Aerospace NDT Training in North Charleston, South Carolina
North Charleston is Boeing's 787 final assembly and its composite aft-fuselage fabrication — one of the largest composite-structure examination operations in the world. Bond and laminate inspection, ultrasonic techniques specific to composite layup, and the documentation regime of commercial-aircraft production define the market; technicians with composite UT experience from here carry a scarce and portable skill.
Aerospace NDT in brief
Aerospace manufacturing NDT runs under its own certification standard — NAS 410 in the US, EN 4179 in Europe — with OEM requirements layered on top per programme. The methods, the sensitivity requirements and the documentation regime all sit above general industry, which is why aerospace examination experience is one of the most portable credentials in NDT.
What aerospace training covers
Fluorescent penetrant inspection runs at production scale — entire lines, not benches — and is most technicians' entry point. ET covers machined and formed structure with sensitivity requirements general industry never meets. UT examines forgings, assemblies and, increasingly, composite structure with techniques specific to laminates and bonds. RT and digital radiography handle castings and complex assemblies. MT covers the steel scope.
The governing regime
NAS 410 sets training, experience and examination requirements with a named responsible Level 3; EN 4179 mirrors it for European programmes; Nadcap audits the special process itself; and each OEM adds its own approval requirements per engine or airframe programme. Certification under an SNT-TC-1A programme does not transfer automatically — the bridge is routine but planned.
Who employs certified technicians
Airframe and engine OEMs, their tier suppliers, and the completion and modification centres. Production NDT hires steadily and trains at scale, which makes aerospace manufacturing one of the strongest structured entry routes in the industry.
How people enter this sector
Production lines hire and train at scale — the penetrant line is the classic first job — and the NAS 410 structure means the employer’s responsible Level 3 owns your qualification path from day one. Crossover from SNT-TC-1A general industry is routine but bridged deliberately; veterans from aviation maintenance arrive with the strongest head start.

How training is delivered in North Charleston
Atlantis delivers training on-site at employer facilities — your equipment, your procedures, your Written Practice — under ASNT Level III oversight. We do not operate walk-in classrooms, and say so plainly: for a company qualifying technicians, on-site delivery is the stronger model, and for individuals, cohorts form around employer demand.

Aerospace NDT training in North Charleston: the short answer
Atlantis NDT delivers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based aerospace NDT training for North Charleston employers and technicians. Theory runs live online and practicals run onsite at your facility, under ASNT Level III oversight. The emphasis is on what the Lowcountry's aerospace work actually uses: ultrasonic inspection of composite and bonded structure (UT and PAUT), plus penetrant, eddy current, radiography and visual testing at Levels I and II, and Level III exam preparation. Composite-structure employers usually certify under NAS 410. Our training supports their written practice and does not replace it.
North Charleston's aerospace NDT market is unusual, and that's why it gets its own page. Most aerospace cities are dominated by machined metal parts and penetrant lines. Here, the anchor is commercial-aircraft composite fuselage fabrication and final assembly, so the defining NDT skill is ultrasonic inspection of carbon-fibre laminates and bonded joints. Military airlift maintenance, a growing supplier base along the I-26 corridor and the port's industrial economy add other methods and requirements around that core. The right training depends on which of those worlds you work in.
Atlantis has no training centre in North Charleston, Charleston or anywhere else in South Carolina. Theory is taught live online. Practicals run at the employer's facility, on the employer's instruments, reference standards and procedures. For composite inspection that's essential. Reference standards are built for specific laminate families and thicknesses, and a practical on unrelated panels doesn't prove much.
Aerospace NDT work in North Charleston
- Commercial composite aircraft. Boeing South Carolina, next to Charleston International Airport, fabricates composite aft-fuselage structure and runs final assembly of the 787 Dreamliner. Composite fuselage barrels, frames and bonded details need ultrasonic inspection in volume: pulse-echo and through-transmission, automated scanning systems producing C-scans, and manual follow-up on indications, alongside visual, dimensional and, where specified, radiographic and eddy current work on metallic details and fastened joints.
- Military airlift maintenance. Joint Base Lindsey Graham, renamed from Joint Base Charleston in August 2026, is home to the 437th Airlift Wing, which flies and maintains C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Air Force NDI shops are staffed by uniformed technicians qualified under Air Force technical orders. Contractor and depot-support roles around the base, and veterans leaving those NDI shops, are an important part of the local NDT labour pool.
- Tier suppliers and the I-26 corridor. Machining, composite fabrication, interiors, tooling and assembly suppliers have grown around the 787 programme and the wider Lowcountry industrial base. Many need NDT capability under customer flow-downs. Smaller ones often don't have a full-time Level III.
- The industrial neighbours. The Port of Charleston, automotive and heavy-equipment manufacturing in the region, and fabrication and power work mean many local NDT technicians move between aerospace and industrial work during their careers. Our general NDT training page for North Charleston covers the industrial side.
Aerospace NDT methods for North Charleston work, and the specifications behind them
This is general context. Programme specifications, customer purchase orders and your written practice decide what applies to your work.
| Method | Aerospace application in North Charleston | Typical code / standard |
| Ultrasonic testing (UT), pulse-echo and through-transmission | Composite laminate inspection for delamination, porosity and inclusions; bond-line inspection of bonded joints; manual follow-up of automated scan indications | OEM composite inspection specifications; ASTM E2580 (UT of composite panels) where referenced |
| Phased array UT (PAUT) | Faster, higher-resolution coverage of composite skins, stringers and radii on qualified techniques | OEM-qualified techniques under the employer's written practice |
| Eddy current (ET) | Fastener holes and metallic fittings in the hybrid structure; in-service inspection on military and commercial aircraft | OEM NDT manuals, SAE ARP4402, military technical orders for base work |
| Penetrant testing (PT), fluorescent | Machined metallic details at suppliers; in-service crack checks | ASTM E1417, OEM specs |
| Radiography / digital radiography (RT) | Assemblies and castings where specified; inspection of structure where access is limited | ASTM E1742; digital radiography standards where specified |
| Visual testing (VT) | Surface condition of laminates (resin starvation, wrinkles, impact damage), fastener installation, every assembly stage | OEM and employer procedures |
| Bond testing and other techniques (context) | Some programmes call up bond testers, tap testing or thermography for specific structures | OEM-specific procedures; outside the SNT-TC-1A methods we train in |
North Charleston method spotlight: composite UT. Composite ultrasonic inspection is a different skill from weld UT, and it's the one that makes North Charleston technicians portable across the industry. The things a trainee has to master include how sound behaves in an anisotropic laminate, why back-wall loss matters as much as a mid-plane reflector, how porosity shows up as attenuation rather than a crisp echo, how bond-line indications differ in adhesive and cured-in-place joints, how ramps, radii and ply drops affect the signal, and how to read a C-scan rather than a single A-scan. Our UT and PAUT courses build this foundation with a composite focus, and onsite practicals run on the employer's own reference standards. See the aerospace composite inspection methods guide, the UT Level II course and ultrasonic testing in aviation.
Which certification scheme North Charleston aerospace employers expect
Atlantis trains to SNT-TC-1A only. The other schemes in this table are what local employers may require.
| Scheme | Who requires it in North Charleston | Does Atlantis SNT-TC-1A training fit? |
| NAS 410 / EN 4179 | The airframe OEM and the suppliers it flows requirements down to | Partly. The method theory overlaps, and some NAS 410 written practices accept external formal training after Responsible Level 3 review. Certification and examinations stay with the employer. Check first. |
| Nadcap NDT (AC7114) | Suppliers whose customers require accredited NDT | Our training records are built to be auditable. The accreditation belongs to the supplier. |
| US Air Force NDI (T.O. 33B-1-1) | Uniformed NDI technicians at Joint Base Lindsey Graham | No. It's a separate military qualification. We can help veterans transition into civilian certification. |
| FAA Part 145 repair-station programmes | Commercial MRO and component repair stations in the region | Often yes, as formal training, where the station's manual permits. |
| ASNT SNT-TC-1A | Some suppliers, tooling and equipment makers, and the region's industrial NDT employers | Yes. This is the scheme our courses are built on. |
| ISO 9712 | Some European-owned manufacturers in the state, for non-aerospace work | No. We don't offer it. |
Read NAS 410 vs SNT-TC-1A for the detail. The practical point: at a NAS 410 employer, your Responsible Level 3 controls your qualification. Outside training is most useful for composite UT fundamentals, method breadth and exam readiness. At an SNT-TC-1A employer, our courses map directly onto the written practice.
The SNT-TC-1A certification path, step by step
Recommended minimum training and experience for each method and level are in the NDT training requirements matrix. Aerospace written practices often set higher figures.
- Identify the written practice that will certify you, and any customer requirements on top.
- Complete formal training for the method and level, keeping full records of content, hours, dates and instructor.
- Accumulate documented experience under certified personnel, logged as you go and verified.
- Pass the general examination on method principles.
- Pass the specific examination on the employer's equipment, procedures and acceptance criteria.
- Pass the practical examination on real specimens. For composites, that means panels with known delaminations, inclusions and disbonds.
- Pass the vision examination, with near vision repeated at least annually.
- Receive written certification from the employer.
- Recertify at the interval the written practice sets.

Radiation licensing, base access and TWIC in North Charleston
South Carolina is an NRC Agreement State. Since the former DHEC was reorganised in 2024, radiation control has sat with the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), whose Bureau of Radiological Health licenses radioactive materials, including industrial radiography sources, and registers X-ray equipment. Industrial X-ray units used in shielded rooms need an approved shielding plan. Radiation-safety training and radiographer qualification are legal requirements for the employer and the radiographer, separate from NDT method certification.
Access is the other planning item. Contractor work at Joint Base Lindsey Graham needs base-access credentials through the contracting organisation. Airside and plant work at the airport campus needs employer-sponsored badging. Defence-related work can involve export-controlled data that limits some roles to US persons. Technicians who also take industrial jobs around the Port of Charleston terminals usually need a TWIC card. Employers planning onsite sessions should allow for these constraints when choosing who attends and which parts are used.

Frequently asked questions about aerospace NDT training in North Charleston
Where can I get aerospace NDT training in North Charleston?
Trident Technical College covers NDT within its aircraft maintenance programme, and the large employers train in-house under NAS 410. Atlantis delivers SNT-TC-1A-based training with live online theory and onsite practicals at your employer's facility. We have no classroom in the area. Ask us about dates and delivery.
What NDT skills do composite aircraft employers in Charleston look for?
Mainly ultrasonic inspection of composites: pulse-echo and through-transmission, C-scan interpretation, and increasingly phased array, along with visual inspection of laminates and fastened joints. Penetrant and eddy current matter for the metallic details.
Is composite UT different from weld UT?
Yes, substantially. Composite UT deals with layered, anisotropic material, attenuation-based porosity assessment, bond-line indications and geometry such as ramps and radii. Weld UT is centred on angle-beam examination of steel welds. The physics foundation is shared, but the techniques and interpretation differ.
Can I take aerospace NDT training online in South Carolina?
The theory, yes, live and instructor-led. Practical training and the practical exam need real equipment and specimens, which we deliver onsite at the employer's facility.
Can Atlantis certify me to NAS 410?
No. NAS 410 certification is issued by your employer under its written practice and Responsible Level 3. Some NAS 410 written practices accept outside formal training, so ask your employer before you enrol.
How long does aerospace UT Level II take?
It depends on prior certifications, the written practice and the specific techniques involved. Minimum training and experience vary by method and level, and aerospace written practices often exceed them. See the training requirements matrix, then confirm with your employer.
What does aerospace NDT training cost in North Charleston?
We quote on request. The price depends on methods, levels, number of technicians, whether practicals run onsite, and any written-practice or Level III support. Cohort and onsite quotes are returned within one business day. Request a quote.
Who regulates industrial radiography in South Carolina?
The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services, through its Bureau of Radiological Health. It licenses radioactive materials and registers X-ray equipment. Radiographers must meet its radiation-safety requirements, separately from NDT certification.
Can C-17 NDI veterans from the joint base move into civilian aerospace NDT?
Yes, and their experience is valued. Military NDI qualification doesn't convert automatically. A civilian employer certifies you under its own written practice and may credit documented military training and experience. A refresher on civilian specifications and composite techniques often helps.
Can I use GI Bill or WIOA funding for this training?
Those programmes require approved providers: VA approval for GI Bill benefits, and the state's eligible training provider list for WIOA through SC Works. Atlantis doesn't claim either approval, so check with the VA or SC Works for approved programmes. Employer-funded training is the common alternative.
Can you run practicals on our own composite reference standards?
Yes. That's the point of onsite delivery. Ask about onsite training for your North Charleston crew.
Do you prepare technicians for ASNT Level III?
Yes. We offer Basic and method preparation for experienced Level IIs. See ASNT Level III training, the Basic exam guide and the UT Level 2 practice questions.
