Aerospace NDT training in the US qualifies personnel to NAS 410 Rev 5, not SNT-TC-1A. The employer certifies Level 1 and Level 2 through a designated Responsible Level 3, and Nadcap audits that programme against AC7114 and its method slash sheets. Fluorescent penetrant, eddy current and ultrasonics on composites and forgings carry the work; EN 4179 is the harmonized European equivalent.
Aerospace NDT training is built backwards from the audit. NAS 410, published by the Aerospace Industries Association and current at Revision 5, replaces SNT-TC-1A as the qualification standard across the US aerospace supply chain, and EN 4179 is its harmonized European counterpart. Under NAS 410 the employer certifies Level 1 and Level 2 personnel through a designated Responsible Level 3, who owns the written practice, the examination material and the technique approvals. Nadcap, administered by the Performance Review Institute for SAE, audits that programme to AC7114 and its method slash sheets — AC7114/1 penetrant, AC7114/2 magnetic particle, AC7114/3 ultrasonic, AC7114/4 eddy current — and reads training records, examination results and vision records as closely as the technique itself. Fluorescent penetrant runs as a controlled special process to ASTM E1417 using AMS 2644 qualified materials. Eddy current owns engine and airframe surface inspection. Ultrasonics addresses composite bond lines, disbonds and forgings rather than weld flaws.

Atlantis builds and delivers the classroom, OJT and examination package that satisfies a NAS 410 written practice on your site. The certification itself is issued by your company through its Responsible Level 3 — no training provider can issue a NAS 410 certificate on an employer's behalf.
Does an ASNT Level II certificate qualify me for aerospace NDT work?
Not on its own. US aerospace qualifies personnel to NAS 410, where the employer certifies Level 1 and Level 2 against its own written practice through a designated Responsible Level 3. Prior SNT-TC-1A training and documented experience count toward that record, but the certification itself is issued by the aerospace employer and audited by Nadcap. Europe applies EN 4179 the same way.
What is Nadcap AC7114 and who has to pass it?
AC7114 is the Nadcap audit criteria for non-destructive testing, administered by the Performance Review Institute for SAE, with method slash sheets covering penetrant (AC7114/1), magnetic particle (AC7114/2), ultrasonic (AC7114/3) and eddy current (AC7114/4), and separate criteria for radiography. Boeing, Airbus, GE, RTX and their supply tiers require Nadcap NDT accreditation from suppliers running those processes. Audit intervals extend on demonstrated merit.
Which NDT methods dominate aerospace inspection?
Fluorescent penetrant inspection carries the largest volume, run as a controlled special process to ASTM E1417 using AMS 2644 qualified materials, with bath concentration, ultraviolet intensity, dark-adaptation and process-control records. Eddy current is the primary surface method on engine discs, blades and fastener holes. Ultrasonics covers composites, bonded structure and forgings. Radiography and computed tomography cover castings and assemblies.
How is composite ultrasonic inspection different from weld ultrasonics?
The target changes. Weld UT hunts crack-like reflectors in steel with shear-wave angle beams. Composite UT hunts delaminations, disbonds, porosity and foreign material inside an attenuative, anisotropic laminate, using low-frequency longitudinal probes, through-transmission setups and phased array C-scans. Acceptance comes from the OEM process specification and reference standards containing engineered defects, not from a welding code.
Who is the Responsible Level 3 and why does every aerospace supplier need one?
NAS 410 requires the employer to designate a Responsible Level 3 who owns the written practice, approves techniques and procedures, sets and grades examinations, and certifies Level 1 and Level 2 personnel. That individual qualifies through an Outside Agency examination or a National Aerospace NDT Board. The role is filled by an employee or by contract, and Nadcap verifies the designation and its scope.
Can Atlantis deliver aerospace NDT training at our facility?
Yes. Atlantis builds the classroom, on-the-job training and examination package to your NAS 410 written practice and approval scope, delivers it on your equipment under ASNT Level III oversight, and hands over records structured for a Nadcap AC7114 audit. Certification remains yours to issue through your Responsible Level 3. Request a scoped programme and a quote.

Tell us the methods and levels you need and how many technicians. We reply with available dates, the delivery options that fit, and what your written practice requires — usually the same working day.
Why aerospace NDT training is a different discipline
Aerospace runs the strictest personnel regime in non-destructive testing. Qualification is governed by NAS 410 in the US and EN 4179 in Europe rather than SNT-TC-1A alone, the employer holds approval through a named Responsible Level III, and Nadcap audits examine the training records as rigorously as the technique. A programme that satisfies industrial requirements will not satisfy an aerospace audit.
What the methods look like here
Fluorescent penetrant inspection dominates and is run as a controlled special process with lighting, dark-adaptation, bath-concentration and process-control requirements that industrial PT does not carry. Eddy current is the primary surface method on engine and airframe components. Ultrasonics addresses composites and forgings — a different problem from weld examination, tuned to bond lines and delamination rather than crack detection.
How programmes are built
Backwards from the audit: documented classroom hours per method and level, OJT logged against the requirement, examinations question-banked per method, and a records package that is audit-ready before the audit is scheduled. Atlantis delivers these on-site, configured to your written practice and approval scope. PT training · ET training · corporate aerospace programmes · scope a programme.
Training builds the technicians; the programme still needs Level III authority over it — Aerospace Manufacturing NDT consulting covers written practices, procedure approval and audit defence in this regime.
