NDT Training and Certification in North Carolina
North Carolina technicians and employers can take ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III NDT training from Atlantis NDT live online, in live-virtual cohorts, or onsite at their own plant, hangar or shop. Courses are led by an ASNT NDT Level III and aligned with the employer's written practice, so training counts toward certification. Methods: UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation.
North Carolina's NDT market looks different from the Gulf Coast states. There are no oil refineries here. Instead, demand comes from nuclear and fossil power generation, turbine and generator manufacturing, aerospace manufacturing and military aircraft maintenance, steel and heavy equipment, pipelines and an enormous highway bridge inventory. Charlotte is also home to EPRI's NDE Center, one of the best-known nondestructive evaluation research facilities in the power industry. This page maps that work by region and explains how certification, radiography licensing and boiler rules apply in North Carolina. Ready now? Request a North Carolina training quote.
Where NDT technicians work in North Carolina
North Carolina NDT work clusters around Charlotte's power and energy-equipment sector, the Piedmont Triad's aerospace manufacturing and MRO, the Research Triangle's advanced manufacturing, eastern military aviation at Havelock and Goldsboro, the Wilmington nuclear and port corridor, and Asheville's turbine-component manufacturing, with pipelines and bridges statewide.
Charlotte and the Catawba region
Charlotte is the headquarters of Duke Energy, and the surrounding region has some of the most concentrated power-generation work in the Southeast. Duke's McGuire nuclear station sits on Lake Norman north of the city, and Catawba nuclear station is just across the South Carolina line. Siemens Energy builds gas turbines and generators in Charlotte, and EPRI's NDE Center develops and qualifies inspection techniques used across the nuclear and fossil fleet. Typical work: UT, PAUT and ET in nuclear outages under ASME Section XI, UT and MT on turbine and generator components, RT and UT on power piping, and boiler-tube thickness surveys at fossil plants. See our nuclear NDT training in Charlotte and power-generation NDT training in Charlotte pages.
Piedmont Triad: Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point
Greensboro's Piedmont Triad International Airport is an aerospace cluster: HAECO Americas performs heavy aircraft maintenance there, Honda Aircraft Company builds business jets, and Boom Supersonic has built its aircraft factory at the airport. Aircraft MRO is heavy on ET, PT, UT and VT, and manufacturing adds PT and UT on aluminium and composite structures. The Triad also has furniture-industry and heavy-equipment manufacturing, truck and bus plants, and steel fabrication.
Research Triangle: Raleigh, Durham and Cary
The Triangle is better known for life sciences and technology, but it also supports NDT employers: pharmaceutical and biologics manufacturing with stainless process piping (VT, PT, RT on orbital welds), electrical equipment makers, Duke's Shearon Harris nuclear plant at New Hill in Wake County, and the engineering firms that inspect NCDOT bridges. Toyota's battery manufacturing site at Liberty, south of the Triad, adds new automotive-industry demand.
Eastern North Carolina: Havelock, Goldsboro, Fayetteville and Jacksonville
Fleet Readiness Center East at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock is a major military aircraft maintenance depot, with substantial ET, UT, PT, MT and RT work on airframes, engines and components. Seymour Johnson Air Force Base at Goldsboro operates fighter aircraft, Fort Bragg near Fayetteville is one of the largest Army installations in the country, and Camp Lejeune is at Jacksonville. Contractors supporting these sites need SNT-TC-1A-certified technicians and often NAS 410 or military-specific requirements. See NDT training in Fayetteville, NC.
Wilmington and the coast
Wilmington hosts GE's nuclear fuel and engineering operations at Castle Hayne, the Port of Wilmington's terminals, and chemical plants along the Cape Fear River. Duke's Brunswick nuclear plant at Southport and the Port of Morehead City add outage and marine work. Coastal humidity and salt make corrosion monitoring with UT a constant need.
Western North Carolina and the mountains
Pratt and Whitney manufactures turbine airfoils in the Asheville area, a high-precision casting and machining operation where FPI, X-ray and other NDT methods are part of production. The mountain region also has hydroelectric dams, paper and specialty-materials plants and Interstate bridges through difficult terrain.
Steel, pipelines and bridges statewide
Nucor operates a steel plate mill in Hertford County in the northeast. Interstate gas transmission lines and refined-product pipelines, including the Colonial system through the Piedmont, cross the state; Colonial's 2020 gasoline release near Huntersville was a reminder of why in-service integrity inspection matters. NCDOT maintains one of the largest state-owned highway systems in the country, with thousands of bridges that need steel and weld inspection.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in North Carolina, step by step
North Carolina does not license NDT technicians. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you after you complete method training, log documented experience, pass general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III and pass a vision test.
- Employer written practice defines levels, training, experience, exams and recertification for each method.
- Classroom training in the method, online, live-virtual or onsite. SNT-TC-1A recommended minimums are on the training requirements matrix.
- On-the-job experience, supervised and documented: boiler-tube UT at a Duke fossil unit, ET on airframes at Havelock, MT on bridge girders.
- General exam on the principles of the method.
- Specific exam on your employer's procedures, equipment and codes, such as ASME Section V, ASME Section XI or AWS D1.5.
- Practical exam on real specimens with known discontinuities, graded by a Level III.
- Vision test, near-vision and colour contrast, annually.
- Certification issued and documented by the employer.
- Recertification at the interval the written practice sets.
Nuclear work adds another layer: in-service UT on certain components is performed under ASME Section XI Appendix VIII performance demonstration, administered through EPRI's Performance Demonstration Initiative. That is beyond SNT-TC-1A method certification, but a strong Level II foundation is the starting point. More on the employer-based model at SNT-TC-1A training and certification.
Radiography licensing and other North Carolina requirements
North Carolina is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography with radioactive materials is licensed by the Radioactive Materials Branch of the Radiation Protection Section, within the NC Department of Health and Human Services, under state rules in Title 10A, Chapter 15 of the NC Administrative Code, which require compliance with the industrial radiography requirements of 10 CFR Part 34.
The Radiation Protection Section licenses both booth and field industrial radiography and also registers radiation-producing machines such as industrial x-ray units. Licensed companies need a radiation safety officer, trained and certified radiographers, supervised assistants, dosimetry and survey programmes. Out-of-state licensees working in North Carolina use the state's reciprocal recognition process before starting work. SNT-TC-1A RT method certification is separate: an RT technician needs both. Confirm current requirements with the Radiation Protection Section before mobilising a crew.
Boilers and pressure vessels. The North Carolina Department of Labor's Boiler Safety Bureau inspects and certifies boilers and pressure vessels under the state Uniform Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act. Inspectors hold National Board commissions, and repairs and alterations follow the National Board Inspection Code, with NDT requirements from ASME Section V and the construction code. Power plants, mills and manufacturing plants are the main sources of this work.
Pipelines. Intrastate gas pipeline safety is overseen by the North Carolina Utilities Commission's pipeline safety programme, and PHMSA regulates interstate gas and hazardous-liquid pipelines. API 1104 governs most pipeline weld inspection, with operator qualification rules covering many tasks.
Codes in local use (context only). ASME Section XI and plant-specific programmes at McGuire, Harris and Brunswick; ASME Section I, V and VIII and B31.1 at fossil and gas plants; AWS D1.1 and D1.5 for structural steel and bridges; API 1104 for pipelines; and NAS 410 or military requirements for aerospace and defence work. Some North Carolina employers also ask for AWS CWI or API inspector credentials, which are separate schemes; Atlantis training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based.
Online, live-virtual and onsite training across North Carolina
North Carolina crews can take NDT theory live online, join a live-virtual cohort, or have a Level III-led programme delivered onsite at their facility. Practical training and practical exams are performed on real specimens at the employer's site or another agreed arrangement.
North Carolina is about 500 miles from Murphy to Manteo. Online theory lets a technician in Asheville and one in Havelock join the same live class without travel, with interactive Level III instruction rather than recorded videos alone. See NDT training online for how sessions run.
Onsite courses suit power plants, MRO hangars, manufacturing plants and fabricators that want a group trained on their own components and procedures. We plan dates around North Carolina's work calendar: spring and fall refuelling and maintenance outages across the Duke fleet, aircraft induction schedules at depots and MRO hangars, production ramps in aerospace manufacturing, and the bridge-inspection season. Multi-site companies can use corporate NDT training to keep records consistent across states. Ask about onsite training for your North Carolina crew.
For North Carolina employers: written practice and Level III services
North Carolina companies that certify NDT personnel under SNT-TC-1A need a written practice and Level III oversight. Atlantis NDT writes and updates written practices, administers and grades exams, reviews procedures and serves as an outside Level III for companies without one.
The Triad's aerospace suppliers, Charlotte's energy-equipment fabricators and eastern North Carolina's defence contractors frequently need certified inspectors before they have the internal structure to certify them. A new supplier qualifying to an aerospace prime, a fabricator taking on power-plant work or a contractor whose Level III has left all need a written practice that matches their actual methods and customers. Our written practice development service delivers that, and the SNT-TC-1A guide explains what customer and registrar auditors look for.
Level III support covers procedures and technique sheets, exam administration and grading, training and experience record review, and audit readiness. For broader programme work, see NDT consulting in North Carolina. Book a Level III consultation for your North Carolina company.
Practise before your practical exam
Practical NDT, Atlantis NDT's 3D simulator, lets trainees practise 12 methods in 5 environments: an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It is practice only and does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.
The aircraft hangar matches the MRO and depot work at Greensboro and Havelock. The welding workshop matches Charlotte's and the Triad's fabricators. The NDT lab scenes help trainees rehearse calibration and set-up before working on real power-plant or aerospace parts. Simulator time is not on-the-job experience and is not graded as a practical exam. Explore the Practical NDT simulator and the state page, Practical NDT for North Carolina.
Your instructor
Courses are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. As Level III he oversees course content, written practices, exams and practical grading criteria, so what a North Carolina technician learns lines up with how that technician is examined and certified. NDT training in North Carolina: frequently asked questions
How do I become NDT certified in North Carolina?
Most North Carolina NDT technicians are certified by their employer under ASNT SNT-TC-1A: classroom training in a method, documented experience, general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and a vision test. The employer then certifies you to its written practice. Atlantis NDT provides the training, exam support and written practice if needed.
Is there NDT training online in North Carolina?
Yes. Atlantis NDT runs live online NDT theory that technicians can join from Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Wilmington or anywhere in the state. Practical training and the practical exam require real specimens, arranged onsite at your employer or through an agreed arrangement.
Do I need a license to do radiography in North Carolina?
Your company needs a radioactive materials licence from the NC Radiation Protection Section, or registration for its x-ray equipment, and radiographers must meet state training and certification rules aligned with 10 CFR Part 34. This is separate from SNT-TC-1A RT certification. Confirm current requirements with the state.
How much does NDT training cost in North Carolina?
Quote on request. It depends on method, level, number of trainees, online or onsite delivery, and whether you need written-practice or exam services. Send your details and you will receive a quote within one business day.
Which NDT method is most in demand in North Carolina?
UT is the most widely used, especially in power generation. ET is in strong demand for aircraft maintenance and tubing inspection, PT and VT for aerospace and pharma manufacturing, and MT for bridges and heavy steel.
Can you train our crew onsite in Charlotte or Greensboro?
Yes. Onsite delivery is available at your facility anywhere in North Carolina, scheduled around outages and production. Atlantis NDT has no physical training centre in North Carolina; onsite means at your site.
Is SNT-TC-1A recognised by North Carolina employers?
Yes. SNT-TC-1A is the main employer-based NDT certification framework in the United States and is referenced by ASME and AWS codes. Nuclear and aerospace customers add their own requirements, which your written practice should address.
How long does Level II take?
It depends on your employer's written practice. SNT-TC-1A recommended minimum hours and experience are listed in the training requirements matrix; logging experience usually takes longer than the classroom part.
Do I need nuclear-specific qualification to work outages in North Carolina?
For many outage tasks, an SNT-TC-1A Level II under the contractor's written practice is the base, with site-specific training and badging on top. Certain UT examinations also require performance demonstration qualification under ASME Section XI Appendix VIII. See nuclear NDT training.
Can I start NDT training with no experience?
Yes. Level I has no experience prerequisite. Many North Carolina technicians start as helpers or trainees with an inspection contractor and train up to Level II as experience builds.
Can I prepare for ASNT Level III from North Carolina?
Yes. ASNT Level III training runs live online. Level II candidates can also use the UT Level 2 practice questions.
What do NDT technicians earn in North Carolina?
Pay varies by method, level, sector and outage travel. See our NDT Level 2 salary and NDT Level 3 salary guides for published ranges.
