NDT Inspector Salary in 2026: What Certified Inspectors Earn in the US

Certified NDT inspectors in the United States earn a median of roughly $65,000–$90,000 in 2026, with the full working range running from about $42,000 at entry to $185,000 for Level III managers and API-stacked senior inspectors. Published averages for this role vary more than for almost any comparable trade, because the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports NDT inspectors inside the much broader 'Quality Control Inspectors' category while salary aggregators sample self-reported data weighted toward entry-level roles. Neither number describes a working certified inspector well, which is why the table below is broken out by certification and industry instead.

What moves the number

Why the published averages disagree

The BLS occupational category that contains NDT also contains a large population of general quality inspectors in light manufacturing, which pulls the reported median down. Salary aggregators have the opposite bias in a different direction: they oversample people early in their careers who are actively job-hunting and self-reporting. The practical answer is that neither figure is wrong about what it measures, and neither measures a certified NDT inspector specifically. Read the certification-level bands instead.

Certification level is the primary determinant

Pay follows certification authority almost linearly. Level I performs to instruction, Level II interprets and reports, Level III approves procedures and qualifies people. Each step changes what you are permitted to sign for, and that permission is what employers are actually paying for. Job titles vary between companies; certification level does not.

API certifications create a separate track

API 510, 570 and 653 are code inspector certifications rather than NDT method certifications, and they qualify holders for Authorized Inspector roles in pressure vessels, piping and storage tanks respectively. Inspectors holding both an NDT level and an API certification occupy a narrow, well-paid segment because relatively few people hold both.

Industry premium is real and persistent

Aerospace and nuclear pay above general industry for equivalent credentials, because their documentation regimes restrict who is eligible. Oil and gas pays comparably at the top but varies with the capital cycle. General manufacturing pays least. These differences have been stable across cycles and are not a temporary artefact of any one year's demand.

Identify which track you are on

There are two distinct advancement routes and they reward different work. The method track runs Level I to II to III and is about examination authority. The code track runs through API certifications and is about inspection authority over equipment. Many senior inspectors hold both, but they are separate examinations with separate preparation, and it is worth being deliberate about which one your current work supports.

Advanced methods are the reliable mid-career move

For inspectors already at Level II, phased array is the most consistently valuable addition — it is specified on more work each year while the proportion of technicians qualified in it remains small. The premium has held for long enough to be structural rather than cyclical.

Document everything, continuously

Every subsequent certification step depends on verifiable experience records. Inspectors who maintain their own contemporaneous log — methods, hours, equipment, supervising Level III — progress faster than equally experienced colleagues who have to reconstruct it. This is the single cheapest career investment available in this field.

Questions people ask about this pay band

How much do NDT inspectors make?

Certified NDT inspectors in the US typically earn $65,000–$90,000 as a working median in 2026, ranging from about $42,000 at entry to $185,000 for inspection managers. Certification level is the primary determinant, followed by method and industry.

Why do NDT salary figures vary so much online?

Because the two most-cited sources measure different populations. BLS reports NDT inside the broad 'Quality Control Inspectors' occupational category, which includes many general manufacturing inspectors and pulls the median down. Salary aggregators rely on self-reported data weighted toward early-career job seekers. Neither isolates certified NDT inspectors, which is why certification-level bands are more useful than any single average.

What certification pays the most in NDT?

ASNT Level III combined with an API inspector certification is the highest-paying common combination, because it carries both examination authority and code inspection authority. Among method certifications alone, phased array ultrasonics carries the largest and most persistent premium at Level II.

Do NDT inspectors need a degree?

No. Certification under SNT-TC-1A and ISO 9712 is based on documented training, experience and examination rather than academic qualification. A degree can reduce required experience hours under some schemes and helps in management tracks, but many senior inspectors and Level IIIs entered without one.

Is NDT inspection a stable career?

It is relatively stable because inspection is non-discretionary in regulated industries — it is mandated by code rather than chosen, so it continues through downturns in a way that discretionary capital work does not. Demand also has a demographic tailwind, since a large share of experienced Level II and III inspectors are approaching retirement.

Turning a pay band into a plan

Every band on this page is an output of certification decisions. The route between them runs through documented training hours, examination and on-the-job experience under a qualified Level III — see ASNT certification requirements by level and training hours by method for what each step demands. Employers building a cohort rather than an individual should start at employer-sponsored NDT training.
