SNT-TC-1A certification path in Newport News, step by step

1. Written practice. The employer adopts a written practice based on SNT-TC-1A that defines training, experience, examinations, vision and recertification for each method and level. Where the employer also supplies Navy work, its programme must additionally meet the requirements its customers flow down, which the employer's Level III reconciles.
2. Formal training. Complete the classroom hours the written practice requires, online, onsite or blended. The training-requirements matrix shows SNT-TC-1A recommended figures; customer specifications can require more.
3. Supervised experience. Log documented hours performing the method under a certified Level II or III.
4. General examination on principles, equipment and terminology.

Newport News Shipbuilding, part of HII, builds the Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and, with a partner yard, its nuclear submarines, and also performs carrier refueling and complex overhaul. Aerospace, research and aviation maintenance. NASA Langley Research Center in neighbouring Hampton and the aviation units at Joint Base Langley-Eustis support aerospace research, aircraft and rotorcraft maintenance. Aerospace employers frequently require NAS 410 qualification, which is a separate scheme; some industrial and research employers work to SNT-TC-1A.

Power generation. Dominion Energy's Surry Power Station, a two-unit nuclear plant across the James River in Surry County, brings outage work where in-service inspection follows ASME Section XI. Nuclear UT typically needs performance demonstration qualification in addition to SNT-TC-1A training, and utilities impose their own access programmes.

Bridges, tunnels and terminals. The James River Bridge, the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel and the port and energy terminals on the Peninsula need steel and structural inspection, typically to AWS D1.5 for bridge welding and owner specifications for everything else.

Radiography licensing in Virginia. Virginia became an NRC Agreement State on March 31, 2009. The Virginia Department of Health's Office of Radiological Health licenses radioactive material, including industrial radiography sources, under the Virginia Radiation Protection Regulations (12VAC5-481), with regulatory guidance for industrial radiography programmes. Radiographer training and certification follow those regulations and the company's licence conditions.
