in the Carolinas and Southeast?
Yes. See the North Carolina NDT training hub, the Southeast hub and the US training locations, including Atlanta.

Why Charlotte needs certified NDT personnel
Charlotte sits on power generation engineering including nuclear, energy equipment manufacturing and general heavy industry. That industrial base is what creates sustained demand for qualified inspection personnel here: the assets in question — turbine and generator components, nuclear plant equipment, pressure vessels and heavy weldments — are examined on intervals set by code rather than by preference, and the examinations have to be performed and interpreted by people whose qualification can be evidenced.
In practice that means the methods pulled hardest in this market are ultrasonic and phased array, radiography, magnetic particle and penetrant, with nuclear-specific qualification. A qualification programme built for Charlotte should follow that demand rather than cover every method thinly.
Which level you need for Charlotte work
Level I performs specific calibrations and examinations and records results under direction. It is where most people entering Charlotte inspection work start, and for turbine and generator components it is usually reached in a single method first rather than several at once.
Level II sets up and calibrates equipment, interprets and evaluates results against the applicable code, and writes the report. This is the level most contracts in North Carolina actually specify, because it is the level that can make an accept-or-reject call without supervision.
Level III establishes techniques and procedures, approves them, interprets codes and specifications, and takes responsibility for the qualification and examination of Level I and II personnel. It is also the level that signs the Written Practice an auditor will ask for. For operators running ultrasonic and phased array across multiple sites, Level III capability is the difference between owning your inspection programme and renting it.
How training reaches Charlotte
Atlantis does not operate a classroom in Charlotte, and it is worth being straightforward about that rather than implying otherwise. Training is delivered on-site at your own facility anywhere in North Carolina and the surrounding region — which for a corporate buyer is usually the better arrangement anyway, since the practical specimens can reflect the turbine and generator components your people will actually be examining, and nobody loses days to travel.
Where you have only one or two candidates, they can enrol online at any time of year: theory is primarily self-paced, practice runs in the Practical NDT simulator, and the supervised practical takes place at the employer's own facility. Which route is right depends on headcount and on how quickly you need people qualified; tell us both and we will say plainly which we would recommend.
Certification route: ASNT, ISO 9712, and which your employer needs
Two models operate in the United States and they are not interchangeable. Under SNT-TC-1A, certification is granted by the employer against the employer's own Written Practice — flexible, and the reason auditors ask to see that document rather than a certificate. ISO 9712 and schemes such as PCN and CSWIP certify through an independent body, so the certificate is portable between employers. ANSI/ASNT CP-189 sits between them as a standard rather than a recommended practice.
Which you need is a contractual question, not a technical one. Plenty of North Carolina contracts name one specifically, and candidates who choose the wrong route lose months. If you are unsure which your client base expects, that is worth a five-minute conversation before you enrol anyone.
Frequently asked questions
Is there NDT training near me in Charlotte?
Atlantis delivers training on-site at facilities across North Carolina rather than from a fixed classroom in Charlotte. For a team, that is normally faster and cheaper than sending people away; for an individual, online enrolment, which is open all year, is usually the better route. Tell us which you are and we will point you at the honest option, including if that is someone else.
How long does it take to qualify at Level II?
It depends on the method and on how much documented experience you already hold, because the requirement is training hours and experience hours, not training alone. Someone already working under supervision in the method progresses considerably faster than someone starting cold. We will map your existing hours against the requirement before you commit to anything.
Can our own staff be certified without an outside body?
Under SNT-TC-1A, yes — that is precisely the model, and it requires a compliant Written Practice and a qualified Level III to administer it. Many operators use an outsourced Level III for exactly this. If you do not currently have one, that is the gap to close first, because without it the certifications you issue will not survive an audit.
Do you train all methods?
UT, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus advanced techniques including phased array and TOFD. API 510, 570 and 653 inspector certifications are separate and are sat through API. For a Charlotte programme we would normally suggest starting with ultrasonic and phased array and adding from there as the work demands.

Looking for NDT training near you?
Searches like "NDT training near me" and "NDT certification near me" usually mean one of two things: a company that needs a crew qualified without losing them to travel, or an individual looking for the closest route to a certificate. Both are answerable from Charlotte.
For companies, proximity is solved by delivery rather than address — programmes run on-site at your facility, so the training comes to the crew and the practical work uses specimens matching what your people actually examine. For individuals, online enrolment is open all year: theory is primarily self-paced, practice runs in the Practical NDT simulator, and the supervised practical takes place at the employer's facility, so no local classroom is needed.
