Curriculum Coverage
The Washington DC offer is ASNT NDT Level III exam preparation for the Basic and Method examinations, plus SNT-TC-1A Level III services for employers: Written Practice authoring and review, procedure approval, and Level I and II examination and certification under the employer's own written practice. Aerospace employers working to NAS 410 or EN 4179 certify their personnel themselves, under their written practice and a Responsible Level 3; Atlantis does not deliver or examine NAS 410, EN 4179 or ISO 9712 qualification. ASNT publishes the current exam format, question counts and testing-centre arrangements; check asnt.org. Codes such as ASME B&PV Section V and the ASME B31 piping series appear as context for procedure writing, not as separate certifications.

ASNT Level III exam preparation in Washington, DC: the direct answer
Short answer: Candidates in the Washington, DC region, including suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia, prepare for the ASNT NDT Level III Basic exam and at least one method exam through self-paced online modules with an ASNT NDT Level III, or through an onsite cohort at their employer's facility. ASNT decides eligibility, runs the proctored examinations and issues the certificate. Atlantis NDT prepares candidates and supports their employers; it does not issue certificates or run ASNT exams.
The Washington region produces a different kind of Level III candidate from an oil-and-gas metro. Many work for, or alongside, the federal government: defence contractors, naval and aviation programmes, federal research and transportation agencies, and the engineering firms that serve them. Others come from the military with years of nondestructive inspection behind them. A growing group work on the region's construction boom, from transit and bridges to the large data-centre developments in Northern Virginia. What they share is an environment where procedures and personnel records are read closely by contracting officers, government quality representatives and regulators.
This page covers how the Level III route works for that audience, what the exams involve, how we plan study, and how employers keep Level III cover in place while a candidate prepares. To start, request a Washington, DC Level III prep quote; we reply within one business day.
Why the Level III matters in federal and defence work
Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A and ANSI/ASNT CP-189, the Level III is the technical authority of an NDT programme. The Level III establishes techniques, writes and approves procedures, interprets codes, specifications and contract requirements, selects methods and techniques, and trains and examines Level I and II personnel under the employer's written practice or programme document.
In the Washington region, the Level III often sits between the NDT technicians and a demanding customer. Typical responsibilities include:
- mapping a contract's NDT requirements, which may call up a military standard, a NAVSEA technical publication, an aerospace standard or a federal agency specification, into procedures the technicians can actually follow;
- keeping personnel qualification records in a form a government source inspector or prime contractor's auditor will accept;
- approving technique sheets and reviewing indications on fabricated parts, structural welds and assemblies;
- answering technical questions from engineers, contracting staff and regulators about what a method can and cannot detect.
Where a contract requires a specific personnel-qualification scheme, that scheme governs. Atlantis training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based; we mention other schemes on this page only as context for what some local employers also ask for.
Eligibility: ASNT's education and experience routes
ASNT publishes three routes to its NDT Level III examinations. Each combines education with experience in an assignment at least comparable to a Level II in the method sought. A four-year degree in engineering or a physical science carries the shortest experience requirement; at least two academic years of engineering or physical-science study carries a longer one; the route with no college requirement asks for the most experience. The exact requirements and how ASNT evaluates experience are published by ASNT; read them alongside our NDT Level III certification requirements guide.
| Washington-region candidate | Likely ASNT route | The question to resolve early |
|---|---|---|
| Engineer at a defence contractor, federal lab or engineering firm | Degree route | Whether your experience was hands-on NDT comparable to Level II in the method, rather than design, research or oversight |
| Technician with engineering or physical-science coursework | Partial-degree route | Transcripts that show qualifying study, plus method-specific experience records |
| Military veteran with nondestructive inspection experience | Experience route, or a degree route if you hold a qualifying degree | How your service records describe the work; ASNT, not the training provider, decides how it counts |
| Senior Level II at a contractor, shipyard supplier or testing agency | Experience route | Records from previous employers, especially after moves between contracts |
Veterans in particular should assemble their documentation before applying. Military nondestructive inspection work is often highly relevant, but it has to be described in terms that show method-specific experience comparable to Level II. We will look over your history and tell you plainly how it reads. For the broader progression, see the Level II to Level III pathway guide.
On funding: GI Bill and similar education benefits generally require an approved school or programme. Atlantis does not claim approval under those programmes. Many candidates in this region are sponsored by their employer instead; ask your training officer or HR team what your contract or company policy allows.
The exams: Basic plus at least one method
To earn the ASNT NDT Level III for the first time, you pass the Basic examination and at least one method examination. The Basic is taken once; every method you add later needs only its own method exam. ASNT publishes the current number of questions, time limits, passing criteria and testing arrangements and updates them from time to time, so we prepare against ASNT's published figures rather than repeating them.
Basic examination
Personnel certification under SNT-TC-1A and CP-189, the CP-105 topical outlines, materials and process technology, codes, standards and procedures, NDT training, and Level II-depth familiarity with the common methods. Defence and aerospace candidates often know their own programme documents well but need to learn SNT-TC-1A and CP-189 in the detail the Basic expects. See Level III Basic exam prep.
Method examinations
| Method | Where it shows up in the Washington region | Prep |
|---|---|---|
| UT | Structural and bridge welds, naval and defence fabrication, plate and forgings, power plant components | Level III UT exam prep |
| RT | Welded fabrication and piping for defence, energy and utility work | Level III RT exam prep |
| MT | Structural steel, ship and defence fabrication, forgings | Level III MT exam prep |
| PT | Aerospace and defence parts, non-ferrous components, weld surface inspection | Level III PT exam prep |
| ET | Aircraft structures and components, tubing, conductivity and coating checks | Level III ET exam prep |
| VT | Weld and structural inspection on every construction and fabrication job | Level III VT exam prep |

Who issues what: ASNT, your employer and Atlantis
Federal contracting rewards precision, so here is the division of roles stated precisely.
- ASNT administers the ASNT NDT Level III programme: application review, proctored examinations and the certificate. Its central certification programmes for other levels, including the scheme previously known as ACCP, are also administered by ASNT.
- Your employer certifies you as its Level III. Under SNT-TC-1A, that happens through the employer's written practice, which may add a specific examination on the company's own procedures, codes and products. Under CP-189, which some defence and power-generation contracts specify, the employer's programme ties Level III certification more closely to the ASNT certificate. Where a contract calls up another scheme, that scheme's rules apply.
- Atlantis NDT provides preparation and Level III services. We do not issue ASNT certificates, and we do not represent any training as satisfying a contract-specific scheme unless that scheme accepts it.
Employers whose programme documents need work can use written practice development and SNT-TC-1A training and certification. ASNT NDT Level III certificates run on a five-year cycle and are renewed through renewal points or by retaking the method exam; see Level III recertification points.
A study plan for Washington-region candidates
Most candidates here are studying alongside demanding jobs, security-cleared work that cannot be brought home, and long commutes on the Beltway, I-95 or the Metro. The plan is built so that study happens on your own time and devices, with nothing from your employer's controlled programme needed.
- Eligibility review. We confirm which ASNT route applies and how your experience reads, before you apply.
- Diagnostic. A test across every Basic domain and your chosen method produces a gap map that sets the plan length and emphasis.
- Certification documents. SNT-TC-1A, CP-189 and CP-105, read in full. Candidates from programmes run to other schemes need to unlearn assumptions here.
- Materials and processes. Manufacturing and welding processes, heat treatment, and in-service damage, linked to the discontinuities they create and the methods that find them.
- Method familiarity. Level II-depth drills on the methods you do not use daily, focused on method and technique selection.
- Method exam depth. Theory, calculations, technique choice and procedure content for each method you are sitting.
- Timed mocks, error log and a go / no-go decision. If the mock results say wait, we say so.
Sessions run self-paced online across DC, suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. For groups, we deliver at the employer's facility, taken around production, test campaigns or outage windows. There is no Atlantis training centre in the Washington region.
Employers in the Washington region that need Level IIIs (context)
The sectors below show where Level III authority is typically required in and around the capital. They are context only, not Atlantis customers.
- Naval and maritime. Naval Sea Systems Command is headquartered at the Washington Navy Yard, and the shipbuilding and ship-repair base in Hampton Roads, including Newport News Shipbuilding and Norfolk Naval Shipyard, is within reach. Naval work commonly references NAVSEA technical publications and military standards for NDT and personnel qualification; we mention those only as the context some employers work to.
- Naval and military aviation. Naval Air Station Patuxent River in southern Maryland and Joint Base Andrews support aviation test and maintenance activity, and the region's commercial airports support MRO work. Aviation and aerospace programmes commonly follow NAS 410; Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A-based.
- Federal research and transportation. The Federal Highway Administration's Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, Virginia carries out bridge and pavement NDE research, and federal agencies including the FAA, PHMSA and the NRC have headquarters in the region. Their standards and guidance shape the inspection work done by contractors nationwide.
- Bridges and transit. Potomac and Anacostia crossings, interstate bridges and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's system generate steel fabrication and in-service inspection work, usually with AWS D1.5 for bridge welding.
- Data centres and large construction. Northern Virginia, especially Loudoun and Prince William counties, has one of the largest concentrations of data centres in the world. Structural steel, power and mechanical systems for these buildings bring AWS D1.1 and ASME B31 work for testing agencies and fabricators.
- Power and energy. The Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant and the Cove Point LNG terminal in southern Maryland, and the North Anna nuclear plant in Virginia, sit within the region's orbit. Nuclear in-service inspection references ASME Section XI and is often run under CP-189-based programmes.
The result is a Level III population that must be fluent in more than one programme framework, and comfortable explaining the differences. That is a real advantage on the Basic exam's certification questions, provided candidates learn SNT-TC-1A and CP-189 on their own terms. For Level I and II training locally, see NDT training in Washington, DC, and the regional pages for Maryland, Virginia, Baltimore, Norfolk, Newport News and the Mid-Atlantic hub. Sector pages: aviation NDT training and nuclear NDT training.
Radiography jurisdiction: DC, Maryland, Virginia and federal sites
Radiography in the capital region crosses several jurisdictions. Washington, DC is not an NRC Agreement State, so the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulates radioactive materials there. Maryland and Virginia are Agreement States with their own state radiation programmes. Work on federal installations can bring additional site-specific rules from the host agency. A Level III who writes radiography procedures for crews moving between DC, Maryland, Virginia and federal sites must account for each regulator, the employer's licence conditions and site access rules. The RT method exam tests radiation-safety principles; confirm current licence and site requirements with the regulator and the site owner before mobilising.
For DC-area employers: keeping Level III cover in place
A contract award, a customer audit or a Level III's retirement can leave a contractor needing Level III authority faster than an internal candidate can qualify. Common responses in the region:
- Outsourced Level III of record. An external ASNT NDT Level III maintains the written practice, approves procedures and administers Level I and II examinations until your own Level III is in place. See ASNT Level III consulting services and outsourced versus in-house Level III.
- Succession planning. Document the handover so the programme stays auditable through the change; see Level III succession planning.
- Sponsored candidate preparation. One or more internal candidates prepare with progress reporting to the sponsor, inside a wider corporate NDT training plan if needed.
For state-level consulting see NDT consulting in Maryland and Virginia. To discuss your programme, book a Level III consultation for your DC-area team.
Practise before you write the procedure
The Practical NDT simulator lets candidates rehearse 12 method families across twelve workplaces, including an aircraft hangar, a welding workshop and an NDT lab, which suits candidates refreshing methods they have not used since Level II. It is practice only; it does not replace practical examinations on real specimens under a written practice.
Your instructor
Preparation is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. Sessions concentrate on what the exams and the job both test: method selection, procedure content, and reading requirements the way an auditor or customer will.
