NDT Training and Certification in Illinois

Short answer: Illinois technicians and employers get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based NDT training from Atlantis NDT through live online classes, live-virtual sessions, or onsite delivery at their own plant, shop, rail yard or outage site. We offer Level I and II courses in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET, plus Level III exam preparation, all led by an ASNT NDT Level III. Your employer certifies you under its written practice, and we can build or review that written practice too.

Illinois is an unusual NDT state. It runs more nuclear reactors than any other state in the country, it has four large refineries split between the Chicago area and the south of the state, it is the busiest rail crossroads in North America, and it is home to heavy-equipment, agricultural-machinery and aerospace-component manufacturing that depends on weld and casting inspection. Downstate, Patoka is one of the country's key crude-oil hubs, and pipelines run across the state in every direction. Each of those industries wants something different from its NDT people. This page explains how training and certification work in Illinois, what the state's regulators expect, where the work is, and how to get a quote. Where NDT technicians work in Illinois

Direct answer: Illinois NDT work clusters in the Chicago metro and Will County refining and manufacturing belt, the northern Illinois nuclear corridor, the Rockford aerospace cluster, the Peoria and Quad Cities heavy-equipment region, the central Illinois agri-processing and power region around Decatur and Springfield, and the Metro East refining and pipeline hub across the river from St. Louis.

Chicago metro and Will County

The Chicago area combines two refineries in the southwest suburbs (near Joliet and Lemont), chemical plants, tank terminals, steel service centres, large fabrication shops and some of the densest construction activity in the Midwest. Refinery turnarounds bring heavy seasonal demand for UT thickness and corrosion mapping, PAUT weld inspection, RT of piping welds, VT of pressure equipment and ET of heat exchanger tubing. Construction projects downtown and in the suburbs use structural steel welded to AWS D1.1, which leans on VT, UT and MT. Chicago's movable bridges, elevated rail structures and expressway bridges add fabrication and in-service inspection work under the AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code. O'Hare is also a major airline hub with associated maintenance activity.

The northern Illinois nuclear corridor

Illinois has six operating nuclear stations: Braidwood, Byron, Dresden, LaSalle, Quad Cities and, in central Illinois, Clinton. Refuelling outages bring large in-service inspection programmes under ASME Section XI, with UT of piping and vessel welds, ET of steam generator and heat exchanger tubing, VT of components and supports, and PT and MT on repairs. Outage contractors need technicians whose certification records are clean, current and auditable, and nuclear quality programmes are among the strictest that SNT-TC-1A-certified personnel work under.

Rockford and the aerospace cluster

Rockford has long been one of the country's important aerospace-component centres, with makers of aircraft actuation, power, fuel and control systems and a deep base of precision machining and special-process suppliers. Those suppliers rely on PT, MT, ET and UT done under tightly controlled written practices, often with customer aerospace requirements such as NAS 410 referenced alongside SNT-TC-1A.

Peoria, the Quad Cities and heavy equipment

Peoria and East Peoria are synonymous with earth-moving equipment, and the Quad Cities (Moline and Rock Island) are home to agricultural-equipment manufacturing and the Rock Island Arsenal. Heavy welded frames, booms, axles, castings and forgings need MT, UT and VT, and large welding programmes need inspectors who understand AWS D1.1 and company weld standards. The arsenal adds defence manufacturing work.

Central Illinois: Decatur, Springfield and Champaign

Decatur is an agri-processing city with large corn and soybean processing plants and heavy-equipment manufacturing. Agri-processing plants run boilers, pressure vessels, steam piping and storage tanks that need routine UT thickness, VT and MT/PT on repairs. Springfield, the state capital, has municipal and regional power generation, state agencies and rail. Ethanol plants and grain facilities across central Illinois add tank and pressure equipment inspection.

Southern Illinois and the Metro East

The Metro East, across the Mississippi from St. Louis, holds a large refinery at Wood River and Roxana, petroleum terminals and chemical plants. Further south and east, Robinson has another refinery, and Patoka is a major crude-oil storage and pipeline hub where several large crude pipelines terminate or interconnect. Pipeline construction and integrity work across the region follows API 1104 and ASME B31.4 and B31.8, generating RT, UT and VT demand. Scott Air Force Base near Belleville adds aerospace and defence activity, and coal-fired and gas-fired power plants dot the southern half of the state.

Rail, barges and transportation

Chicago is the meeting point of the major North American freight railroads, and rail car shops, locomotive facilities and component suppliers across Illinois use UT, MT and ET on axles, wheels, couplers and welded car structures. Barge terminals on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers and the Illinois Department of Transportation's bridge inventory add structural inspection work.

ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Illinois employers

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT delivers ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I and Level II courses in eight methods, plus Level III exam preparation. The table shows each method, the levels available, how Illinois employers use it, and prerequisites. Your employer's written practice sets the exact hours and experience.

MethodLevelsWhat Illinois employers use it forPrerequisite
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)I, II, III prepRefinery thickness surveys at Joliet, Lemont, Wood River and Robinson; nuclear Section XI weld examinations; heavy-equipment welds in Peoria; rail axlesLevel I: per employer. Level II: Level I training plus documented experience
Phased Array UT (PAUT)II, III prepRefinery and pipeline weld inspection, corrosion mapping, nuclear weld examinations, heavy fabricationUT Level II recommended
Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)II, III prepThick-section vessel and pipeline welds, heavy fabricationUT Level II recommended
Radiographic Testing (RT)I, II, III prepPipeline welds around Patoka and across southern Illinois, refinery piping, castingsRadiation safety training and IEMA radiographer certification rules apply before working with sources
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)I, II, III prepHeavy-equipment frames and castings, forgings, rail components, structural and bridge steelPer employer
Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)I, II, III prepRockford aerospace components, stainless welds, nuclear repairs, machined partsPer employer
Visual Testing (VT)I, II, III prepConstruction welding in Chicago, nuclear outage VT, pressure equipment and tank inspectionVision test per written practice
Electromagnetic Testing (ET)I, II, III prepSteam generator and heat exchanger tubing at nuclear and refinery sites, aerospace surface inspection, rail componentsPer employer

Illinois employers often stack methods. An outage contractor might certify a new hire in VT Level I and II, then UT, then ET as they gain outage experience. A heavy-equipment plant might certify welding inspectors in VT and MT first, then UT for critical welds. We plan these pathways around your written practice. For Level III candidates, see ASNT Level III training and exam preparation.

NDT training by city in Illinois

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT serves every Illinois city through online and onsite delivery, with dedicated training pages for Chicago and Springfield and simulator practice pages for Chicago, Rockford, Peoria and Decatur. The table links each local page; the notes below explain the work in each city.

Chicago. Chicago demand is the broadest in the state: refinery and terminal contractors need UT, PAUT, RT and ET technicians; construction inspection firms need VT and UT inspectors for structural steel; bridge fabricators need AWS D1.5-qualified UT and MT; and fabrication shops need a clean written practice. Many Chicago employers want live-virtual classroom sessions so technicians can stay on their shifts. See the Chicago NDT training page.

Springfield. Springfield sits in the middle of central Illinois, where power plants, rail and state infrastructure drive steady UT, MT and VT work. It is also within reach of the Clinton nuclear station and central Illinois agri-processing plants. See the Springfield NDT training page.

Rockford. Rockford's aerospace supply chain needs PT, MT and ET technicians certified under well-documented written practices, often with additional customer requirements. Precision machining and special-process shops are frequent clients for written practice and exam administration support.

Peoria and the Quad Cities. Heavy welded structures and castings mean MT and UT dominate, along with VT for large welding programmes. Plants often want onsite training on their own parts so inspectors learn exactly the indications they will see on the line.

Decatur. Agri-processing plants run boilers, steam systems, pressure vessels and tanks, so UT thickness, VT and MT/PT dominate. Heavy-equipment manufacturing adds weld inspection.

Joliet, Lemont and the Metro East. These are Illinois's refining towns. Turnaround season pulls in contractors from across the Midwest, and companies often want a cohort certified in UT, PAUT or RT just before the work starts.

SNT-TC-1A certification path in Illinois, step by step

Direct answer: Illinois follows the national, employer-based model for NDT certification. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your employer's written practice sets the rules; you complete classroom training and experience, pass general, specific and practical exams under a Level III, pass a vision test, and your employer certifies you. Radiographers also need state certification from IEMA.

  1. Employer written practice. Your employer adopts a written practice based on SNT-TC-1A that defines hours, exams, vision requirements and recertification. We can write it; see written practice development.
  2. Classroom training. Complete Level I, then Level II training in your method, live online or onsite. Hours follow your written practice; the training requirements matrix lists SNT-TC-1A recommended hours.
  3. On-the-job experience. Log documented, supervised experience hours in the method.
  4. General exam. Written exam on method principles.
  5. Specific exam. Covers the procedures, codes and equipment you actually use, such as ASME Section V, ASME Section XI for nuclear work, AWS D1.1 or API 1104.
  6. Practical exam. Hands-on demonstration on flawed specimens, graded by a Level III.
  7. Vision exam. Near-vision acuity and colour contrast checks.
  8. Employer certification. Your employer issues certification based on documented training, experience and exams.
  9. For radiographers: state certification. Industrial radiographers in Illinois must also hold radiographer certification issued by IEMA, in addition to SNT-TC-1A method certification.
  10. Recertification. Recertify at the interval in your written practice and keep vision tests current.

Radiography licensing and other Illinois requirements

Direct answer: Illinois is an NRC Agreement State. Radioactive materials, including industrial radiography sources, are licensed by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) under Title 32 of the Illinois Administrative Code, and IEMA issues its own certification for industrial radiographers. Boilers fall under the Office of the State Fire Marshal; intrastate pipelines under the Illinois Commerce Commission.

Industrial radiography

Illinois has been an Agreement State since the late 1980s, so state rather than federal regulators license radioactive material use inside Illinois. Companies performing industrial radiography need an IEMA licence or registration, and their radiation safety programme must describe initial, periodic and on-the-job training for radiographic personnel. Illinois goes further than many states by issuing its own radiographer certification under Title 32: individuals who perform or personally supervise industrial radiography must hold IEMA radiographer certification. Radiographer's assistants must complete required training and work under supervision. Out-of-state licensees use reciprocity to work in Illinois. Atlantis RT training covers the SNT-TC-1A method side (technique, exposure, film and digital interpretation); it complements but does not replace the radiation safety training and state certification steps. Always confirm current requirements with IEMA-OHS before a crew starts work.

Boilers and pressure vessels

The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal administers boiler and pressure vessel safety through its Division of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety. Illinois adopts the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and National Board inspection rules, so repair and alteration work needs NDT to ASME Section V by personnel certified under the repair organisation's quality programme.

Pipelines

Interstate pipelines are regulated by PHMSA. Intrastate gas pipeline safety in Illinois is enforced by the Illinois Commerce Commission's pipeline safety programme. With the Patoka hub and major crude and products lines crossing the state, API 1104 radiography and UT, ASME B31.4 and B31.8, and operator-specific procedures are central to pipeline NDT work.

Nuclear

Nuclear power plants themselves are licensed by the NRC regardless of Agreement State status. In-service inspection at Illinois's six stations follows ASME Section XI, with performance-demonstration requirements for some UT examinations. Atlantis provides SNT-TC-1A method training as a foundation; nuclear-specific qualifications are handled by the licensee's programme.

Codes Illinois employers commonly use

Some employers also ask for API inspector or CWI credentials for specific roles; those are separate schemes that Atlantis does not train.

Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Illinois

Direct answer: Atlantis NDT has no training centre in Illinois. Classroom training is delivered live online or live-virtual, and practical training and exams are delivered onsite at your facility under ASNT Level III oversight, using your equipment and specimens.

Individual technicians use online NDT training for the classroom portion of Level I and Level II: live sessions with a Level III instructor covering principles, equipment, technique, codes and interpretation. Practical hours and exams then happen with your employer.

Employers with a group usually prefer onsite delivery. We run sessions at your plant, shop, rail facility or contractor yard, build the course around your procedures, and use your instruments, calibration blocks and part samples. A Peoria plant trains MT and UT on its own welded frames; a Chicago-area refinery contractor trains UT and PAUT on piping mock-ups; a Rockford supplier trains PT and ET on its own components.

Illinois scheduling revolves around nuclear refuelling outages (spring and fall at most stations), refinery turnarounds, the summer construction season and winter production shutdowns. We schedule cohorts to finish before each window. Multi-site programmes run through corporate NDT training. Ask about onsite training for your Illinois crew.

For Illinois employers: written practice and Level III services

Direct answer: every Illinois NDT employer certifying personnel under SNT-TC-1A needs a written practice and Level III oversight. Atlantis NDT writes and updates written practices, reviews procedures, administers exams and provides Level III services to companies without an in-house Level III.

Illinois has many mid-sized manufacturers and fabricators that need certified NDT personnel but do not employ a Level III. Common audit findings include missing training-hour records, practical exams without graded checklists, expired vision tests and written practices that do not reflect actual work. Nuclear and aerospace customers in particular expect records that stand up to scrutiny.

Practise before your practical exam

Direct answer: the Practical NDT simulator lets Illinois trainees practise 12 NDT methods in five 3D environments before the practical exam. It builds familiarity with technique and indications; it is practice only and does not replace a practical exam on real specimens.

The Practical NDT simulator includes an NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site and storage tank. For Illinois work, the welding workshop maps to heavy-equipment and bridge fabrication, the hangar to Rockford's aerospace chain and airline maintenance, the oil and gas site to refinery and pipeline work, and the storage tank to terminals and agri-processing. See the Practical NDT in Illinois page plus city pages for Chicago, Rockford, Peoria and Decatur. For written-exam practice, try UT Level 2 practice questions.

Your instructor

Direct answer: Illinois programmes are led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT.

Anoop designs the courses, delivers Level III-led instruction, and oversees exams and records so that certification is defensible under SNT-TC-1A. His approach ties method theory to the codes, procedures and parts your Illinois crew uses every day. Ask about scheduling an Illinois programme.
