VT. Visual testing is the first inspection on almost every repair. Training covers weld profile gauging, undercut and porosity assessment, lighting and access, and clear description in reports.

RT. Radiography remains common for piping and pressure repairs. The course covers exposure technique, image quality indicators, film and digital radiography and interpretation. On busy piers and inside ships, radiation exclusion zones are a real scheduling constraint, which is one reason advanced UT is gaining ground.

PAUT and TOFD. For experienced UT technicians: focal laws, encoded scans, corrosion mapping, data review and flaw sizing. Norfolk's emerging offshore wind supply chain and heavy port fabrication are likely users of these skills.

ET. Covers impedance-plane interpretation, bobbin and surface probes and calibration, steered to tubing or surface work depending on the cohort.

Where NDT technicians work in Norfolk

Navy ship repair. Private yards and contractors along the Elizabeth River, including BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Marine Hydraulics International, Colonna's Shipyard and General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk, perform maintenance and modernisation on Navy surface ships. Navy repair contractors are typically qualified under NAVSEA's Master Ship Repair Agreement or Agreement for Boat Repair, and their inspection work references NAVSEA technical publications such as T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 for NDT and MIL-STD-2035 for acceptance criteria. The public shipyard. Bridges and tunnels. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the region's many moveable and fixed bridges need structural steel inspection, typically to AWS D1.5 for bridge welding and VDOT specifications.

Aviation and industry. Naval air stations in the region support aircraft maintenance, which usually follows NAS 410 or military requirements, a separate scheme. Manufacturing, rail equipment and industrial plants around Chesapeake and Suffolk commonly certify under SNT-TC-1A.

Radiography licensing in Virginia. Virginia has been an NRC Agreement State since March 31, 2009. The Virginia Department of Health's Office of Radiological Health licenses radioactive materials, including industrial radiography sources, under the Virginia Radiation Protection Regulations (12VAC5-481). Radiographer training and certification must meet those regulations and the company's licence conditions, and out-of-state firms use Virginia's reciprocity process. This is separate from SNT-TC-1A RT certification: a Norfolk radiographer usually needs both.

Practise before the practical exam

The Practical NDT 3D simulator offers 12 method families in 12 workplaces, including an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. Norfolk repair trainees get most from the welding workshop and storage tank scenes, which are closest to plate, weld and thickness work. It helps trainees rehearse setups, coverage and interpretation between classes.
