NDT Training and Certification in New Jersey

New Jersey technicians and employers can get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III NDT training from Atlantis NDT live online, in scheduled live-virtual cohorts, or onsite at their own refinery, plant, shop or terminal. Every course is led by an ASNT NDT Level III and built around the employer's written practice, so the hours count toward certification. Methods: UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation.

New Jersey packs a remarkable amount of inspection work into a small state. Two large refineries, the busiest container port on the East Coast, three nuclear reactors on one island in the Delaware, a dense web of gas transmission and distribution lines, pharmaceutical plants full of stainless process piping, military research and munitions installations, and some of the most heavily travelled bridges in the country all need qualified NDT people. This page maps that work region by region and explains how certification, radiography licensing and pressure-equipment rules work in New Jersey. Where NDT technicians work in New Jersey

New Jersey NDT work concentrates in the northern port-and-refinery corridor (Newark, Elizabeth, Linden, Bayonne, Perth Amboy), the central pharmaceutical and manufacturing belt along Route 1 and the Turnpike, the South Jersey Delaware River industrial strip (Camden, Paulsboro, Salem County), and statewide gas, bridge and military infrastructure.

North Jersey: Newark, Elizabeth, Linden and the Kill Van Kull

Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, the Bayonne and Elizabeth terminals and the tank farms along the Arthur Kill form one of the densest petroleum and cargo logistics zones in the country. The Phillips 66 Bayway refinery in Linden anchors the area, surrounded by product terminals in Linden, Carteret, Sewaren and Perth Amboy. Typical work: UT thickness and corrosion mapping on piping and tanks, VT and MT on structural and crane welds, RT and PAUT on process piping during turnarounds, and storage-tank inspection where the NDT technician supports the owner's certified tank inspector. Newark Liberty International Airport adds aviation maintenance work, mainly ET, PT and VT.

Central Jersey: pharma, manufacturing and power

From New Brunswick and Edison down through Princeton and the Route 1 corridor, pharmaceutical and specialty chemical manufacturing relies on stainless-steel process systems: orbital welds, sanitary tubing, reactors and pressure vessels. VT and PT dominate, with RT and UT on higher-pressure lines, and documentation discipline is as important as the method. The region also has gas-fired generating stations, fabrication shops and machine shops that serve the New York metro market.

South Jersey and the Delaware River

PBF Energy's Paulsboro refinery, the Paulsboro and Gibbstown marine terminals, chemical plants in Gloucester and Salem counties and the Camden waterfront form South Jersey's industrial strip. Further south on Artificial Island, PSEG operates the Salem and Hope Creek nuclear stations, which bring refuelling outage work under ASME Section XI. Camden is home to Holtec's manufacturing campus, which fabricates heavy nuclear components and spent-fuel storage systems, a demanding environment for UT, RT, MT, PT and VT on thick welds. In Ocean County, the former Oyster Creek station is being decommissioned.

Military and research installations

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst supports airlift and naval air engineering work, Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County develops armaments and munitions, and Naval Weapons Station Earle in Monmouth County handles ordnance logistics. Contractors supporting these sites often need technicians certified under an SNT-TC-1A written practice and familiar with defence documentation.

Bridges, transit and utilities

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Delaware River Port Authority, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and NJDOT all maintain long-span steel bridges, viaducts and tunnels that need fracture-critical inspection support with UT, MT and VT. Gas utilities and interstate transmission operators run pipelines across the state, with constant replacement and integrity work. Offshore-wind supply-chain projects on the Delaware River and the coast have also brought heavy fabrication work, although that pipeline of projects has changed with federal policy, so treat it as variable demand.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses for New Jersey employers

Atlantis NDT offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and II courses in eight methods, plus Level III preparation. New Jersey refinery and terminal employers usually need UT, RT, PAUT and VT; pharma and food plants need VT and PT; bridges and fabrication need MT, UT and VT; nuclear and heavy fabrication need all of them with tight documentation.

Newark. The port, the airport and the industrial suburbs around them create steady demand for VT, MT and UT on structures and cranes, ET and PT on aircraft, and UT thickness on terminal piping. Our Newark NDT training page covers that mix in detail, and the Practical NDT Newark page explains simulator access.

Linden, Elizabeth and Perth Amboy. Refinery and terminal work dominates. Turnaround windows drive hiring, and employers want UT, RT and PAUT technicians who already understand ASME B31.3 piping and API inspection documents as context. We schedule training before turnaround mobilisation so new technicians arrive ready.

Camden. Heavy fabrication for nuclear and power customers expects strict procedure control and traceable records. UT, RT, MT and PT at Level II are common requirements, and many employers need help keeping their written practice aligned with customer quality programmes.

Paulsboro and Salem County. Refinery turnarounds and nuclear refuelling outages are the two big demand spikes. Technicians who can work both, with UT, ET and VT, are valued.

Trenton and Central Jersey. Manufacturing, pharma and state infrastructure. VT and PT on stainless systems, MT and UT on bridges and structures.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in New Jersey, step by step

New Jersey does not issue NDT certificates. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A your employer certifies you after you complete method training, document on-the-job experience, pass general, specific and practical exams under a Level III and pass a vision test. The steps:

  1. Written practice. Your employer's written practice defines levels, training, experience, exams and recertification for each method. It must exist before anyone is certified.
  2. Classroom training. You complete the method training hours required, live online, live-virtual or onsite. See the training requirements matrix for SNT-TC-1A recommended minimums.
  3. On-the-job experience. Supervised, documented work in the method, for example UT thickness readings at a Bayonne terminal or PT on pharma tubing in Central Jersey.
  4. General exam on method principles.
  5. Specific exam on your employer's procedures, equipment and codes, such as ASME Section V, ASME B31.3 or AWS D1.5 for bridges.
  6. Practical exam on real specimens, graded by a Level III.
  7. Vision examination: near-vision acuity and colour contrast, annually.
  8. Certification by the employer, documented and filed.
  9. Recertification at the interval the written practice sets.

Because certification is employer-based, a technician who moves from a Linden contractor to a Camden fabricator is re-certified by the new employer, using the documented training and experience already earned. More detail on our SNT-TC-1A training and certification page.

Radiography licensing and other New Jersey requirements

New Jersey is an NRC Agreement State. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Radiation Protection Element licenses industrial radiography with radioactive sources, and its Bureau of X-Ray Compliance registers and inspects industrial x-ray equipment. Radiographers must meet state radiation safety training and certification rules on top of SNT-TC-1A method certification.

New Jersey's radiation rules for industrial radiography follow the federal model in 10 CFR Part 34: a licensed company, a radiation safety officer, trained and certified radiographers, supervised radiographer's assistants, personnel monitoring, and survey and leak-test requirements. Industrial x-ray machines, including cabinet and field units, are registered with the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance. Companies licensed in another state that send crews into New Jersey normally need reciprocity approval before starting work. Because the state's rule details can change, confirm the current licensing and radiographer requirements directly with NJDEP before work begins.

Boilers and pressure vessels. The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development's bureau for boiler and pressure vessel compliance, which dates back to 1913, inspects and certifies boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration systems under the state's Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Law. Inspectors hold National Board commissions, and repairs and alterations follow the National Board Inspection Code, with NDT requirements drawn from ASME Section V and the construction code.

Pipelines. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities oversees intrastate gas pipeline safety, and PHMSA regulates interstate gas and hazardous-liquid lines. Weld inspection on transmission work usually follows API 1104, and operator qualification rules cover many tasks performed on regulated lines.

Codes in local use (context only). ASME Section V and VIII, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, API 1104, AWS D1.1 and D1.5 for bridges, ASME Section XI and plant-specific programmes at Salem and Hope Creek, and ASME BPE practice in pharmaceutical plants. Refinery owners and terminals also follow API inspection codes, and some local employers ask for API inspector or AWS CWI credentials for supervisory roles. Those are separate schemes that Atlantis does not train for; our training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT method training.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across New Jersey

New Jersey technicians can take NDT theory live online, join a live-virtual cohort, or have a Level III-led course delivered onsite at the employer's facility. Practical training and practical exams are done on real specimens at the employer's site or another arrangement agreed in advance.

New Jersey's traffic makes online theory especially practical. A technician in Bayonne should not spend two hours on the Turnpike each way for classroom sessions that can be delivered interactively online. Our online NDT training uses live instruction with a Level III, not just recorded videos, and covers the knowledge that the general and specific exams test.

Onsite courses make sense for refineries, terminals, fabricators and pharma plants that want a group trained on their own equipment, procedures and parts. We time onsite programmes around the calendar that drives New Jersey work: spring and fall refinery turnarounds in Linden and Paulsboro, refuelling outages at Salem and Hope Creek, pharma plant shutdown weeks, and the summer construction season for bridges and gas main replacement. For companies with crews in several states, corporate NDT training keeps records consistent across sites. Ask about onsite training for your New Jersey crew.

For New Jersey employers: written practice and Level III services

Any New Jersey company that certifies NDT personnel under SNT-TC-1A needs a written practice and Level III oversight. Atlantis NDT writes and updates written practices, administers and grades exams, reviews procedures and acts as an outside Level III for companies without one in-house.

New Jersey has many small and mid-size NDT employers: inspection contractors serving the refinery corridor, fabricators supplying New York construction, and manufacturers whose customers suddenly require certified inspectors. These firms often lose their Level III to retirement or competition, or find during an audit that their written practice no longer matches what they do. Our written practice development service fixes that, and the SNT-TC-1A certification guide explains what auditors and customers check.

Level III services include procedure and technique writing, exam administration and grading, record review, and audit preparation for owner-user, prime-contractor and registrar audits. Practise before your practical exam

Practical NDT, Atlantis NDT's 3D simulator, lets trainees practise 12 methods in 5 environments: an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It is practice only. It does not replace the practical exam on real specimens or count as on-the-job experience.

New Jersey trainees will recognise the scenes. The storage tank and oil and gas site match the tank farms and refineries of Linden, Bayonne and Paulsboro. The welding workshop matches the fabrication shops of Camden and North Jersey. The aircraft hangar matches maintenance work at Newark and the joint base. Practising scan patterns and set-ups in the simulator between classes means trainees walk into the practical exam knowing what to expect. See the Practical NDT simulator and the Newark and Trenton pages.

Your instructor

Courses are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. As the Level III behind the programme, he sets course content, written practices, exam questions and practical grading criteria, so what a New Jersey technician learns lines up with how that technician is examined and certified. Questions about a method, a code requirement or your written practice can be sent through the contact form.

NDT training in New Jersey: frequently asked questions

How do I become NDT certified in New Jersey?

Most New Jersey NDT technicians are certified by their employer under ASNT SNT-TC-1A. You take classroom training in a method, log documented experience, pass general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, and pass a vision test. Your employer then certifies you. Atlantis NDT provides the training and exam support, and can write the employer's written practice.

Is there NDT training online in New Jersey?

Yes. Atlantis NDT delivers live online NDT theory that New Jersey technicians can join from anywhere in the state. Hands-on practical training and the practical exam still need real specimens, arranged onsite at your employer or through an agreed arrangement.

Do I need a license to do radiography in New Jersey?

Your company needs an NJDEP radioactive materials licence for source radiography, or registration of its x-ray equipment with the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance. Individual radiographers must meet state radiation safety training and certification rules, and assistants work under supervision. That is separate from SNT-TC-1A RT method certification. Confirm current requirements with NJDEP.

How much does NDT training cost in New Jersey?

Quote on request. Cost depends on method, level, number of trainees, online versus onsite delivery, and whether you also need written-practice or exam services. Send your crew size and methods and you will receive a quote within one business day.

Which NDT method is most in demand in New Jersey?

UT is the most widely used, from refinery corrosion surveys to bridge welds. VT and PT are essential in pharmaceutical and chemical plants, RT and PAUT in refinery turnarounds and heavy fabrication, and MT on bridges and structural steel.

Can you train our crew onsite in Linden, Camden or Newark?

Yes. Onsite delivery at your facility anywhere in New Jersey is available, scheduled around turnarounds, outages and production. Atlantis NDT has no physical training centre in New Jersey; onsite means at your site.

Is SNT-TC-1A recognised by New Jersey employers?

Yes. SNT-TC-1A is the main employer-based NDT certification framework in the US and is referenced by ASME and AWS codes used across New Jersey industry. Nuclear and aerospace customers may add extra requirements that your written practice should cover.

How long does it take to reach Level II in New Jersey?

It depends on your employer's written practice. SNT-TC-1A recommends minimum training hours and experience by method and level, listed on our training requirements matrix. Experience usually takes longer than classroom training.

Can I work in New York or Pennsylvania with a New Jersey employer's certification?

Yes, SNT-TC-1A certification is not tied to a state, so you can work wherever your employer sends you. Radiography is the exception: radiation licensing and reciprocity rules apply state by state.

Do I need prior experience to start NDT training in New Jersey?

No experience is needed for Level I. Level II requires Level I training and documented experience, as set by the written practice. Many New Jersey technicians start as helpers or radiographer's assistants and train up from there.

Can I prepare for ASNT Level III from New Jersey?

Yes. Our ASNT Level III training runs live online. For Level II candidates, practice material such as the UT Level 2 practice questions helps with exam readiness.

What do NDT technicians earn in New Jersey?

Pay depends on method, level, sector, travel and overtime. Our NDT Level 2 salary and NDT inspector salary guides cover published ranges.
