NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Illinois

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Illinois gives it plenty to work with. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like simulator that runs in a browser or app. Technicians pick up a virtual probe, yoke or eddy current coil and inspect realistic assets, from weld coupons and pipe spools to pressure vessels, heat-exchanger tubes, airframe parts and a full-size storage tank, and they receive a score and specific feedback the moment each job is complete. Illinois is one of the most industrially dense states in the country for inspection work. It has more nuclear reactors than any other state, four crude oil refineries, one of the biggest crude pipeline and storage hubs in North America, a steel and heavy-fabrication belt around Chicago and along the Mississippi, a precision aerospace cluster in Rockford, and heavy-equipment and agricultural processing plants across the centre of the state. Each of those sectors demands a slightly different set of methods and habits, and the people who do the work are often moved between them. Practical NDT gives Illinois trainees a way to build fundamentals before they reach a plant, and gives working technicians and Level IIIs a way to rehearse, refresh and benchmark skills without booking lab time, pulling reference blocks off the shelf or waiting for a real defect to show up.

Illinois's NDT workforce and where the work is

Illinois inspection work is easiest to understand region by region.

Chicagoland and the Calumet and I&M Canal corridors. The Chicago metropolitan area is the state's largest concentration of inspection companies and technicians. South and southwest of the city, the Calumet region and the Des Plaines and Illinois River corridor hold refineries at Lemont and Joliet, petrochemical and chemical plants, bulk liquid terminals and tank farms, and a web of crude and product pipelines. Steel mills, forging shops, structural fabricators and pressure-vessel builders are scattered across the south suburbs and into northwest Indiana. Chicago is also the country's biggest rail hub, which brings a steady stream of wheel, axle, rail and tank car inspection, and O'Hare and Midway airports support aircraft maintenance.

Northern Illinois nuclear belt. Five of the state's six nuclear plants sit within roughly a hundred miles of Chicago: Braidwood, Byron, Dresden, LaSalle and Quad Cities, with Clinton in central Illinois. Refuelling outages at these plants bring large volumes of ultrasonic, eddy current, visual and radiographic inspection under ASME Section XI in-service inspection programmes, and they draw travelling outage technicians from across the Midwest.

Rockford and the northern manufacturing towns. Rockford has long been one of the Midwest's notable aerospace manufacturing clusters, with precision machining, actuation, fuel and power systems suppliers, fastener makers and heat treaters. That work depends on penetrant, magnetic particle, eddy current and ultrasonic inspection of machined and forged parts.

Central Illinois (Peoria, Decatur, Bloomington, Springfield). The centre of the state is heavy-equipment and agricultural processing country. Earth-moving and mining equipment plants in the Peoria and Decatur areas build large welded frames, booms and castings, and grain and oilseed processing plants run boilers, pressure vessels, dryers and extensive piping. Power stations and the Clinton nuclear plant add further inspection demand.

Southern Illinois and the Metro East. Across the Mississippi from St. Louis, the Wood River refinery at Roxana, pipeline terminals, and heavy manufacturing in the Metro East form another cluster. Further southeast, the Robinson refinery serves the region, and Patoka in south-central Illinois is one of the continent's major crude oil pipeline and storage junctions, a centre for tank and pipeline integrity work. River terminals and barge fleeting along the Mississippi, Illinois and Ohio rivers round out the picture.

Chicago. Chicago technicians are generalists by necessity. In one year a Chicagoland inspector might work a refinery turnaround in Joliet, a tank inspection at a Calumet terminal, a structural steel project downtown, rail equipment in a south suburban shop and a nuclear outage at Dresden or Braidwood. Practical NDT's breadth suits that career: Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank for refinery and terminal work, Welding Workshop PAUT and TOFD for fabrication and outages, and the Aircraft Hangar for technicians who support aviation maintenance at O'Hare and Midway.

Peoria. Peoria's inspection work grows out of heavy-equipment manufacturing: thick structural weldments, frames, booms and castings, plus the machining and heat treating that surround them. Magnetic particle and ultrasonic inspection of welds and castings are central, and visual weld inspection is constant. Welding Workshop and NDT Lab scenarios give shop technicians repetition on the defects they must catch before a machine leaves the plant, and river terminals and power stations add boiler and piping work.

Rockford. Rockford's aerospace suppliers need technicians who can find small surface and near-surface defects in machined aluminium, titanium and steel parts. Eddy current, penetrant and magnetic particle dominate, usually under NAS 410 style employer qualification. The Aircraft Hangar and NDT Lab environments line up closely, and technicians who pick up outage work at the nearby Byron nuclear station can switch to Welding Workshop RT and UT scenarios.

Decatur. Decatur is one of the country's major agricultural processing centres, with corn and soybean plants running boilers, pressure vessels, reactors, dryers and long piping systems, alongside large-scale equipment manufacturing and a nearby nuclear plant at Clinton. That gives Decatur inspectors a refinery-like mix of pressure equipment work, which the Oil & Gas Site environment's thickness, PMI and IRIS jobs reflect, plus structural weld inspection for the manufacturing side.

Environments and methods that match Illinois work

Practical NDT includes five workplace environments and twelve methods. For Illinois, they map as follows.

Oil & Gas Site. 73 jobs of weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant. This is the core environment for refinery and petrochemical technicians in Joliet, Lemont, Roxana and Robinson, and it also suits the pressure equipment in agricultural processing plants. IRIS internal rotary UT on heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI alloy verification, UT thickness and corrosion surveys and LRUT guided-wave screening of pipe runs are all included.

Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. Patoka, the Chicago-area terminals and the refinery tank farms together contain a great many aboveground storage tanks inspected under API 653, and the MFL floor scan is a skill most trainees rarely get to practise before doing it on a real floor.

Welding Workshop. 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints, covering VT, MT, contact UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT interpretation. This fits heavy-equipment weldments in Peoria and Decatur, structural and pressure-vessel fabrication around Chicago, and weld examinations during nuclear outages.

Aircraft Hangar. 54 jobs on airframe and component inspection. Rockford's aerospace suppliers and aircraft maintenance at Chicago's airports benefit most, especially from eddy current and ultrasonic scenarios.

NDT Lab. 52 jobs on bench specimens and reference blocks, plus the 33 guided lessons. This is where Illinois trainees from community college welding and manufacturing programmes should start: calibration, reference standards, MT field direction, PT process control and UT setup.

Regulators and requirements Illinois technicians meet

Illinois is an NRC Agreement State. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS), through its nuclear and radiation safety programmes, licenses and inspects most users of radioactive materials and registers x-ray equipment in the state. Illinois also runs its own certification for industrial radiographers: operators of certain industrial radiography equipment must be certified by IEMA-OHS, which involves passing an examination and submitting a certification application, with the radiation safety officer confirming work experience for initial certification. The NRC's Region III office, located in Illinois, oversees the state's commercial nuclear power plants. Always confirm current requirements directly with IEMA-OHS before planning radiography work.

Boilers and pressure vessels in Illinois are regulated by the Office of the State Fire Marshal's Division of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety, which applies the ASME code and National Board Inspection Code to construction, repair and in-service inspection. Intrastate natural gas pipeline safety is handled by the Illinois Commerce Commission, with PHMSA regulating interstate gas and hazardous liquid pipelines. Nuclear plant inspections follow ASME Section XI and NRC requirements.

The codes Illinois inspectors work to include ASME Section V, VIII and I, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, API 510, 570 and 653, API 1104 for pipeline welding, AWS D1.1 for structural steel and AWS D15.1 for railway equipment. Aerospace employers commonly qualify personnel to NAS 410. We mention these schemes only as context for what Illinois employers may require. Atlantis frames its training around ASNT SNT-TC-1A, and Practical NDT is practice that supports technicians under any scheme, not a qualification under any of them.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Illinois

New trainees. Illinois has a large pipeline of welders, machinists and veterans who move into inspection. Practical NDT's 33 guided lessons and the NDT Lab environment let a newcomer learn how each method works, how to calibrate and how to scan before they ever stand in a refinery unit or on a shop floor. That makes the formal classroom hours and on-the-job training that SNT-TC-1A requires far more productive.

Working technicians. Outage season, turnaround season and steady manufacturing work pull Illinois technicians between very different jobs. Rare-defect refreshers let you rehearse the method and defect type you are about to face: a crack at a fillet weld toe in a heavy weldment, stress corrosion cracking in exchanger tubes, a subtle indication in a TOFD scan of a thick butt weld. Instant scoring tells you whether your technique is where it needs to be.

Level IIIs and team leads. Illinois Level IIIs often oversee large, mixed crews, including travelling outage technicians, contract turnaround staff and in-house shop inspectors. Practical NDT lets you build and assign scenario sets that reflect your written practice and clients' procedures, benchmark every technician against the same jobs and find coverage gaps before an auditor or an escaped defect finds them for you.

Practice vs certification

Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, does not award any level, and does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer's written practice require. Your employer's Level III remains responsible for your training, experience, examinations and certification. Illinois industrial radiographer certification through IEMA-OHS is a separate legal requirement that a simulator cannot satisfy.

What Practical NDT does is make the time around those requirements count for more. Trainees arrive at practical exams with many more repetitions behind them. Technicians returning to a method after months away can warm up without a lab booking. Level IIIs can see where their people need more real-specimen practice. Atlantis provides formal NDT training and certification programmes separately; Practical NDT complements that training and your employer's programme and never replaces it.

Bring Practical NDT to your Illinois team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and its scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who leads Atlantis training. For an Illinois company, a rollout usually starts with a demo, followed by a pilot that matches your work: Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank for refinery, terminal and processing plant crews, Welding Workshop for fabrication and outage technicians, Aircraft Hangar and NDT Lab for aerospace suppliers. Your Level III then sets up scenario sets and tracks progress across the crew.

Practical NDT is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, with pricing on a quote-on-request basis. Request a Practical NDT demo for your Illinois team or ask for a quote for a pilot group. You can also write to info@atlantisndt.com.

Frequently asked questions

Does Practical NDT replace the practical exam or Illinois radiographer certification?

No. It is practice only. SNT-TC-1A certification still requires a practical examination on real specimens under your employer's written practice, and industrial radiographers in Illinois must hold the certification IEMA-OHS requires. Practical NDT helps you prepare but substitutes for neither.

Is it useful for nuclear outage technicians?

It helps outage technicians rehearse weld volumetric methods, including contact UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT interpretation in the Welding Workshop. It does not replace plant-specific or performance-demonstration qualifications required in nuclear work.

Which environment suits Rockford aerospace suppliers?

The Aircraft Hangar environment, with 54 airframe and component jobs, fits best, supported by the NDT Lab for penetrant, magnetic particle and calibration practice.

Can refinery and terminal crews practise API 653 style tank work?

Yes. The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, and the Oil & Gas Site covers piping, vessels and exchanger tubes.

Can our Level III build scenario sets for our crews?

Yes. Level IIIs and team leads can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark technicians objectively and identify coverage gaps. Ask for a demo to see it in action.

Does it need special equipment?

No. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app, so technicians can practise on everyday devices at the office, at home or at a site trailer.
