NDT Simulator and Hands-On Practice for Harrisburg and the Lower Susquehanna Valley

A few miles downriver from Pennsylvania’s state capitol, on an island in the Susquehanna, a shut-down nuclear unit is being brought back to life. The former Three Mile Island Unit 1, renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center, is being prepared for a restart targeted for 2027, and that single project has put inspection, weld repair and component refurbishment back at the centre of the Harrisburg area’s industrial conversation. Add another operating nuclear station downriver in York County, hundreds of state-owned steel bridges managed from the PennDOT headquarters in Harrisburg, an Air National Guard special operations wing at Harrisburg International Airport, military depots and logistics hubs along the Interstate 81 corridor, and natural gas liquids pipelines crossing the valley, and you have a region with a steady need for skilled NDT technicians. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Practical NDT is that portal: an immersive, 3D, game-like platform where users log in from a browser or the app and work realistic inspection jobs with instant scored feedback, at any skill level from first-time trainee to Level III. This page explains how it fits the Harrisburg area’s nuclear, infrastructure, aviation and industrial work.

Why Hands-On NDT Practice Matters in Harrisburg’s Nuclear and Infrastructure Sector

Nuclear work is the most demanding inspection environment most technicians will ever see. Restarting a unit that has been shut since 2019 involves examining and refurbishing large amounts of equipment: piping and welds, pressure boundary components, heat exchangers, condensers and steam generator tubing, pumps and valves, and supports. Eddy current tube inspection, ultrasonic examination of welds and base material, visual examination and surface methods all play a part, and the work is performed under tightly controlled procedures, dose limits and outage schedules where time on the job is precious. A technician who arrives unprepared costs the whole crew.

Bridges add a different pressure. PennDOT manages a very large inventory of state-owned bridges, and many of the steel structures around Harrisburg — including the multiple river crossings over the Susquehanna — include welded connections, pins, hangers and details where fatigue cracking is a known concern. Inspectors need to be fluent in VT, MT, PT and UT on in-service welds, often from a snooper truck or rope access, and they may go months between UT jobs.

In both settings, skills are perishable and practice is hard to come by. Nuclear-representative specimens are rare and tightly controlled; bridge-fatigue crack samples are not something most employers keep in stock; radiography involves licensing and exclusion zones. Practical NDT lets technicians rehearse the relevant techniques and defect types as often as needed, without consuming a specimen, occupying a lab bench, or going anywhere near a source or a radiologically controlled area.

Methods and Environments: Eddy Current, IRIS, PAUT and More

Practical NDT covers twelve methods across five workplace environments. Surface methods are PT, MT and VT; volumetric methods are contact UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT; electromagnetic methods are ET and MFL; and the specialist set includes LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS internal rotary UT for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and PMI alloy verification.

For Harrisburg’s power-generation workforce, the Oil & Gas Site environment, with 73 jobs in a process-plant setting, is the most relevant. Although it is built as an oil and gas facility, the equipment types are the same families found in any thermal plant: heat exchangers, condensers, piping and pressure vessels. Users practise ET and IRIS tube inspection, telling pitting from wall loss and recognising support-plate signals; corrosion mapping on piping; PMI alloy verification of the kind used when replacement components arrive during refurbishment; and LRUT screening of long piping runs.

For weld-focused crews — nuclear piping, bridge repairs, pipeline tie-ins — the Welding Workshop, with 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints, provides angle-beam UT, phased array and TOFD scenarios alongside MT and PT on weld toes and RT interpretation. Using the phased array simulator scenarios, an inspector can compare how a toe crack, a lack-of-fusion flaw and a root geometry signal look on a sectorial scan, then check the same flaw types on TOFD.

The Aircraft Hangar, 54 jobs, covers airframe and component inspection with eddy current and visual scenarios, relevant for military and civil aircraft maintenance at Harrisburg International Airport. The NDT Lab, 52 jobs on bench specimens and reference blocks, is where everyone builds fundamentals, and the Storage Tank environment offers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening, relevant to fuel storage at airports, depots and terminals across the valley.

Built for Every Skill Level

Practical NDT is built for three kinds of users. New trainees work through 33 guided lessons covering the fundamentals of each method, from probe selection and calibration to magnetising technique and penetrant dwell, each ending in a scored job. That is useful for the steady stream of people entering inspection from welding, the trades or military service in central Pennsylvania.

Working technicians use rare-defect refreshers and adaptive scenarios between assignments. A bridge inspector who mostly does visual work can sharpen UT on fatigue-prone details before a scheduled inspection; a plant technician heading into an outage can rehearse ET tube signals the week before. Scenarios adapt to the user’s results so the platform keeps pushing past comfortable territory.

Level IIIs and team leads can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively against the same defects, and identify coverage gaps before an outage or a large inspection programme begins. For a contractor staffing up for a restart or a bridge season, that is a practical way to see who is ready and who needs more supervised time. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who leads Atlantis training.

How It Complements Formal ASNT Training and NDT Practical Exam Preparation

To state it without qualification: Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens required by ASNT SNT-TC-1A and the employer’s written practice. Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer certifies its own personnel; the written practice defines training, experience and examination requirements; and the practical exam is performed on physical specimens with real equipment and graded by a qualified examiner.

What Practical NDT offers is better preparation for that exam and better retention after it. Candidates can practise many realistic jobs, see instantly what they missed, and try again. Supervisors can judge readiness objectively. Certified technicians can keep less-used methods current. For structured coursework and certification preparation, see Atlantis NDT training and certification; Practical NDT sits alongside that training, not in place of it.

Harrisburg-area nuclear utilities and their contractors commonly apply additional qualification requirements of their own, for example ultrasonic performance demonstration requirements under the ASME code for in-service inspection, and bridge owners may specify their own inspector qualifications. Those are market context only — requirements local employers may impose — and Atlantis does not train toward or administer them; Atlantis frames its training and Practical NDT around ASNT SNT-TC-1A.

The Harrisburg Inspection Map: Crane, Peach Bottom, PennDOT, the Guard and the I-81 Corridor

The Harrisburg region’s inspection demand comes from a small number of very large anchors. The Crane Clean Energy Center on Three Mile Island, near Middletown in Dauphin County, is the former TMI Unit 1, shut in 2019 and now being prepared for a restart targeted for 2027 under a long-term power agreement to supply data-centre demand. Downriver on the Susquehanna in York County, the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station continues to operate, with its own periodic refuelling outages. Both are named here only as industry context, not as Practical NDT customers.

Aviation is the second anchor. Harrisburg International Airport in Middletown is home to the Pennsylvania Air National Guard’s 193rd Special Operations Wing, and the airfield supports civil aviation maintenance as well. Airframe and component inspection relies heavily on eddy current and visual methods. The wider region also hosts defence depots and logistics facilities, including the Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg and supply installations near New Cumberland and Mechanicsburg, where equipment maintenance involves welding and inspection.

Steel and infrastructure complete the picture. Steelton, just south of the city, was a steel town for well over a century, and its rail-making mill closed in January 2026, a reminder of how much of the valley’s skilled metalworking labour now needs to redeploy into inspection, maintenance and construction. Natural gas liquids pipelines cross southern Pennsylvania on their way to the Delaware River, adding demand for weld inspection and corrosion work. Radiography anywhere in the region falls under Pennsylvania’s radiation control framework: Pennsylvania is an NRC Agreement State, and the Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Radiation Protection licenses radioactive materials, including industrial radiography sources, while the NRC regulates the nuclear power stations themselves.

Hands-On NDT Training in Harrisburg and NDT Training Online in Pennsylvania

Searches for hands-on NDT training in Harrisburg or NDT training online in Pennsylvania usually come from two groups: career changers from the valley’s trades and military community, and working technicians trying to add a method. Both need theory for the written exams and supervised hands-on training on real equipment for the practical exam and experience hours. Practical NDT is the virtual NDT training layer in between, available any evening, so that the limited supervised time an employer can provide is spent on the things only real equipment can teach. For someone in Carlisle, Hershey, Lebanon or York, that flexibility matters.

Bringing Practical NDT to Your Harrisburg Team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and the best way to judge its fit is a short live walkthrough. For Harrisburg-area teams, demos usually focus on ET and IRIS tube scenarios and weld UT for power-plant and outage crews, weld and surface methods for bridge inspectors, eddy current in the Aircraft Hangar for aviation maintainers, and the Level III tools for assigning scenario sets and reviewing results. Rollouts usually begin with a pilot group and a lead, then expand. Pricing is quoted on request and scaled to your team; there are no published prices.

Request a Practical NDT demo for Harrisburg. Outage and plant contractors can ask about pre-outage readiness scenario sets, and bridge inspection teams can ask about weld and fatigue-detail practice. You can also write to info@atlantisndt.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?

No. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the employer certifies personnel through its written practice, and the practical exam is performed on real specimens with real equipment. Practical NDT is practice and preparation only and does not grant any certification.

What experience level is it for?

Every level. Trainees use 33 guided lessons; working technicians use rare-defect refreshers and adaptive scenarios; Level IIIs and leads build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps.

Is it suitable for nuclear outage preparation?

It can help technicians rehearse general techniques such as ET and IRIS tube inspection, weld UT and PAUT, and surface methods before an outage. It does not satisfy any nuclear-specific qualification or performance demonstration requirement that a utility or code may impose; those remain the responsibility of the employer and the utility.

Can bridge inspectors use it?

Yes. Weld UT, PAUT, MT and PT scenarios in the Welding Workshop reflect the kind of weld and toe-crack inspection performed on steel bridge details. It supplements, and does not replace, the qualifications required by the bridge owner.

Does it require radiation sources, specimens or a lab?

No. Everything runs in a browser or the app, so no specimens or sources are used. Real industrial radiography still requires licensing and safety compliance under Pennsylvania’s radiation control programme.
