SNT-TC-1A certification path in Newark, step by step

SNT-TC-1A is employer-based. A training course, a college or the state does not certify you. Your employer does, under its written practice. This is the sequence a Newark technician goes through:

1. The employer's written practice. Your employer documents how it trains, examines and certifies personnel in each method and level. If you need one, start with written-practice development.
2. Formal training hours. Classroom or live-online instruction at the hours the written practice sets. Atlantis delivers this part. Minimums by method are in the requirements matrix.
3. On-the-job experience. Supervised experience in the method, logged and signed, on your employer's work.
4. General, specific and practical examinations. Given by a Level III or designated examiner under the written practice. The practical is done on real specimens with real equipment.
5. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast, at least annually as the written practice requires.
6. Certification by the employer. The employer signs, backed by the Level III's records.
7. Recertification. At the written-practice interval, by evidence of continued satisfactory work or re-examination.

Newark contractors often move technicians between owners and between contractors. Certification does not travel automatically. Where NDT technicians work in Newark

• Aviation. Newark Liberty International Airport supports airline maintenance and component work, where NDT follows the aircraft manufacturer's NDT manuals and the airline's FAA-approved programme. Many aviation employers certify to NAS 410 rather than SNT-TC-1A. Atlantis does not offer NAS 410 training. We mention it only so you know what aviation employers may ask for.
• Pharmaceutical and specialty chemical plants. Central and northern New Jersey hosts a large pharmaceutical manufacturing base. Stainless process piping, vessels and clean utilities need PT, VT and UT, often to ASME BPE.

Radiation licensing and TWIC in New Jersey

New Jersey became an NRC Agreement State on 30 September 2009. Industrial radiography with sealed sources is licensed and inspected by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection under N.J.A.C. 7:28, which includes a subchapter on licences and radiation-safety requirements for industrial radiography. X-ray equipment registration also falls under NJDEP's radiation protection rules. A radiography company working in New Jersey needs the right state licence or reciprocity, and its radiographers must meet the radiation-safety training and certification rules, usually including certification from a recognised independent radiographer certification programme. That is separate from your SNT-TC-1A RT certification, which covers technique and interpretation. Our RT courses teach the method and do not replace the state's radiation-safety requirements. Confirm current rules with NJDEP before mobilising.

Refinery docks, bulk terminals and Port Newark–Elizabeth are facilities regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act. Unescorted access to their secure areas requires a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) from the TSA. Refinery owners usually add their own site safety orientation and contractor qualification. For many Newark jobs, TWIC is as much a hiring requirement as Level II certification, so apply early.

Method spotlight: PAUT and TOFD for turnaround weld examination

The method that most changes a Newark technician's job prospects is phased array UT, ideally with TOFD alongside it. Turnaround schedules are tight, and radiography clears the area around the shot, which stops other trades from working.
