Aviation NDT — the in-service, maintenance side of aerospace — runs under a different certification standard from general industry, and that single fact shapes the whole career path. Where a refinery technician certifies under an employer's SNT-TC-1A programme, an MRO technician typically certifies under NAS 410, with the FAA's Part 145 repair-station rules wrapped around everything the shop does.

ET is aviation's signature method — surface crack detection on engine components, wheels, and airframe structure, where sensitivity requirements exceed anything in general industry. UT covers bond integrity and structure; PT under fluorescent examination handles the non-magnetic engine and airframe scope; MT the steel components. RT and increasingly digital radiography examine castings and assemblies. Composites brought their own examination world — bond testing and ultrasonic techniques the general industrial technician never meets.
The governing regime — what acceptance answers to
NAS 410 (and its European twin EN 4179) set training, experience and examination requirements with named responsible Level 3 oversight; OEM requirements layer on top per engine and airframe type; and FAA Part 145 governs the repair station itself. Cross-qualifying from an SNT-TC-1A background is routine but not automatic — the hours and examination structures differ, and employers plan for the bridge.
Who employs certified technicians
Heavy-maintenance MROs, engine-overhaul shops, military depot maintenance (some of the largest NDT employers in the country), and airline maintenance organisations. The military depots in particular train and employ at scale and their technicians move well into civilian MRO work.

How people actually enter this sector
The military depots are the sector’s training engine — many of the country’s aviation NDT technicians qualified inside depot maintenance and moved to civilian MROs. Direct entry happens through Part 145 shops’ own NAS 410 programmes, typically starting on the penetrant line. Aviation-rating veterans carry the strongest transfer of any background.
How training is delivered
Atlantis delivers training on-site at employer facilities — your equipment, your procedures, your Written Practice — under ASNT Level III oversight. We do not operate walk-in classrooms, and say so plainly: for a company qualifying technicians, on-site delivery is the stronger model, and for individuals, cohorts form around employer demand.
Aviation MRO NDT training certifies technicians under NAS 410 — a standard whose requirements are mandatory — rather than the general-industry recommended practice SNT-TC-1A. A named Responsible Level 3 approves the training, sets the examinations and signs the certificate, the employer issues it, and it expires at five years. 14 CFR Part 145 governs the repair station wrapped around all of it.
In-service aviation inspection is a different qualification regime from aerospace manufacturing and from general industry. NAS 410, published through the Aerospace Industries Association, states its requirements as shall — the employer writes a written practice that meets them, not one that merely considers them. EN 4179 is its European counterpart and the two are maintained in step. Every method needs a named Responsible Level 3 qualified in that method; candidates sit general, specific and practical examinations; near-vision acuity is tested annually; and certification lapses at five years unless recertified. The FAA does not certify NDI personnel. It certifies the repair station under 14 CFR Part 145 and the mechanic under Part 65, and Advisory Circular 65-31B is where it points operators and stations for the personnel standard. OEM engine and airframe manuals then layer type-specific technique approvals on top, which is why an MRO technician's value compounds with each programme qualification.

NAS 410 and EN 4179 are harmonised, but a technician qualified under one is not automatically certified under the other, because certification is always issued by the employer. Aerospace manufacturing keeps the same personnel standard and adds Nadcap accreditation audited to AC7114.
Does the FAA certify NDT technicians?
No. The FAA certifies repair stations under 14 CFR Part 145 and mechanics under Part 65; it issues no NDI certificate to an individual. The technician is certified by the employer against NAS 410 or ATA Specification 105, and Advisory Circular 65-31B is where the FAA points operators and repair stations for that personnel standard.
Can an SNT-TC-1A Level II from oil and gas move straight into a Part 145 shop?
Not automatically. The methods transfer; the certification does not. The repair station's Responsible Level 3 reviews documented prior training and on-the-job hours, credits what the records support, then re-examines the candidate general, specific and practical under the station's NAS 410 written practice. Budget the bridge as weeks of examination and technique familiarisation, not a paperwork transfer.
What is ATA Specification 105 and how does it relate to NAS 410?
ATA Specification 105 is the airline industry's guideline for training, qualifying and certifying NDT personnel. It covers the same ground as NAS 410 — written practice, Level 3 authority, three-part examination, vision testing, recertification — from the operator side rather than the manufacturer side. Carrier maintenance programmes commonly cite 105; MRO and OEM-driven work more often cites NAS 410.
Which method does an aviation MRO hire for first?
Fluorescent penetrant and eddy current. The FPI line carries the highest part volume in an engine shop, so it is where new technicians start and where a cohort pays back fastest. Eddy current is aviation's signature method — surface crack detection on discs, blades, wheels and airframe structure at sensitivities general industry never asks for. Ultrasonics follows for structure, bond lines and composites.
How does aerospace manufacturing differ from MRO for NDT qualification?
Same personnel standard, different audit. Manufacturing runs NAS 410 qualification underneath Nadcap accreditation, where the NDT process itself is audited against AC7114 and the prime contractor's own specification. MRO runs NAS 410 underneath 14 CFR Part 145 and the OEM maintenance manual. Manufacturing hunts process escapes in new material; MRO hunts fatigue and corrosion damage accumulated in service.
What NDI personnel records must a Part 145 repair station produce on request?
The written practice itself, the named Responsible Level 3's qualification in each method, and for every technician: education and experience, training hours, documented on-the-job hours, general, specific and practical examination results, a current vision test, the Level 3's signature, and the certification date with its five-year expiry. Auditors read the expiry column first.
