NDT Training and Certification in Pennsylvania

Short answer: Pennsylvania technicians and employers can get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III training from Atlantis NDT through live online classes, a private live-virtual cohort, or onsite delivery at the employer's mill, plant, depot, shipyard or shop anywhere in the Commonwealth. An ASNT NDT Level III leads each programme, practical exams are held on real specimens at your facility, and the employer certifies you under its own written practice.

Pennsylvania's NDT market is built on heavy industry rather than refining. It has four operating nuclear stations and a major nuclear supply chain, the Marcellus and Utica shale gas fields with the pipelines and processing that serve them, steelmaking in the Mon Valley, a large petrochemical plant on the Ohio River, defence depots and rotorcraft manufacturing, locomotive building in Erie, a Philadelphia shipyard and Navy engineering centre, and one of the largest and oldest bridge inventories in the country. This hub maps where Pennsylvania NDT technicians work, which methods each sector uses, what the Department of Environmental Protection expects from radiography crews, and how we train crews without anyone travelling to a training centre. Where NDT technicians work in Pennsylvania

Direct answer: Pennsylvania NDT work concentrates in Pittsburgh and the southwest (steel, petrochemicals, Marcellus gas, nuclear supply chain), the northeast and north-central gas fields, the Philadelphia and Delaware River region (shipbuilding, Navy engineering, refining, rotorcraft), central Pennsylvania (defence depots, manufacturing, nuclear plants), and Erie (locomotives and fabrication). Nuclear and steel shape demand more here than in most states.

Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh region still makes steel: the Mon Valley Works, including the Clairton coke plant and the Edgar Thomson works in Braddock, keeps maintenance and fabrication NDT busy. Downriver in Beaver County, the Shell Polymers Monaca ethane cracker is one of the largest petrochemical plants built in the Northeast in decades, and Beaver Valley nuclear station sits nearby at Shippingport. Westinghouse, headquartered in Cranberry Township, anchors a nuclear engineering and component supply chain across the region. Washington and Greene counties are core Marcellus gas country, with gathering pipelines, compressor stations and processing plants. That mix creates demand for UT on heavy sections and welds, MT on structural and rotating equipment, RT on pipelines and process piping, ET for heat exchangers and condensers, and VT throughout. Pittsburgh's many river bridges add steel-bridge inspection; the 2022 collapse of the Fern Hollow Bridge in the city focused statewide attention on bridge condition.

Northeast and north-central Pennsylvania: the Marcellus gas fields

Susquehanna, Bradford, Tioga and Lycoming counties are among the most productive natural-gas areas in the country. Gathering systems, compressor stations, metering facilities and transmission pipelines generate steady pipeline weld radiography to API 1104, UT on station piping, and VT and MT on fabricated skids. Williamsport and the Wyoming Valley host service companies and fabrication shops supporting the field. Susquehanna nuclear station near Berwick adds outage work.

Philadelphia, the Delaware River and southeastern Pennsylvania

Philadelphia's shipyard builds commercial ships, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division at the former Navy Yard is a centre for ship machinery engineering and testing. Boeing's Ridley Park site builds military rotorcraft. Along the river, the Trainer refinery and the Marcus Hook industrial complex (an export terminal for natural gas liquids carried across the state by pipeline) need refinery-style mechanical integrity inspection. Limerick and Peach Bottom nuclear stations lie within reach of the city. Demand here combines aerospace methods (PT, ET, UT, MT), Navy and shipbuilding inspection, and refinery UT, RT and PAUT.

Central Pennsylvania: Harrisburg, York, Lancaster and the depots

Central Pennsylvania mixes defence and manufacturing. Letterkenny Army Depot near Chambersburg and Tobyhanna Army Depot in the Poconos maintain military equipment, BAE Systems builds combat vehicles in York, and manufacturing plants across Lancaster, York and Cumberland counties produce heavy equipment, vehicles and components. The former Three Mile Island Unit 1, renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center, is the subject of a restart effort, which would bring significant nuclear inspection work if it proceeds. Weld inspection on armour and structures (UT, MT, VT), castings and forgings (RT, UT, MT) and in-service inspection at the nuclear plants dominate.

Lehigh Valley, Scranton and Erie

The Lehigh Valley around Allentown and Bethlehem has heavy-truck manufacturing, fabrication shops and a large logistics sector, and Scranton has an Army ammunition plant and metalworking. In the northwest, Erie is home to Wabtec's locomotive manufacturing, plus foundries and fabrication shops. Rail and heavy manufacturing need UT, MT and PT on castings, forgings, welded frames and axles, while United Refining in Warren adds a small refinery.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Pennsylvania employers

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT delivers SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and II courses in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET for Pennsylvania employers, plus Level III exam preparation. Steel, rail and manufacturing lean on UT and MT; gas pipelines on RT; nuclear supply chain and plants on UT, PAUT, ET and PT; aerospace on PT and ET.

For more detail see UT Level 2, MT Level 2, RT Level 2 and ET Level 2. Companies that want an in-house Level III can use ASNT Level III training and the method exam prep pages such as Level III UT exam prep. Note that nuclear plants and their suppliers often apply additional qualification requirements on top of SNT-TC-1A or CP-189, such as ASME Section XI and plant-specific programmes, and in-service UT on certain components requires performance demonstration. We confirm the governing requirements before training nuclear personnel.

NDT training by city in Pennsylvania

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT has training pages for Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, regional pages for Appalachia, the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, and Practical NDT pages for other Pennsylvania cities. None is a physical training centre; each explains local demand and how we deliver online or onsite at your facility.

Philadelphia. Employers around Philadelphia include shipbuilders, Navy engineering contractors, rotorcraft suppliers, refinery and terminal operators, and fabrication shops in the surrounding counties. Requests usually combine UT, MT and VT for ship and structural work with PT and ET for aerospace and RT and PAUT for refinery piping. Navy-related work may follow NAVSEA personnel requirements, which we confirm at the start.

Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh employers want UT and MT for steel-mill and heavy fabrication, ET for power-plant tubing, PAUT and TOFD for nuclear supply-chain welds, and RT for gas pipelines in the surrounding counties. The region's large number of small fabricators and machine shops also creates demand for help writing a first written practice.

Harrisburg, York and Lancaster. Defence vehicle builders, depots and manufacturers need UT, MT and VT on welded structures, plus RT and UT on castings. Nuclear plants in the area bring outage-related ET, UT and VT needs.

Williamsport and the northern tier. Gas-field service companies need RT and UT technicians for gathering lines and station piping. Crews are spread over long distances in rural counties, so live online theory plus a short onsite practical block at the contractor's yard fits best.

Erie and the Lehigh Valley. Rail, foundry and heavy-vehicle manufacturers need in-house UT, MT and PT capability for castings, forgings and welded frames, usually as Level I and II quality-control technicians under the plant's own written practice.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Pennsylvania, step by step

Direct answer: Pennsylvania NDT certification under ASNT SNT-TC-1A is employer-based. The written practice sets the rules; you complete classroom training and supervised experience; a Level III administers general, specific and practical exams; you pass a vision test; and the employer certifies you. No state agency issues a general NDT licence, but radiographers face DEP rules.

  1. Employer written practice. Based on SNT-TC-1A or CP-189. If you do not have one, see written practice development.
  2. Formal training. Complete the classroom hours the written practice requires, documented with course records.
  3. Supervised experience. Log on-the-job hours; the training requirements matrix shows typical figures by method and level.
  4. General and specific exams. Theory and your employer's procedures and codes (ASME V, VIII, B31.1 or B31.3, API 1104, AWS D1.1 or D1.5).
  5. Practical exam. Hands-on testing on flawed specimens, graded by a Level III at your facility.
  6. Vision test. Near-vision and colour-contrast checks at the written-practice interval.
  7. Certification and recertification. The employer certifies and later recertifies you; see Level II recertification.

Pennsylvania's nuclear and defence employers often layer additional requirements on top of SNT-TC-1A, so technicians moving from a fabrication shop into the nuclear supply chain should expect extra training, procedure-specific qualification and closer documentation. Keep a complete file of your training, experience and exam records. More detail: SNT-TC-1A training and certification.

Radiography licensing and other Pennsylvania requirements

Direct answer: Pennsylvania became an NRC Agreement State in 2008. Industrial radiography is regulated by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Bureau of Radiation Protection. X-ray industrial radiography falls under 25 Pa. Code Chapter 225, and radioactive-material radiography follows state rules aligned with the NRC's 10 CFR Part 34.

Pennsylvania's industrial radiography rules require a programme for training personnel, written operating and emergency procedures, personnel monitoring, internal reviews and a defined organisational structure for radiographic operations. Registrants and licensees may not let anyone act as a radiographer or radiographer's assistant unless that person meets the training and testing requirements in the rules. Because Pennsylvania's Agreement State status is more recent than most, some older documents still refer to NRC licensing for sealed sources; today DEP is the licensing authority. Confirm current requirements with DEP before planning a programme.

Atlantis NDT's RT courses teach radiographic technique, exposure, film and digital interpretation and code acceptance criteria for SNT-TC-1A Level I and II. The state radiation-safety training and qualification of radiographers and assistants are separate requirements managed by your radiation safety officer. We help employers plan both so they run in parallel.

Boilers and pressure vessels. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry's boiler division administers the state boiler and unfired pressure vessel law within the National Board framework. NDT on repairs and alterations follows the National Board Inspection Code and ASME Sections I and VIII.

Pipelines. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission's pipeline safety programme oversees intrastate gas and certain hazardous-liquid pipelines, with PHMSA covering interstate lines. Gathering lines in the shale fields have their own reporting regime. API 1104 governs most pipeline weld inspection.

Bridges. PennDOT and local owners manage a very large inventory of bridges, many of them older steel structures. Bridge fabrication and repair welds follow AWS D1.5, and fracture-critical members need careful UT and MT.

Codes commonly used in Pennsylvania. ASME Section XI at Beaver Valley, Limerick, Peach Bottom and Susquehanna; ASME Sections III and V and nuclear quality programmes in the supply chain; ASME VIII and B31.1 or B31.3 in plants; API 1104 on pipelines; AWS D1.1 and D1.5 for structures and bridges; NAVSEA requirements for Navy work; and NAS 410 for aerospace. Some employers also ask for AWS CWI or API inspector credentials for particular roles. Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A only; we mention these only as local context.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Pennsylvania

Direct answer: Pennsylvania technicians can take theory live online, join a private live-virtual cohort for their employer, or have an Atlantis Level III deliver the programme onsite at their mill, plant, depot or shop. Atlantis has no training centre in Pennsylvania; practical exams happen at the client's facility on real specimens.

Pennsylvania scheduling follows nuclear refuelling outages, which are planned well in advance, steel-mill maintenance shutdowns, and the construction season. Winter weather limits outdoor pipeline work in the northern tier, which often makes winter the best time for theory and spring for onsite practicals. Ask about onsite training for your Pennsylvania crew.

For Pennsylvania employers: written practice and Level III services

Direct answer: Pennsylvania fabricators, manufacturers, inspection contractors and gas-field service companies use Atlantis NDT to write or update SNT-TC-1A written practices, provide outside Level III services, administer exams and train whole teams. Customer audits from nuclear, defence and energy clients look closely at these records.

We often meet Pennsylvania manufacturers that built NDT capability gradually, with one or two technicians trained by a previous employer and no written practice of their own. When a nuclear, defence or energy customer asks for certification records, that gap becomes urgent. Other common issues include written practices that do not cover PAUT, unclear rules for crediting previous experience, missing vision records and practical exams without documented grading. We can review your documents, write or revise the written practice, prepare exam banks and act as your examining Level III.

Practise before your practical exam

Direct answer: The Atlantis Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees rehearse 12 methods in five environments: an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. It is a practice tool only and does not replace the practical exam on real specimens set by your Level III.

Pennsylvania fabrication, rail and steel trainees get most from the welding workshop and NDT lab, gas-field trainees from the oil and gas site, and rotorcraft trainees from the aircraft hangar. See Practical NDT, Practical NDT in Pennsylvania, and city pages for Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. For written exam practice, try the UT Level 2 practice questions.

Your instructor

Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He designs the course content, maps it to each employer's written practice and oversees exams. On onsite programmes in Pennsylvania he works with your Level III or serves as examining Level III where you do not have one.
