UT training covers sound propagation, probe selection, calibration on standard and job-specific blocks, DAC and TCG, angle-beam scanning of butt, fillet and nozzle welds, and flaw evaluation. For Philadelphia we add emphasis on thick-section structural welds, because bridge and shipyard work reward it. PAUT and TOFD cover focal laws, scan plans, encoded data collection and analysis for technicians already confident in conventional UT. SNT-TC-1A certification path in Philadelphia, step by step
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware do not license NDT technicians by method. Your employer certifies you, following a sequence that is identical whether you work for a refinery contractor in Delaware County or a fabricator in Northeast Philadelphia.
- Employer written practice. The company's document defines training hours, experience hours, exams, passing grades, vision requirements, recertification periods and the responsible Level III.
- Classroom training. You complete the formal training the practice requires for the method and level, live online, in an arranged cohort, or onsite. Recommended minimums are summarised in our training requirements matrix.
- On-the-job experience. Supervised, documented hours in the method, working with certified personnel on real jobs.
- General exam. Written questions on the principles of the method.
- Specific exam. Written questions on your employer's procedures, equipment, codes and acceptance criteria, such as ASME Section V and VIII, B31.3, AWS D1.1 or AWS D1.5.
- Practical exam. Hands-on examination of specimens with known discontinuities, graded against a checklist. A Level III administers and grades all three exams.
- Vision test. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast, repeated annually.
- Certification. Issued by the employer, signed by the responsible Level III, and kept on file for audit.
- Recertification. On the interval in the written practice, by re-examination or documented continued performance as the practice allows. A new employer recertifies you under its own practice.

Where NDT technicians work in Philadelphia
Refining and fuel logistics. The large refinery complex in South Philadelphia closed after its 2019 fire, and the site is being redeveloped as a logistics and life-sciences district, but refining did not leave the Delaware Valley. Refineries across the river in Paulsboro, New Jersey, and in Delaware City, along with the Trainer refinery and terminals at Marcus Hook, keep mechanical-integrity work flowing. That work relies on UT thickness, PAUT corrosion mapping, RT of piping welds and ET of exchanger bundles, referenced to ASME Section V, B31.3 and owner-user inspection programmes.
Nuclear power. Limerick Generating Station in Montgomery County and Peach Bottom in York County, plus the Salem and Hope Creek stations across the river in New Jersey, create steady demand for UT, PAUT, VT and ET during outages. In-service inspection follows ASME Section XI, which points to CP-189 for personnel qualification, and suppliers work under 10 CFR 50 Appendix B quality programmes. The NRC's Region I office is in King of Prussia.
Shipbuilding and Navy engineering. Hanwha Philly Shipyard at the Navy Yard builds large commercial vessels, and the Navy Yard also hosts the Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division and the Navy's propeller foundry. Weld inspection on hull blocks, MT on structural details and UT on thick plate are the entry points.
Aerospace and manufacturing. Boeing's Ridley Park rotorcraft plant and its supply chain bring aerospace NDT, which is usually certified to NAS 410 rather than SNT-TC-1A. We are honest that we do not train to NAS 410; SNT-TC-1A training still builds method knowledge, but aerospace employers will certify you under their own scheme.
Pharmaceutical and life sciences. Southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey host major drug and biologics manufacturing, where stainless sanitary piping is built to ASME BPE and inspected visually and by borescope, with PT on accessible welds.
Bridges, rail and utilities. The Delaware River bridges, Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, SEPTA infrastructure and PennDOT's bridge inventory all need weld and structure inspection; bridge steel welding is governed by AWS D1.5. Philadelphia Gas Works, the largest municipally owned gas utility in the US, operates pipelines and an LNG facility; pipeline welding references API 1104.
Radiography licensing across three states. Pennsylvania is an NRC Agreement State, so radioactive-source radiography is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Radiation Protection. New Jersey is also an Agreement State, regulated by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. Delaware is not an Agreement State, so radioactive materials licensing there is handled by the NRC from its Region I office. Radiographers must meet the radiation safety training and certification rules of whichever jurisdiction the job falls under, in addition to SNT-TC-1A certification in RT. Our RT courses teach the method; they do not replace those radiation safety requirements.
What local employers ask for. Documented Level II in UT, MT or PT, clean annual vision records, experience with the specific code your contract names, and, for nuclear work, CP-189-compliant records.
