NDT Training and Certification in South Carolina

Short answer: South Carolina technicians and employers get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III training from Atlantis NDT in three ways: live online classes, live-virtual cohorts, or onsite sessions at your own plant, hangar, fabrication shop or outage site. An ASNT NDT Level III leads and oversees the training. Certification is employer-based. Your written practice sets the training, experience and exam rules, and a Level III gives the exams. Atlantis has no South Carolina training centre. We teach online or come to your facility.

Over the last thirty years South Carolina has become one of the country's busiest manufacturing states, and its NDT demand looks different from the oil-and-gas states. The Upstate builds cars, gas turbines and fighter aircraft. The Lowcountry builds wide-body airliners, cars and vans, and moves cargo through one of the East Coast's busiest ports. The Midlands and the Savannah River corridor are home to a Department of Energy site, a commercial nuclear fuel plant and nuclear power stations. Steel mills, tyre plants and a large automotive supplier base sit in between. Each of these sectors asks for something different from an NDT technician: aerospace wants surface and composite inspection to prime specifications, automotive wants fast production inspection, and nuclear wants rigorous documentation. This page covers where the work is, what each sector expects, which state agencies regulate radiography, boilers and pipelines, and how to request a South Carolina training quote.

Where NDT technicians work in South Carolina

Direct answer: South Carolina NDT work clusters in the Upstate (automotive, gas turbines, aerospace, tyres), the Lowcountry around Charleston (aircraft manufacturing, automotive, port, steel, defence), the Midlands around Columbia (nuclear fuel, nuclear power, manufacturing, military), the Savannah River corridor around Aiken (DOE nuclear site) and the Pee Dee and coast (steel, power, paper, fabrication).

The Upstate: Greenville, Spartanburg, Greer and Anderson

The I-85 corridor is South Carolina's manufacturing core. BMW's Plant Spartanburg near Greer is the company's largest plant in the world, and hundreds of automotive suppliers surround it. They need weld inspection on body and chassis parts, ultrasonic checks of spot welds and joints, eddy current sorting and crack detection, and magnetic particle and penetrant inspection of forged, cast and machined components. GE Vernova builds heavy-duty gas turbines in Greenville, where large forgings, castings, rotors and welded casings need ultrasonic, magnetic particle, penetrant and radiographic inspection. Lockheed Martin builds F-16 fighters in Greenville, and the aerospace MRO and supplier base around the Greenville-Spartanburg area adds eddy current, penetrant and ultrasonic work to aerospace specifications. Michelin's North American operations, other tyre makers, and a wide base of metal fabricators add plant and equipment inspection. Duke Energy's Oconee Nuclear Station near Seneca brings ASME Section XI outage work to the western Upstate.

The Lowcountry: North Charleston, Charleston, Summerville and Berkeley County

Boeing South Carolina in North Charleston builds 787 Dreamliners. That means composite structures inspected by ultrasonic methods, metallic parts inspected by penetrant and eddy current, and a supplier base working to Boeing and aerospace specifications. Mercedes-Benz Vans in Ladson and Volvo Cars in Ridgeville bring automotive inspection. Nucor's steel mill in Berkeley County and other heavy fabricators need UT of plate and welds, MT and VT. The Port of Charleston's terminals and cranes, Joint Base Charleston's air and naval operations, and the Naval Weapons Station add structural, aircraft and equipment inspection. Bridges such as the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and SCDOT's highway programme need bridge-weld and structural inspectors.

The Midlands: Columbia, Lexington County, Sumter and Fairfield County

Westinghouse's Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility makes nuclear fuel assemblies. The V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Fairfield County operates one unit. Fort Jackson and Shaw Air Force Base near Sumter, a growing automotive cluster including the new Scout Motors plant at Blythewood, and manufacturers along I-26 and I-77 add production, aircraft and structural NDT demand.

The Savannah River corridor: Aiken, North Augusta and Barnwell

The Department of Energy's Savannah River Site near Aiken is one of the largest employers in the state. Its nuclear materials, waste-processing and construction projects need welding inspection, radiography, ultrasonic testing and visual inspection under strict quality-assurance programmes. Contractors and fabricators in Aiken County and across the river in Augusta serve it.

The Pee Dee, Rock Hill and the coast

Duke Energy's Catawba Nuclear Station in York County, near Rock Hill, and H.B. Robinson near Hartsville add more outage work. Steel mills, paper mills, fabricators and power plants across Florence, Darlington and Georgetown need plant and weld inspection. Gas transmission pipelines crossing the state bring API 1104 construction and integrity work.

Wherever your company works in South Carolina, you can ask about onsite training for your South Carolina crew. We schedule around production, model changeovers and outages.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses for South Carolina employers

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT teaches UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET at Level I and Level II, plus Level III exam preparation. Every course is built on ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your company's written practice. The table maps each method to South Carolina work.

Aerospace suppliers in South Carolina often work to prime-contractor specifications that reference NAS 410 alongside or instead of SNT-TC-1A. We are clear about what we teach: Atlantis training is SNT-TC-1A-based. If your customer requires NAS 410 qualification, your Level III maps our training to it. Level III candidates usually prepare for the ASNT Basic examination and a method examination, often UT, PT or RT. See ASNT Level III training. UT Level II candidates can use the UT Level 2 practice questions to check themselves before written exams.

NDT training by city in South Carolina

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT serves every South Carolina city online or onsite at the employer's facility. North Charleston and Aiken have dedicated training pages, including aerospace and nuclear pages, and Charleston and Columbia have Practical NDT simulator pages. The table shows each city's main sectors.

North Charleston. The aircraft plant and its suppliers drive demand for UT of composites, PT and ET of metallic parts, and VT of assemblies, all to aerospace specifications and with tight records. Automotive plants nearby need production inspectors. See the North Charleston training page and aerospace NDT training in North Charleston.

Aiken. Work at and around the Savannah River Site runs under DOE quality-assurance requirements, and the paperwork matters as much as the inspection. Technicians need solid weld-inspection skills across RT, UT, VT and PT, plus documentation discipline. See the Aiken training page and nuclear NDT training in Aiken.

Greenville and Spartanburg. The Upstate splits between production NDT inside plants, where ET, MT, PT and UT on parts dominate, and heavy-component inspection on turbines and fabrications, where UT, PAUT, RT and MT dominate. A production inspector may need deep skill in one technique on one part family. A turbine or fabrication inspector needs broad code knowledge. We build the course around which of those your crew does. Onsite training on your own parts is especially effective because acceptance criteria are part-specific.

Columbia. Nuclear fuel manufacturing and the V.C. Summer station need nuclear-quality inspection. The automotive and general manufacturing base needs production inspectors. The Practical NDT Columbia page covers simulator practice.

Rock Hill, Florence and the coast. Outage work at Catawba and Robinson, steel and paper mills, and coastal fabrication shops are served online and onsite, with training timed between outages.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in South Carolina, step by step

Direct answer: South Carolina does not issue general NDT technician licences. Under SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you based on its written practice. The practice sets training hours, experience, exams and vision tests, a Level III administers the exams, and the employer issues the certification.

  1. Your employer adopts a written practice. It defines methods, levels, training and experience hours, exam content, passing grades, vision tests and recertification. If your company needs one, see written practice development.
  2. You complete formal training. Classroom hours per method and level come from the practice, based on SNT-TC-1A recommendations. See the training requirements matrix for the guideline figures.
  3. You build documented experience. On-the-job hours in the method, under qualified supervision, on the kind of parts or welds you will inspect.
  4. You pass the general, specific and practical exams. The general exam covers theory, the specific exam covers your employer's procedures and specifications, and the practical exam is done on real specimens, all administered by a Level III.
  5. You pass the vision examination. Near-vision acuity is checked annually, and colour contrast as the practice requires.
  6. Your employer certifies you. The certification belongs to that employer. If you move from an Upstate supplier to a Lowcountry plant, your new employer decides how to recertify you.
  7. You recertify on schedule. The interval and the evidence required are in the written practice.

The ASNT NDT Level III certificate is different. ASNT issues it centrally by examination, and employers then certify their Level III under their own practice. More detail is on the SNT-TC-1A training and certification page.

Radiography licensing and other South Carolina requirements

Direct answer: South Carolina is an NRC Agreement State. Radioactive material licences for industrial radiography are issued by the state under Regulation 61-63 (Radioactive Materials, Title A). On 1 July 2024 the former SC DHEC was split into two agencies, and radioactive materials licensing now sits with the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES). Confirm the current licensing office and forms with SCDES before applying.

For a South Carolina radiography company, the state licence covers radiation-safety training, radiographer and assistant qualification, personnel dosimetry, survey instruments, source storage and transport, and field-crew rules, which follow the model of 10 CFR Part 34. X-ray equipment is registered with the state separately. Radiation-safety training is separate from SNT-TC-1A RT method training, which covers exposure technique, film and digital processing and interpretation. A field radiographer needs both. Work inside the Savannah River Site falls under DOE requirements as well, so check the site's rules before a crew mobilises. Because the 2024 reorganisation moved programmes between agencies, confirm current requirements before a new crew starts work.

Boilers and pressure vessels. South Carolina's boiler safety programme is administered by the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR) under the state Boiler Safety Act. New boilers must be built to code and registered with the National Board, and the regulations can adopt sections of the National Board Inspection Code. ASME Section V NDT methods and Section I or VIII acceptance criteria therefore apply in shop and field work.

Pipelines. Intrastate gas pipeline safety in South Carolina is overseen by the state's pipeline safety programme under the Office of Regulatory Staff. PHMSA regulates interstate gas and hazardous-liquid lines. Pipeline welding and NDT follow API 1104, and operators layer their own operator-qualification programmes on top of SNT-TC-1A certification.

Codes and specifications common in South Carolina. Aerospace prime-contractor specifications and NAS 410 in the Charleston and Greenville aerospace supply chains, mentioned as context only. Automotive OEM and supplier quality standards. ASME Section III and Section XI in nuclear work, plus DOE quality-assurance requirements at the Savannah River Site. ASME Section V, VIII and B31.1 in power and turbines. AWS D1.1 for structural steel and AASHTO/AWS D1.5 for bridges. API 1104 for pipelines.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across South Carolina

Direct answer: South Carolina crews can take theory online, join a live-virtual cohort with a Level III instructor, or bring the training onsite to their plant, hangar or site. Practical exams always use real specimens under Level III oversight. Video and simulation never replace them.

South Carolina's manufacturing calendar shapes when training works. Automotive plants have summer shutdown weeks and model-year changeovers, which are good windows for production inspectors. Aircraft and turbine plants run to delivery schedules, so short, focused onsite sessions work better than week-long absences. Nuclear stations at Oconee, Catawba, Robinson and V.C. Summer refuel on fixed cycles, and contract technicians are booked months ahead. Online theory lets them study between outages. Hurricane season on the coast can disrupt schedules from summer into autumn, so Lowcountry companies often prefer live-virtual theory they can reschedule easily.

Onsite delivery means the instructor comes to your South Carolina facility, uses your equipment and procedures, and, where possible, uses your own parts and welds as practice specimens. The specific exam can then reflect your real work. Onsite suits companies with several technicians in a method, or companies that want training tied tightly to their written practice. Live online theory suits mixed groups and individuals. See online NDT training and corporate NDT training. When you're ready, request a cohort or onsite quote for South Carolina. Cohort and onsite quotes come back within one business day.

For South Carolina employers: written practice and Level III services

Direct answer: A South Carolina company that certifies its own NDT people needs a compliant written practice, a responsible Level III, and auditable training and exam records. Atlantis NDT writes and reviews written practices, provides Level III services, and runs corporate training for South Carolina employers.

The state's supplier base is full of companies with a few NDT inspectors inside a quality department and no in-house Level III. Customer audits by aircraft, automotive and turbine OEMs are where gaps show up: training records that don't match the practice, exams not administered by a qualified Level III, out-of-date vision tests, or a practice that doesn't reflect what the shop actually does. We help close those gaps with:

If an OEM audit is on the calendar, book a Level III consultation. We start by reviewing your current documents.

Practise before your practical exam

Direct answer: The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets South Carolina trainees practise 12 NDT methods in 5 virtual environments before their hands-on exam. It builds familiarity with set-up and technique, but it is practice only. It does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.

The environments are an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank. For South Carolina users, the aircraft hangar matches North Charleston and Greenville aerospace work, the welding workshop matches automotive and fabrication weld inspection, and the NDT lab matches production inspection of parts. See Practical NDT, Practical NDT Charleston and Practical NDT Columbia.

Your instructor

Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He oversees course content, written practices and Level III services, and the live-virtual and onsite training delivered to South Carolina employers.

NDT training in South Carolina: frequently asked questions

How do I become NDT certified in South Carolina?

Work for or be sponsored by an employer with an SNT-TC-1A written practice.
