The method mix follows the product. Weld fabrication runs VT against AWS D1.1 or ASME as the first gate, MT on structural steel, RT or UT for full-penetration volumetric acceptance. Foundries lean on RT for internal soundness and MT/PT for surfaces; forge shops on UT for internal flaws in billets and finished forgings; mills on automated UT and ET lines where the examination is part of the production process itself.
The governing regime — what acceptance answers to
Construction codes rather than in-service codes: AWS D1.1 for structural steel, ASME Section VIII and B31.3 for pressure parts, customer specifications layered on both. The shop environment also means the technician works beside the people whose product they judge — the impartiality discipline is learned here.

How training is delivered

We do not operate walk-in classrooms, and say so plainly: for a company qualifying technicians, on-site delivery is the stronger model, and for individuals, cohorts form around employer demand.
Manufacturing NDT training qualifies fabrication, foundry and mill technicians against construction codes — AWS D1.1 for structural steel, ASME Section VIII and B31.3 for pressure parts. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A the surface methods certify fastest: PT Level I needs 4 classroom hours and MT Level I needs 12, against 40 hours for UT or RT.
A fabrication shop's NDT programme is built method by method around what the product demands. Visual testing is the first gate on every weld: AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2020 places inspection in Clause 8, with visual acceptance criteria tabulated and a CWI qualified to AWS QC1 making the call. Magnetic particle covers surface and near-surface discontinuities on ferromagnetic structural steel at production pace; penetrant covers the same scope on aluminium, stainless and non-magnetic castings. Ultrasonic and radiographic testing carry volumetric acceptance on complete-joint-penetration welds and on pressure-boundary work under ASME Section VIII and B31.3. ASNT SNT-TC-1A sets the recommended floor for each — 12 classroom hours for MT Level I against 40 for UT Level I — but the employer's written practice is the binding document, and the employer, not the school, issues the certificate. That is why shops buy this training as an on-site cohort run against their own procedures.

Hours are the SNT-TC-1A recommended minimums for a high-school-graduate candidate; Level II experience is additional to Level I, and the recommended practice pairs hour counts with minimum elapsed-time requirements. The employer's written practice may set higher figures and is the binding document.
Does AWS D1.1 require ASNT-certified NDT technicians?
Yes. AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2020 requires NDT personnel to be qualified under ASNT SNT-TC-1A or an equivalent employer written practice, with Level II performing and interpreting examinations and Level I working under Level II direction. Visual inspection is handled separately: D1.1 accepts an AWS Certified Welding Inspector qualified to AWS QC1, a CWB-qualified inspector, or an individual the Engineer accepts as competent by training and experience.
Which NDT method should a fabrication shop certify first?
Visual testing. It is the first gate on every weld under AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2020 Clause 8, it costs 8 classroom hours at Level I, and it catches profile, undercut and porosity problems before any other method is set up. Magnetic particle and penetrant follow for the surface scope at production volume, then ultrasonics for volumetric acceptance on complete-joint-penetration welds.
How long does it take to move a new hire from zero to MT Level II?
20 classroom hours and 280 documented on-the-job hours in the method. SNT-TC-1A recommends 12 training hours and 70 experience hours for Level I, then 8 further training hours and 210 further experience hours for Level II. The recommended practice pairs those hour counts with minimum elapsed-time requirements, so the calendar governs the schedule as much as the hour log does.
Can a welder cross into weld inspection without a degree?
Yes. SNT-TC-1A sets education, training and experience as alternative qualifying routes rather than imposing a degree requirement, and a welder already reads joint geometry, fit-up and weld sequence — the part that takes newcomers longest to learn. The usual path is VT first against the shop's code, MT or PT next for the surface scope, then UT for volumetric work.
Is a Level II certification portable to another fabrication shop?
No. Under SNT-TC-1A the certificate is issued by the employer against that employer's written practice, so it ends when the employment does. The new shop's Level III may credit documented training and on-the-job hours from the previous file, then examines and certifies the technician afresh. This is why a complete hour log matters more to a career than the certificate itself.
What must a shop have in place before an on-site cohort can certify anyone?
A written practice signed by a Level III, approved written procedures for each method and technique, calibrated equipment, representative specimens containing known discontinuities cut from the shop's own product, and current vision test records for each candidate. Without the specimens the practical examination cannot be run; without the written practice there is nothing to certify against.
