Wichita is a manufacturing town that happens to be famous for aircraft. Manufacturing NDT work in Wichita
Wichita's employer base is the backdrop for every NDT hire in the city. Public employer lists from the Greater Wichita Partnership and the city put aircraft builders at the top: the aerostructures plant that Boeing took back when it completed its acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems, Textron Aviation, and Bombardier's Wichita site. Johnson Controls runs a large HVAC equipment plant. Around them are hundreds of suppliers. We name these only as context for where the work is; Atlantis has no relationship with them.
For a manufacturing NDT technician, that translates into several distinct kinds of work:
- Weld fabrication. Structural steel, frames for agricultural and industrial equipment, skids, tanks and pressure parts. VT is the first gate, MT the usual surface method on carbon steel, and UT or RT where full-penetration welds need volumetric acceptance.
- Machined parts and forgings. Suppliers machining steel, aluminium and titanium parts check for surface cracks with PT and MT and for internal flaws in forgings and bar with UT.
- Castings. RT for internal soundness against reference radiographs, PT and MT for surfaces, and UT for wall thickness.
- HVAC and equipment manufacturing. Brazed and welded joints, coil and frame fabrication, and supplier part inspection. Much of this is production-line VT and PT, with leak testing handled as its own discipline.
- Aerospace supply chain. Parts heading to the airframe plants are inspected to the customer's specification and, often, by NAS 410 certified personnel. That is where the two certification worlds meet in Wichita; see the scheme table below.

A method spotlight for Wichita: MT and UT on fabricated steel
Fabrication shops in Wichita produce a lot of welded carbon steel, and most of their NDT scope is MT and UT. A good MT technician understands field direction, yoke versus prod technique, wet versus dry particles, lighting and demagnetisation, and how AWS D1.1 acceptance criteria are written. Radiation licensing and other Kansas requirements
Kansas is an NRC Agreement State. Radioactive materials used in industrial radiography are licensed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment through its Radiation Control Program, which also handles X-ray registration. Radiographers working with sources must meet the certification and training requirements that come with those licences. If your shop uses a cabinet X-ray or a digital radiography system, registration and safety rules still apply; check the current requirements with KDHE before you plan RT training. Atlantis teaches radiographic technique and film or digital interpretation under SNT-TC-1A; we do not issue radiation safety credentials.
Shops working on defence-related parts may have access, export-control and citizenship rules from their customers. Those are employer matters, not training matters, but they affect who can be trained on which parts.

Moving from welding into NDT in Wichita
