NDT Training and Certification in Tennessee
Tennessee technicians and employers can get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III NDT training from Atlantis NDT live online, in live-virtual cohorts, or onsite at their own plant, shop or site. Every course is led by an ASNT NDT Level III and mapped to the employer's written practice, so training counts toward certification. Methods: UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation.
Tennessee has one of the most nuclear-heavy NDT markets in the country. The Tennessee Valley Authority is headquartered in Knoxville and runs nuclear, hydro and fossil plants across the state; Oak Ridge has been a centre of nuclear work since the 1940s; and new advanced-reactor projects are under way there now. Add a refinery and a global air-cargo hub in Memphis, a large chemical complex in Kingsport, aerospace test facilities in Middle Tennessee, a fast-growing automotive and battery industry, and major river, rail and Interstate bridges, and the result is steady demand for qualified technicians in almost every method. This page maps that work by region and explains how certification and Tennessee's regulators fit together. Request a Tennessee training quote if you already know what you need.
Where NDT technicians work in Tennessee
Tennessee NDT work falls into four regions: East Tennessee's nuclear, federal-research and chemical complex (Knoxville, Oak Ridge, Chattanooga, Kingsport); Middle Tennessee's automotive, aerospace-test and construction economy (Nashville, Smyrna, Spring Hill, Tullahoma, Clarksville); West Tennessee's refinery, logistics and new automotive work (Memphis, Stanton); and TVA power and river infrastructure statewide.
East Tennessee: Oak Ridge and Knoxville
Oak Ridge is home to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Y-12 National Security Complex and the former K-25 site, now the East Tennessee Technology Park. It is also becoming a centre for advanced nuclear: Kairos Power is building its Hermes demonstration reactor in Oak Ridge, and TVA has pursued a small modular reactor at its Clinch River site. That work involves high-integrity fabrication, nuclear-grade quality programmes and inspection under ASME Section III and related requirements, with heavy use of UT, RT, PT and VT. Knoxville hosts TVA's headquarters and a regional base of engineering and inspection contractors. See NDT training in Oak Ridge and nuclear NDT training in Oak Ridge.
Chattanooga and the southeast corner
TVA's Sequoyah nuclear plant at Soddy-Daisy and Watts Bar nuclear plant near Spring City both sit within an hour of Chattanooga, and Watts Bar Unit 2 was the first new US commercial reactor to enter service in the 21st century. Their refuelling outages draw ASME Section XI in-service inspection crews for UT, PAUT, ET and VT. Chattanooga also has a long heavy-manufacturing history, including boiler and pressure-vessel fabrication and foundries, plus the Volkswagen assembly plant and its suppliers.
Northeast Tennessee: Kingsport and the Tri-Cities
Eastman Chemical Company's Kingsport site is one of the largest chemical manufacturing complexes in the eastern United States, with miles of process piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and boilers. Plant inspection there involves UT thickness and corrosion monitoring, RT and PAUT on piping welds, ET on exchanger tubing and VT and PT across maintenance work. In Erwin, Nuclear Fuel Services manufactures nuclear fuel for the US Navy.
Middle Tennessee: Nashville, Smyrna, Spring Hill, Tullahoma and Clarksville
Nashville's construction boom keeps structural steel fabricators busy with VT, MT and UT under AWS D1.1. Nissan's Smyrna plant, General Motors at Spring Hill and their suppliers bring automotive weld, casting and battery-manufacturing inspection. In Tullahoma, Arnold Air Force Base hosts the Arnold Engineering Development Complex, whose wind tunnels and engine test cells involve large pressure systems and precision aerospace hardware. Clarksville, next to Fort Campbell, adds Army aviation maintenance and growing manufacturing. See NDT training in Nashville.
West Tennessee: Memphis and the Mississippi
Memphis has the Valero Memphis refinery, petroleum terminals on Presidents Island, the FedEx World Hub with its large aircraft maintenance operation, and river-port industry along the Mississippi. Refinery turnarounds drive UT, RT, PAUT and VT demand, and aircraft maintenance drives ET, PT and UT. Ford's BlueOval City at Stanton, northeast of Memphis, is a major new automotive and battery manufacturing site. The 2021 discovery of a fractured tie girder on the Interstate 40 Hernando de Soto Bridge over the Mississippi is a well-known example of why bridge inspection matters, and it is still taught as a lesson in fracture-critical inspection.
TVA power, dams and pipelines statewide
Beyond nuclear, TVA operates gas, coal and hydroelectric generation across Tennessee, with boiler-tube, penstock, turbine and generator inspection on every outage. Interstate natural gas transmission lines and product pipelines cross the state, and gas distribution utilities run constant replacement programmes, all needing weld and integrity inspection.
ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Tennessee employers
Atlantis NDT runs ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and II courses in eight methods plus Level III preparation. Tennessee nuclear and power employers rely on UT, PAUT, ET, RT and VT; chemical and refinery plants on UT, RT and PAUT; aircraft maintenance on ET and PT; fabrication, automotive and bridges on MT, UT and VT.
| Method | Levels | What Tennessee employers use it for | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) | I, II, III prep | Nuclear outages at Sequoyah and Watts Bar, corrosion surveys in Kingsport and Memphis, structural welds in Nashville, bridges statewide | None for Level I; Level I plus experience for Level II, per written practice |
| Phased Array UT (PAUT) | I, II | Nuclear and power piping welds, refinery turnarounds, heavy nuclear-component fabrication in Oak Ridge | Usually UT Level II first |
| Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) | I, II | Thick-wall vessels and piping welds, flaw sizing in power and chemical plants | Usually UT Level II first |
| Radiographic Testing (RT) | I, II | Piping and pipeline welds, nuclear-grade fabrication, castings | Plus TDEC radiation safety and radiographer requirements |
| Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) | I, II | Structural steel in Nashville, automotive parts, bridges, castings and forgings | None for Level I |
| Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) | I, II | Aircraft parts at Memphis and Clarksville, stainless nuclear and chemical piping, non-magnetic welds | None for Level I |
| Visual Testing (VT) | I, II | Every weld shop, nuclear outage walkdowns, bridges, chemical-plant maintenance | None for Level I |
| Eddy Current Testing (ET) | I, II | Steam generator and heat-exchanger tubing, aircraft maintenance at the Memphis cargo hub | None for Level I |
Level III candidates can use our ASNT Level III training. SNT-TC-1A recommended training hours and experience by method and level are listed in the training requirements matrix; the employer's written practice sets the final figures, so we do not quote hours here.

Nashville. A booming construction market means steady demand for VT, MT and UT on structural steel and bridges, plus automotive supplier work in the surrounding counties. The Nashville page and Practical NDT Nashville page go deeper.
Oak Ridge. Nuclear-grade quality expectations, traceability and strict procedure control. UT, RT, PT and VT at Level II are common, and Level III oversight is often a customer requirement.
Memphis. Refinery turnarounds and aircraft maintenance are the two big engines. Technicians with UT and RT on one side, or ET and PT on the other, are in steady demand.
Knoxville. TVA's home base supports a network of engineering and inspection contractors who staff outages across the Valley, which favours UT, ET and VT.
Chattanooga. Sequoyah and Watts Bar outages plus heavy fabrication and automotive manufacturing give a mixed market.
Kingsport and the Tri-Cities. Chemical plant maintenance and capital projects need UT, RT, PAUT and ET, often scheduled around planned unit shutdowns.
Neighbouring hubs: NDT training across the Southeast, Appalachia, Huntsville for North Alabama crews, and Lexington for Kentucky.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in Tennessee, step by step
Tennessee does not license NDT technicians. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A your employer certifies you after you complete method training, gain documented experience, pass general, specific and practical exams administered under a Level III, and pass a vision test.
- Written practice. The employer's written practice sets levels, training, experience, exams and recertification for each method.
- Classroom training in the method, online, live-virtual or onsite. See the training requirements matrix for SNT-TC-1A recommended minimums.
- On-the-job experience, supervised and documented: piping UT in Kingsport, structural MT in Nashville, ET at a Memphis hangar.
- General exam on method principles.
- Specific exam on your employer's procedures, equipment and codes, such as ASME Section V, ASME Section XI or AWS D1.1.
- Practical exam on real specimens, graded by a Level III.
- Vision test, near-vision and colour contrast, annually.
- Certification issued and documented by the employer.
- Recertification at the interval the written practice sets.
Nuclear owners and federal-site contractors may add site-specific qualification, and some nuclear UT exams also require performance demonstration under ASME Section XI Appendix VIII. Those are layers on top of a solid SNT-TC-1A foundation. See SNT-TC-1A training and certification.
Radiography licensing and other Tennessee requirements
Tennessee is an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography with radioactive materials is licensed and inspected by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) Division of Radiological Health, under state rules that follow the federal industrial radiography model in 10 CFR Part 34. Industrial x-ray equipment is registered with the same division.
For RT technicians, that means two qualifications: SNT-TC-1A method certification under the employer's written practice, and radiation safety qualification as a radiographer or radiographer's assistant under the company's state licence, including radiation safety training, certification and supervision rules. Out-of-state licensees need reciprocity before working in Tennessee. Note that work at federal Department of Energy sites in Oak Ridge can fall under DOE radiation protection rules rather than the state licence, so confirm the applicable authority for each job and confirm current requirements with TDEC before work starts.
Boilers and pressure vessels. The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Boiler Unit, within its workplace regulations and compliance division, has jurisdiction over high-pressure and low-pressure boilers and unfired pressure vessels in commercial and industrial use. State and insurance inspectors hold National Board commissions, and repairs follow the National Board Inspection Code with NDT drawn from ASME Section V and the construction code. Chemical plants, power plants and manufacturers generate most of this work.
Pipelines. The Tennessee Public Utility Commission's Gas Pipeline Safety Division inspects intrastate gas transmission and all natural gas distribution systems in the state, including municipal systems and utility districts, under a PHMSA grant. PHMSA itself regulates interstate gas and hazardous-liquid pipelines. API 1104 governs most pipeline weld inspection.
Codes in local use (context only). ASME Section III and NQA-1 quality programmes on nuclear fabrication, ASME Section XI at Sequoyah and Watts Bar, ASME Section I, V and VIII and B31.1 and B31.3 at power and chemical plants, AWS D1.1 and D1.5 for structures and bridges, API 1104 for pipelines, and NAS 410 or customer-specific aerospace requirements for aviation work. Some Tennessee employers also ask for API inspector or AWS CWI credentials, which are separate schemes; Atlantis training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based.
Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Tennessee
Tennessee crews can take NDT theory live online, join a live-virtual cohort, or have a Level III-led course delivered onsite at their facility. Practical training and practical exams are performed on real specimens at the employer's site or another arrangement agreed in advance.
Tennessee stretches roughly 440 miles from Memphis to Bristol, across two time zones. Online theory lets a technician in Memphis and one in Kingsport attend the same live class without losing days to travel. Sessions are interactive, led by a Level III, and cover what the general and specific exams test. See NDT training online.
Onsite training suits plants, shops and hangars that want a group trained on their own parts, procedures and equipment. We schedule around Tennessee's work calendar: spring and fall refuelling outages at Sequoyah and Watts Bar, TVA fossil and hydro maintenance seasons, refinery turnarounds in Memphis, planned unit shutdowns in Kingsport, and automotive model-year changeovers. Multi-state employers can use corporate NDT training to keep records consistent. Ask about onsite training for your Tennessee crew.
For Tennessee employers: written practice and Level III services
Every Tennessee company that certifies NDT personnel under SNT-TC-1A needs a written practice and Level III oversight. Atlantis NDT writes and updates written practices, administers and grades exams, reviews procedures and acts as an outside Level III for companies without one in-house.
Tennessee's new manufacturing and nuclear projects are bringing in suppliers who must certify inspectors quickly: a fabricator qualifying for advanced-reactor work in Oak Ridge, a battery-plant supplier in West Tennessee adding NDT to its quality plan, or a Nashville steel erector whose customer now requires certified UT. Each needs a written practice that matches its methods, codes and customers. Our written practice development service builds it, and our SNT-TC-1A guide explains what auditors check.
Level III services include procedures and technique sheets, exam administration and grading, records review and audit preparation. For wider programme work see NDT consulting in Tennessee. Book a Level III consultation for your Tennessee company.
Practise before your practical exam
Practical NDT, Atlantis NDT's 3D simulator, lets trainees practise 12 methods in 5 environments: an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It is practice only and does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.
Tennessee trainees will find the environments familiar. The aircraft hangar mirrors aircraft maintenance at Memphis and Clarksville. The welding workshop mirrors Nashville's and Chattanooga's fabricators. The oil and gas site and storage tank match the Memphis refinery and terminals. Simulator time is not on-the-job experience and is not graded as a practical exam. Explore the Practical NDT simulator and the state page, Practical NDT for Tennessee.
Your instructor
Courses are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. As Level III he sets course content, written practices, exam questions and practical grading criteria, so what a Tennessee technician learns lines up with how that technician is examined and certified. Questions about methods, codes or your written practice can go through the contact form.
NDT training in Tennessee: frequently asked questions
How do I become NDT certified in Tennessee?
Most Tennessee NDT technicians are certified by their employer under ASNT SNT-TC-1A: classroom training in a method, documented experience, general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and a vision test. The employer then certifies you. Atlantis NDT provides training, exam support and the written practice if needed.
Is there NDT training online in Tennessee?
Yes. Atlantis NDT runs live online NDT theory that technicians can join from Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga or anywhere in the state. Practical training and the practical exam need real specimens, arranged onsite at your employer or through an agreed arrangement.
Do I need a license to do radiography in Tennessee?
Your company needs a radioactive materials licence or x-ray registration from TDEC's Division of Radiological Health, and radiographers must meet state radiation safety training and certification rules. That is separate from SNT-TC-1A RT certification. Work at federal sites may follow DOE rules instead. Confirm current requirements before starting.
How much does NDT training cost in Tennessee?
Quote on request. Cost depends on method, level, number of trainees, online or onsite delivery, and whether you need written-practice or exam services. Send your details for a quote within one business day.
Which NDT method is most in demand in Tennessee?
UT leads, driven by nuclear, power, chemical and refinery work. ET is in demand for tubing and aircraft maintenance, RT and PAUT for piping and nuclear fabrication, and MT and VT for structural steel and automotive.
Can you train our crew onsite in Memphis, Nashville or Knoxville?
Yes. Onsite delivery is available at your facility anywhere in Tennessee, scheduled around outages, turnarounds and production. Atlantis NDT has no physical training centre in Tennessee; onsite means at your site.
Is SNT-TC-1A recognised by Tennessee employers?
Yes. SNT-TC-1A is the main employer-based NDT certification framework in the United States and is referenced by ASME and AWS codes. Nuclear and aerospace customers may add requirements that your written practice should cover.
How long does UT Level II take?
It depends on your employer's written practice. SNT-TC-1A recommended minimum hours and experience are on the training requirements matrix. Logging experience usually takes longer than the classroom part.
How do I get into nuclear NDT work in Tennessee?
Start with a solid SNT-TC-1A Level II in UT, ET or VT with an outage contractor, then add site-specific training and, for some UT tasks, performance demonstration qualification. See nuclear NDT training in Oak Ridge.
Can I start NDT training with no experience?
Yes. Level I has no experience prerequisite. Many Tennessee technicians start as helpers or trainees and build documented experience toward Level II.
Can I prepare for ASNT Level III from Tennessee?
Yes. ASNT Level III training runs live online. Level II candidates can also use the UT Level 2 practice questions.
What do NDT technicians earn in Tennessee?
Pay varies by method, level, sector and outage travel. See the NDT Level 2 salary and NDT Level 3 salary guides for published ranges.
