Delaware is small, but its NDT market is not. The state sits in the middle of the Delaware Valley industrial corridor, where refineries, chemical plants, power stations, a busy river port and major bridges are strung along both banks of the Delaware River from Philadelphia to the bay. Many Delaware-based technicians work across state lines in a single month, in New Castle County one week, in southeastern Pennsylvania or South Jersey the next. That makes a portable, well-documented SNT-TC-1A programme especially valuable here.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses available in Delaware

Ultrasonic Testing. The UT course builds from the physics of sound in steel to calibration, thickness measurement and angle-beam weld examination. Delaware refinery and chemical work means a lot of corrosion monitoring on piping circuits, so we cover measurement repeatability, high-temperature readings, coatings and how poor data leads to wrong remaining-life calculations. Level II adds indication evaluation and procedure writing.

Phased Array and TOFD. For UT Level II technicians, PAUT and TOFD courses cover probe and wedge selection, focal laws, scan plans, encoded scanning, sizing and data review. Advanced UT is increasingly specified on the region's refinery and power work where owners want recorded, reviewable data rather than a pass/fail note.

Radiographic Testing. RT covers radiation physics, exposure and geometry, image quality indicators, film and digital techniques and weld interpretation. Because Delaware is not an NRC Agreement State, the radiation safety context is taught with federal NRC requirements in mind, which differs from what a technician trained in a neighbouring Agreement State such as Pennsylvania or New Jersey may have heard.

Magnetic Particle and Penetrant. MT covers yokes, prods, coils, continuous and residual techniques and fluorescent inspection; PT covers penetrant systems, removal methods, dwell and development and the effects of contamination. Chemical plants run a wide mix of alloys, so we spend time on when MT is not an option and why sulfur- and halogen-controlled penetrant materials matter on stainless and nickel alloys.

Visual Testing. VT covers direct and remote visual examination, lighting and access, weld and corrosion measurement and reporting. It is the usual first certification and remains central to bridge, port and plant inspection.

Eddy Current Testing. ET covers impedance-plane analysis, probe selection, frequency choice and calibration standards, with applications in exchanger tubing and in aircraft structure inspection.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Delaware, step by step

1. Employer written practice. Your employer's document sets the rules for every method and level, including training and experience minimums, exams, vision testing and recertification.
2. Classroom training. Completed and documented to those minimums; the figures by method and level are in our training requirements matrix.
3. On-the-job experience. Logged under supervision. For Delaware technicians who work across state lines, keep experience records by job and method so a future employer can verify them.
4. General exam on method principles.

Where NDT technicians work in Delaware

Refining and chemicals. The Delaware City refinery is a complex East Coast refinery and a major mechanical-integrity and turnaround employer. Specialty-chemical and materials companies headquartered or operating in the Wilmington and New Castle area add steady inspection work across a wide range of alloys. Across the river and up the corridor sit further refineries and chemical plants in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that Delaware inspection companies commonly serve.

Power and nuclear. Gas-fired generating stations operate around Wilmington, and the Salem and Hope Creek nuclear stations sit on Artificial Island on the New Jersey side of the river, directly across from Delaware. Nuclear owners apply ASME Section XI and their own qualification requirements in addition to SNT-TC-1A, so technicians targeting nuclear outage work should check the owner's programme.

Military aviation. Dover Air Force Base operates large strategic airlift aircraft. Military aircraft NDI is performed by trained Air Force personnel under the service's own technical orders, while contractors and suppliers supporting aviation maintenance work to their customers' qualification requirements, commonly NAS 410. We do not offer NAS 410 certification, but our ET, PT and UT method courses build the underlying knowledge.

Port and marine. The Port of Wilmington handles heavy cargo, and cranes, berths, barges and marine structures need MT, UT and VT on welded steel.

Bridges and transportation. The Delaware Memorial Bridge twin spans, managed by the Delaware River and Bay Authority, and DelDOT's state bridge inventory generate steel bridge inspection and fabrication NDT, typically to AWS bridge welding requirements.

Natural gas. Distribution and transmission operators serving the Delmarva Peninsula, including a Dover-headquartered energy company, need weld inspection for pipeline construction and repair under PHMSA rules and API 1104. The Delaware Public Service Commission oversees intrastate gas pipeline safety.

Industrial radiography in Delaware. Delaware is not an NRC Agreement State. The NRC, through its Region I office in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, licenses and inspects radioactive-material use in Delaware, including industrial radiography with isotope sources. Under 10 CFR Part 34, radiographers using sealed sources must be certified through an NRC-recognised certification programme, such as the ASNT Industrial Radiography Radiation Safety Personnel programme, or an Agreement State programme. X-ray equipment is registered with the state's Office of Radiation Control. Your SNT-TC-1A RT certificate proves NDT competence; it is separate from those radiation safety requirements.

Working the whole corridor. Because Delaware crews regularly cross into Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, the radiation rules they meet change with the job. Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland are Agreement States with their own radiation control programmes, while work on the Delaware side falls under the NRC for radioactive materials. A Delaware inspection company running isotope crews on both sides of the river therefore has to manage licensing, reciprocity notifications and radiographer certification carefully, and its technicians should understand why the paperwork differs from one site to the next. The same cross-border reality applies to NDT certification: because SNT-TC-1A certification belongs to the employer rather than the state, a technician certified by a Delaware company carries that certification to every site the company sends them, provided the customer accepts the employer's written practice.

What Delaware employers ask for. SNT-TC-1A Level II in the requested method, code experience (ASME, API 1104, AWS D1.1), site safety training, and TWIC for port work. Plant work often pairs technicians with API-certified inspectors. Level III services and written practices for Delaware NDT companies

Many Delaware inspection companies are small firms serving a few large plants. Their written practice is often inherited, out of date, or silent on PAUT and TOFD. When a refinery or utility audits them, gaps show up quickly. Atlantis offers:
