Aerospace NDT Training in Wichita, Kansas

Wichita remains the air capital: Textron Aviation's manufacturing base and Spirit AeroSystems' fuselage and structures work (under Boeing ownership since late 2025) anchor an examination market built on NAS 410 programmes — fluorescent penetrant lines running production volume, ET on machined structure, UT on assemblies and composites. Production NDT here is high-volume and procedure-tight, the classic aerospace entry environment.

Aerospace NDT in brief

Aerospace manufacturing NDT runs under its own certification standard — NAS 410 in the US, EN 4179 in Europe — with OEM requirements layered on top per programme. The methods, the sensitivity requirements and the documentation regime all sit above general industry, which is why aerospace examination experience is one of the most portable credentials in NDT.

What aerospace training covers

Fluorescent penetrant inspection runs at production scale — entire lines, not benches — and is most technicians' entry point. ET covers machined and formed structure with sensitivity requirements general industry never meets. UT examines forgings, assemblies and, increasingly, composite structure with techniques specific to laminates and bonds. RT and digital radiography handle castings and complex assemblies. MT covers the steel scope.

The governing regime

NAS 410 sets training, experience and examination requirements with a named responsible Level 3; EN 4179 mirrors it for European programmes; Nadcap audits the special process itself; and each OEM adds its own approval requirements per engine or airframe programme. Certification under an SNT-TC-1A programme does not transfer automatically — the bridge is routine but planned.

Who employs certified technicians

Airframe and engine OEMs, their tier suppliers, and the completion and modification centres. Production NDT hires steadily and trains at scale, which makes aerospace manufacturing one of the strongest structured entry routes in the industry.

How people enter this sector

Production lines hire and train at scale — the penetrant line is the classic first job — and the NAS 410 structure means the employer’s responsible Level 3 owns your qualification path from day one. Crossover from SNT-TC-1A general industry is routine but bridged deliberately; veterans from aviation maintenance arrive with the strongest head start.

How training is delivered in Wichita

Atlantis delivers training on-site at employer facilities — your equipment, your procedures, your Written Practice — under ASNT Level III oversight. We do not operate walk-in classrooms, and say so plainly: for a company qualifying technicians, on-site delivery is the stronger model, and for individuals, cohorts form around employer demand.

Aerospace NDT training in Wichita: the short answer

Atlantis NDT delivers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based aerospace NDT training for Wichita employers and technicians. Theory runs live online. Practicals run onsite at your facility, whether that's an aerostructures supplier, a machine shop, a composite fabricator or a repair station, under ASNT Level III oversight. Courses cover PT, ET, UT, PAUT, RT, MT and VT at Levels I and II, plus Level III exam preparation. Most Wichita primes certify under NAS 410. Our training supports those written practices but doesn't replace them.

Wichita has a deeper aerospace NDT labour market than almost any other US city. Fuselage and structures production, general-aviation and business-jet manufacturing, a large service and flight-test presence, an Air Force tanker wing, and hundreds of machining, sheet-metal, composite and processing suppliers all need certified inspectors. That density is exactly why "aerospace NDT training Wichita" deserves a specific answer rather than a generic one. Which course helps you depends on where you work, or want to work, in that supply chain and which written practice certifies you there.

Atlantis has no training centre in Wichita. We teach theory live online and bring the practical work to the employer, on the employer's penetrant line, eddy current and ultrasonic instruments, reference standards and part families. In a city full of production NDT, that matters, because a practical exam on generic specimens doesn't prove much about a technician who will be signing for fuselage frames or machined wing fittings.

Aerospace NDT work in Wichita

Wichita also has a substantial non-aerospace NDT market, including refinery and pipeline contractors and fabrication shops working to ASME and AWS codes. That work is covered on our general NDT training page for Wichita.

Aerospace NDT methods for Wichita work, and the specifications behind them

This table is general context. Your customer's purchase order, the OEM's process specifications and your written practice decide what actually applies.

MethodAerospace application in WichitaTypical code / standard
Fluorescent penetrant (PT)Production inspection of machined and formed aluminium, titanium and steel details at OEMs and suppliers; crack checks in serviceASTM E1417, AMS 2644 materials, OEM process specs
Eddy current (ET)Fastener-hole and edge inspection, surface cracks, conductivity verification after heat treatment, corrosion detection in service centresOEM NDT manuals, SAE ARP4402, ASTM E1004
Ultrasonic (UT)Composite laminate and bond-line inspection, plate and forging inspection, thickness checksASTM E2375, OEM composite and bond specifications
Phased array UT (PAUT)Higher-coverage inspection of composite skins, stiffeners and bonded assemblies on qualified techniquesOEM-qualified techniques, employer written practice
Radiography / digital radiography (RT)Castings, complex assemblies, honeycomb core and water-ingress checksASTM E1742; digital radiography standards where specified
Magnetic particle (MT)Steel fittings, fasteners, landing-gear and actuator parts at suppliers and overhaul shopsASTM E1444, OEM specs
Visual (VT)Every inspection stage; borescope inspection in serviceOEM and employer procedures

Wichita method spotlight: composite UT and PAUT. As composite content grows in fuselage, wing and control-surface structure, the inspection workload moves toward ultrasonic methods, both single-element pulse-echo and through-transmission, and increasingly phased array. Composite UT is different from weld UT. Technicians need to understand ply stacking, porosity and delamination signatures, bond-line reflections, the reference standards built for each laminate family, and the C-scan data that production systems produce. Our UT and PAUT courses spend real time on laminate and bonded-structure behaviour, not only steel welds, and the onsite practical uses your own reference panels. Read our aerospace composite inspection methods guide and see the UT Level II course and ultrasonic testing in aviation.

Which certification scheme Wichita aerospace employers expect

Atlantis trains to SNT-TC-1A only. The other schemes are listed so you know what Wichita employers ask for.

SchemeWho requires it in WichitaDoes Atlantis SNT-TC-1A training fit?
NAS 410 / EN 4179The aerostructures and airframe OEMs and the suppliers they flow requirements down toPartly. The method theory overlaps, and some NAS 410 written practices accept outside formal training once the Responsible Level 3 has reviewed it. Certification and examinations remain the employer's. Ask before you enrol.
Nadcap NDT (AC7114 audit criteria)Suppliers accredited for NDT by their customers' requirementsOur records are detailed enough for an auditor to trace content, hours and instructor. Accreditation itself is the supplier's.
FAA Part 145 repair-station programmesService centres and component repair stationsOften yes, as formal training under the station's programme, if its manual allows. Check first.
ASNT SNT-TC-1ASome suppliers, tooling and ground-equipment makers, and Wichita's non-aerospace NDT employersYes. This is the scheme our courses are built on.
US Air Force NDI (T.O. 33B-1-1)Uniformed NDI technicians at McConnell AFBNo. It's a separate military qualification. We can help veterans bridge into civilian certification later.
ISO 9712Occasional export programmesNo. We don't offer it.

The full comparison is in NAS 410 vs SNT-TC-1A. In short, if you work for a Wichita prime or a supplier under NAS 410 flow-down, your Responsible Level 3 owns your path, and outside training is useful for theory, method breadth and exam readiness. If your employer runs an SNT-TC-1A written practice, our courses map straight onto it.

The SNT-TC-1A certification path, step by step

Recommended minimum training and experience by method and level are summarised in the NDT training requirements matrix. Written practices can, and in aerospace frequently do, ask for more.

  1. Identify the written practice that will certify you, and any customer requirements layered on it.
  2. Complete formal training for the method and level. Keep the course outline, hours, dates and instructor record.
  3. Build documented experience under certified personnel, logged as it happens and verified. Aerospace auditors routinely trace experience records back to work orders.
  4. Pass the general exam on method principles.
  5. Pass the specific exam on your employer's equipment, procedures and specifications.
  6. Pass the practical exam on real specimens with known discontinuities, demonstrating set-up, calibration, detection, evaluation and reporting.
  7. Pass the vision exam (near vision and colour contrast), with near vision repeated at least annually.
  8. Get certified in writing by the employer for that method and level.
  9. Recertify at the interval in the written practice, keeping vision current and continuity documented.

Radiation licensing, base access and export control in Wichita

Kansas is an NRC Agreement State. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Radiation Control Program licenses and inspects radioactive materials, including industrial radiography sources, under Kansas regulations compatible with the federal industrial-radiography rules in 10 CFR Part 34. Those rules include the requirement for a second qualified individual during source radiography at temporary job sites. KDHE also registers X-ray producing devices, which covers most aerospace radiography because it uses X-ray cabinets and shielded rooms rather than isotopes. Radiation-safety qualification is a legal requirement for the radiographer and the employer, separate from NDT method certification.

Access matters too. Contractor work at McConnell Air Force Base needs base-access credentials sponsored through the contracting organisation. Defence programmes at Wichita aerospace plants can involve export-controlled technical data, so some roles are limited to US persons. The employer makes that call, and it affects who can attend onsite sessions that use controlled parts or procedures. Where that applies, we build the practical session around specimens and documentation the employer clears for training.

Practise before the practical exam

The Practical NDT simulator lets trainees practise 12 methods across five virtual environments, including an aircraft hangar, so they can rehearse set-up, scanning and indication evaluation before touching real hardware. It's for practice only and doesn't replace the practical examination on real specimens.

Your instructor

Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He oversees course content, onsite practicals and examination administration for the SNT-TC-1A programmes we support.

Frequently asked questions about aerospace NDT training in Wichita

Where can I get aerospace NDT training in Wichita?

Locally, WSU Tech runs an NDT programme with NIAR, and the large employers run in-house NAS 410 training. Atlantis delivers SNT-TC-1A-based training with live online theory and onsite practicals at your employer's facility, but we don't have a classroom in Wichita. Ask us about dates and delivery.

Do Wichita aerospace companies require NAS 410?

The primes and most suppliers in their chains do, through purchase-order flow-down. Some smaller suppliers and non-aerospace employers certify under SNT-TC-1A. Check the job description or ask the employer's NDT Level 3.

Can I get NAS 410 certified through Atlantis?

No. NAS 410 certification is issued by your employer under its written practice. We can provide formal training that some NAS 410 written practices accept, and help employers understand the requirements, but we don't certify personnel to NAS 410.

Can I take aerospace NDT training online in Kansas?

The theory, yes, through our live instructor-led sessions. Practical training and the practical exam need real equipment and specimens, which we deliver onsite at the employer's facility.

Which NDT method is most in demand for Wichita aerospace jobs?

Fluorescent penetrant is the most common entry point on production lines. Eddy current is heavily used in both production and service. UT and PAUT for composites are where demand is growing. Look at local job postings for the exact mix. See penetrant testing in aviation.

How long does it take to get NDT Level II for aerospace?

It varies by method, prior certifications and the written practice. Minimum training and experience differ per method and level, and aerospace written practices often exceed them. Start with the training requirements matrix, then confirm against your employer's document.

What does aerospace NDT training cost in Wichita?

We quote on request. The price depends on methods, levels, headcount, whether practicals run onsite, and whether you also need written-practice or Level III work. Cohort and onsite quotes are returned within one business day. Request a quote.

Do I need a Kansas licence to do industrial radiography?

The employer needs a KDHE radioactive materials licence for source work and KDHE registration for X-ray devices. Radiographers must meet the radiation-safety training and qualification requirements in Kansas regulations. These are separate from your NDT certification.

Can McConnell AFB NDI veterans move into civilian aerospace NDT?

Yes. Military NDI experience is well regarded in Wichita. It doesn't convert directly, though. A civilian employer certifies you under its own written practice and may count documented military training and experience toward it. A refresher on civilian specifications, documentation and the employer's procedures helps.

Can I use GI Bill or WIOA funds for NDT training in Wichita?

Both programmes require approved providers: VA approval for GI Bill benefits, and listing on the state's eligible training provider list for WIOA through KANSASWORKS. Atlantis doesn't claim either approval. Check the VA's comparison tool or KANSASWORKS for approved programmes. Employer-paid training is the other common route.

Can you train our technicians on our own composite reference standards?

Yes. Onsite practicals use your instruments, reference panels and procedures, so the training reflects your parts. Ask about onsite training for your Wichita crew.

Do you prepare Wichita technicians for ASNT Level III?

Yes. We offer Basic and method preparation for experienced Level IIs. See ASNT Level III training, the Basic exam guide and the UT Level 2 practice questions.
