NDT Training and Certification in Michigan
Short answer: Michigan technicians and employers get ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based Level I, II and III training from Atlantis NDT through live online classes, live-virtual cohorts, or onsite delivery at your own plant, shop or outage site, all led and overseen by an ASNT NDT Level III. Certification is employer-based: your written practice, your training hours, your on-the-job experience and your exams, administered by a Level III. Atlantis has no Michigan training centre; we come to your facility or teach you online.
Michigan is one of the most demanding NDT markets in the Midwest because it combines high-volume manufacturing with heavy industry. The same state that stamps, casts, welds and machines a large share of North America's vehicles and powertrain parts also runs a refinery in Detroit, three nuclear plant sites on its Lake Michigan and Lake Erie shores, crude and gas pipelines that cross the Straits of Mackinac and the Thumb, steel mills along the Detroit River, chemical plants in the Great Lakes Bay Region, and an Air National Guard base north of the city. Each of those sectors has its own codes, its own customer specifications and its own idea of what a qualified technician looks like. This page explains how NDT training and certification works for Michigan, where the work is, what Michigan employers ask for, which regulators matter, and how to request a Michigan training quote that fits your crew.
Where NDT technicians work in Michigan
Direct answer: NDT work in Michigan clusters in Southeast Michigan (automotive, steel, refining, power), the Great Lakes Bay Region (chemicals, castings, energy), West Michigan (aerospace suppliers, furniture-metal fabrication, food-plant stainless), the Lake Michigan and Lake Erie shorelines (nuclear plants, pumped storage) and Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula (pipelines, mining, locks and bridges).
Southeast Michigan: Detroit, Dearborn, Warren, Monroe and Downriver
Metro Detroit is the centre of gravity. The Detroit Three and hundreds of Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers run stamping, casting, forging, welding and assembly lines where NDT is used for weld verification, casting porosity checks, crack detection in forged and heat-treated parts, adhesive and spot-weld evaluation, and incoming inspection of bought-in components. Ultrasonic spot-weld testing, eddy current sorting and crack detection, magnetic particle inspection of forgings and penetrant testing of aluminium castings are all common. Marathon Petroleum's Detroit refinery, the only refinery in the state, generates turnaround and in-service inspection demand: corrosion mapping, thickness surveys on piping circuits, weld radiography and phased array on new tie-ins. Cleveland-Cliffs' Dearborn Works and the steel and metals plants Downriver bring rolling-mill, crane and structural inspection. DTE Energy's Fermi 2 nuclear plant near Monroe and the coal-to-gas transition at the region's large power stations add boiler, piping and pressure-boundary work. The Gordie Howe International Bridge and the steady flow of MDOT bridge projects keep structural welding inspectors and UT technicians busy.
Great Lakes Bay Region: Midland, Saginaw and Bay City
Midland is home to Dow's large chemical complex, which means process piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and storage tanks inspected to ASME and API practice, with frequent shutdown windows. Saginaw has a long casting and powertrain history, and foundry work means radiography and penetrant of castings, plus ultrasonic inspection of machined parts. Bay City and the surrounding area add power generation and marine work on Saginaw Bay.
West Michigan: Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Holland and Kalamazoo
West Michigan has a dense base of precision manufacturers and aerospace suppliers, so you see penetrant and magnetic particle lines working to customer specifications and NAS 410-style aerospace requirements, eddy current on aluminium and fastener holes, and ultrasonic inspection of composites and bonded structures. Muskegon adds foundries and heavy fabrication, Holland has battery and advanced-manufacturing plants, and Kalamazoo has pharmaceutical and food-grade stainless fabrication where orbital welds and visual inspection matter.
Lakeshore power: Bridgman, Covert and Ludington
Michigan's nuclear sites, the D.C. Cook plant at Bridgman and the Palisades plant at Covert, plus Fermi 2 in Monroe County, create ASME Section XI in-service inspection work during refuelling outages, along with UT, ET of steam generator and heat-exchanger tubing, and VT of supports and welds. Consumers Energy's Ludington Pumped Storage plant on Lake Michigan adds penstock, turbine and structural inspection.
Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula
Enbridge's Line 5 crosses the Straits of Mackinac and the Upper Peninsula, and interstate gas transmission lines run across the Lower Peninsula, so pipeline construction and integrity programmes need API 1104 weld radiography, AUT, UT thickness and visual inspection. The Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie, where a new lock chamber is being built, the Mackinac Bridge, mining operations in the western UP and paper mills add structural and rotating-equipment work.
If your company works in any of these regions, you can ask about onsite training for your Michigan crew and we will plan around your production schedule or outage window.
ASNT Level I, II and III courses for Michigan employers
Direct answer: Atlantis NDT teaches UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET at Level I and Level II, plus Level III exam preparation, all structured around ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your company written practice. The table below maps each method to the Michigan work it is most often used for.
| Method | Levels | What Michigan employers use it for | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) | I, II, III prep | Spot-weld and seam-weld checks on automotive bodies and battery trays, thickness surveys at the Detroit refinery and Midland chemical plants, forging and bar inspection, bridge weld inspection | Level I: none beyond employer requirements. Level II: Level I plus experience per written practice |
| Phased Array UT (PAUT) | I, II | Pipeline girth welds, pressure-vessel and piping welds during turnarounds, corrosion mapping, nuclear ISI support | UT Level II recommended before PAUT Level II |
| Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) | I, II | Thick-section welds on pressure vessels and heavy fabrication, crack sizing on in-service equipment | UT Level II recommended |
| Radiographic Testing (RT) | I, II | Pipeline welds, casting radiography in foundries, piping welds on new construction and repairs; film and digital interpretation | Radiation-safety training and the licensing route that applies to your source (see below) |
| Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) | I, II | Forgings, crankshafts, axles, gears and heat-treated parts; crane and structural welds; wet fluorescent bench lines in powertrain plants | None beyond written practice; vision test |
| Penetrant Testing (PT) | I, II | Aluminium castings, aerospace parts in West Michigan, stainless welds in food and pharma fabrication | None beyond written practice; vision test including colour |
| Visual Testing (VT) | I, II | Weld inspection in fabrication shops, structural steel, nuclear supports, incoming inspection | None beyond written practice; near-vision acuity |
| Eddy Current Testing (ET) | I, II | Sorting and crack detection on automotive parts, heat-exchanger tubing at power and chemical plants, aircraft fastener holes | Basic electrical knowledge helpful |
Level III candidates in Michigan usually want to cover the ASNT Basic examination topics (materials and processes, other methods, SNT-TC-1A and CP-189 knowledge) and a method examination in the method their company relies on most, often UT or MT in manufacturing and UT or RT in energy. Our ASNT Level III training page explains how preparation is structured. For Level II UT candidates, the UT Level 2 practice questions are a useful self-check before your written exams.
NDT training by city in Michigan
Direct answer: Atlantis NDT serves every Michigan city the same way, online or onsite at the employer's facility. Detroit has a dedicated training page, and several other Michigan cities have Practical NDT simulator pages. The table shows where each city's demand comes from.
| City | Main NDT sectors | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Detroit and Dearborn | Automotive, refining, steel, bridges, power | NDT training in Detroit and Practical NDT Detroit |
| Grand Rapids | Aerospace suppliers, precision manufacturing, food equipment | Practical NDT Grand Rapids |
| Flint | Automotive assembly and parts, metal fabrication | Practical NDT Flint |
| Saginaw | Castings, powertrain, steering components | Practical NDT Saginaw |
| Midland and Bay City | Chemical plants, process piping, power | Covered by this page; onsite on request |
| Lansing | Automotive assembly, state infrastructure work | Covered by this page; onsite on request |

| Monroe | Nuclear, power generation, steel | Covered by this page; onsite on request |
Detroit. Detroit crews tend to split between production NDT inside plants, where MT, PT, ET and UT on parts dominate, and field NDT in refining, power and construction, where UT thickness, PAUT, RT and VT on welds dominate. That split matters for training: a production technician may need deep knowledge of one technique on one part family, while a field technician needs broad code knowledge. We build the course content around which of those your crew is doing. See the Detroit training page for city detail.
Grand Rapids. West Michigan's aerospace and precision suppliers work to prime-contractor specifications that often reference NAS 410 alongside or in place of SNT-TC-1A. We are clear about what we teach: our training is SNT-TC-1A-based, and if your customer requires NAS 410 qualification your Level III will need to map our training to that standard. Many Grand Rapids shops use penetrant and eddy current heavily.
Flint and Saginaw. These cities have deep automotive and casting roots. Foundry radiography, penetrant on aluminium castings, MT on steel parts and ultrasonic checks on welded assemblies are the typical work. Onsite training on the customer's own parts and procedures is especially effective here because acceptance criteria are part-specific.
Midland and Bay City. Chemical-plant inspection relies on API 510 and API 570 programmes run by the owner, with UT thickness, PAUT and RT doing the measurement. We do not offer API inspector certification training, but we train the NDT technicians who collect the data those inspectors rely on.
Lansing, Kalamazoo and Monroe. Lansing has automotive assembly and structural work, Kalamazoo has clean-process stainless fabrication and defence suppliers, and Monroe combines a nuclear plant, a large coal-fired station and steel. All are served online and onsite.
SNT-TC-1A certification path in Michigan, step by step
Direct answer: In Michigan, as in every other US state, SNT-TC-1A certification is issued by your employer, not by the state or by ASNT. The employer's written practice sets training hours, experience and exam rules; a Level III administers exams; and the employer certifies you once you pass and meet the vision requirements.
- Your employer adopts a written practice. This document, based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, defines the methods, levels, training hours, experience hours, exam content, passing grades, vision tests and recertification interval. If your company does not have one, see written practice development.
- You complete formal classroom training. Training hours per method and level are set by the written practice using SNT-TC-1A recommendations. Check the training requirements matrix for the guideline figures.
- You build on-the-job experience. Experience is logged under the supervision of qualified personnel, in the method and on the kind of work you will be certified for.
- You pass general, specific and practical exams. The general exam covers method theory, the specific exam covers your employer's procedures, codes and equipment, and the practical exam is performed on real specimens. A Level III prepares and administers these.
- You pass the vision examination. Near-vision acuity is checked annually and colour contrast as the written practice requires.
- Your employer certifies you. Certification is documented and is valid for your employer. If you change jobs in Michigan, your new employer decides whether to recertify you under its own practice.
- You recertify. Recertification intervals are set in the written practice, commonly through re-examination or evidence of continued satisfactory performance.
For Level III candidates the path is different: the ASNT NDT Level III certificate is issued centrally by ASNT through examination, and employers then certify their Level III under their written practice. More detail is on our SNT-TC-1A training and certification page.
Radiography licensing and other Michigan requirements
Direct answer: Michigan is not an NRC Agreement State. Industrial radiography with radioactive sources such as Ir-192 or Co-60 in Michigan is licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region III, under 10 CFR Part 34. The state's radiological protection programme within the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) regulates X-ray equipment and certain other radiation sources.
This split is important for training. A Michigan radiography company using isotope cameras holds an NRC licence, follows 10 CFR 34 for radiographer and radiographer-trainee qualification, radiation-safety training, personnel monitoring, survey instruments and two-person field crews, and its radiographers must be certified through an NRC-recognised route. A company using only X-ray cabinets or portable X-ray tubes deals with the state for registration and inspection. Radiation-safety training is separate from the SNT-TC-1A RT method training that teaches film or digital technique and interpretation; your crew needs both. Because rules are updated, confirm the current requirements with NRC Region III and EGLE before a new crew starts field work.
Boilers and pressure vessels. Michigan's boiler programme sits within the Boiler Division of the Bureau of Construction Codes in the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). Michigan adopts ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sections and the National Board Inspection Code for installation, repair and inspection, so ASME Section V NDT methods and Section VIII or Section I acceptance criteria show up in shop and field work. Repair organisations work to National Board requirements.
Pipelines. Intrastate natural gas pipeline safety in Michigan is overseen by the Michigan Public Service Commission, while interstate gas and hazardous-liquid lines, including Line 5, are regulated by PHMSA. Pipeline welding and NDT generally follow API 1104, and operators require NDT technicians to meet their own qualification programmes in addition to SNT-TC-1A certification.
Codes common in Michigan. ASME Section V, VIII and B31.3 in refining and chemicals; ASME Section XI at the nuclear plants; AWS D1.1 for structural steel and bridges (with AASHTO/AWS D1.5 for bridges); API 1104 for pipelines; automotive OEM and customer standards in manufacturing; and NAS 410 in aerospace supply chains, which we mention as context only.
Online, live-virtual and onsite training across Michigan
Direct answer: Michigan crews can train three ways with Atlantis NDT: self-paced or scheduled online theory, live-virtual cohorts with a Level III instructor, or onsite sessions at your plant or job site. Practical exams are always performed on real specimens under Level III oversight, never replaced by video or simulation.
Michigan scheduling has a rhythm, and training works best when it follows it. Automotive plants have model-year changeovers and summer shutdown weeks, which are good windows for production NDT staff. Refineries and chemical plants schedule turnarounds, often in spring and autumn, which is exactly when contract technicians are least available, so we push theory into the months before. Nuclear sites have refuelling outages on fixed cycles, and contractor technicians are often booked months out; online theory lets them study at home between outages. Pipeline construction slows in the Michigan winter, so pipeline crews often train in the cold months. Northern and Upper Peninsula companies benefit most from online theory, because travelling to Metro Detroit for a classroom week is expensive in time.
Onsite delivery means the instructor comes to your Michigan facility, uses your equipment, your procedures and, where possible, your own parts and welds as practice specimens, and the specific exam can reflect your actual work. It suits companies with five or more technicians in a method, or companies that want training tied tightly to their written practice. Live online theory suits mixed groups and individuals. For details see online NDT training and corporate NDT training, and when you are ready, request a cohort or onsite quote for Michigan; cohort and onsite quotes are returned within one business day.
For Michigan employers: written practice and Level III services
Direct answer: Michigan companies that certify their own NDT people need a compliant written practice, a Level III to own it, and auditable training and exam records. Atlantis NDT writes and reviews written practices, provides Level III services, and runs corporate training programmes for Michigan employers.
Many Michigan manufacturers have a handful of technicians doing one or two methods inside a quality department, and no in-house Level III. Customer audits by OEMs and aerospace primes are where gaps show up: missing training records, exams not administered by a qualified Level III, vision tests out of date, or a written practice that does not match what the shop actually does. We help close those gaps with:
- Written practice development and review to SNT-TC-1A, aligned with your customers' requirements.
- Level III services: procedure writing and review, technique sheets, exam preparation and administration, and audit support. See NDT consulting in Michigan.
- Corporate training programmes for multi-site Michigan employers, so the same standard applies in Detroit, Grand Rapids and Saginaw.
- Guidance on SNT-TC-1A certification for companies writing their first practice.
If an OEM audit is coming up, book a Level III consultation and we will review your current documents first.
Practise before your practical exam
Direct answer: The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets Michigan trainees practise 12 NDT methods in 5 virtual environments before their hands-on exam. It builds familiarity with technique and equipment set-up, but it is practice only and does not replace the practical exam on real specimens.
The simulator includes an NDT lab, a welding workshop, an aircraft hangar, an oil and gas site and a storage tank environment. For Michigan users, the welding workshop maps well to fabrication and automotive weld inspection, the oil and gas site and storage tank to Detroit and Midland plant work, and the aircraft hangar to West Michigan aerospace suppliers and Selfridge-area maintenance. Learn more at Practical NDT and the Practical NDT Michigan page.
Your instructor
Training is led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. He oversees course content, written practices and Level III services, and the onsite and live-virtual training delivered to Michigan employers.
NDT training in Michigan: frequently asked questions
How do I become NDT certified in Michigan?
Get hired or sponsored by an employer that has an SNT-TC-1A written practice, complete the classroom training hours it requires, build the on-the-job experience, pass the general, specific and practical exams given by a Level III, and pass the vision test. Your employer then certifies you. Atlantis provides the training and can help your employer with the rest.
Is there NDT training online in Michigan?
Yes. Theory for UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT, VT and ET can be taken live online from anywhere in Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula. Practical exams are still performed on real specimens under Level III oversight.
Do I need a license to do radiography in Michigan?
The company needs the licence or registration, and radiographers need qualification. Michigan is not an NRC Agreement State, so isotope radiography is licensed by the NRC under 10 CFR 34, while X-ray equipment falls under the state's EGLE radiological programme. Confirm current rules with both agencies.
How much does NDT training cost in Michigan?
It is quoted on request. The quote depends on method, level, number of trainees, online versus onsite delivery, and whether you also need written-practice or exam support. We return cohort and onsite quotes within one business day.
Which NDT method is most in demand in Michigan?
UT is in demand across almost every sector. MT and PT are heavily used in automotive, forging and casting; PAUT and RT are in demand for pipelines, refining and power; ET matters for parts sorting and heat-exchanger tubing.
Can you train our crew onsite in Detroit or Grand Rapids?
Yes. Onsite training at your facility is available anywhere in Michigan, using your equipment and procedures where possible.
Is SNT-TC-1A recognised by Michigan employers?
Yes. SNT-TC-1A is the most widely used guideline for employer-based NDT certification in US industry, including Michigan manufacturing, energy and construction. Some aerospace customers also reference NAS 410, so check your customer's requirement.
How long does Level II take?
It depends on your employer's written practice, the method, and your experience. Classroom hours and experience hours are both set by the practice; see the training requirements matrix for SNT-TC-1A guideline figures.
Can I take NDT training without an employer in Michigan?
You can take the classroom training as an individual, and it counts toward the formal training requirement. Certification itself still needs an employer and its written practice.
Do automotive plants in Michigan need certified NDT technicians?
Plants that use NDT to accept product, or whose customers require documented qualification, generally certify their inspectors to a written practice. Requirements come from the customer and the quality system, so check what your OEM or Tier 1 asks for.
Do you prepare candidates for the ASNT Level III exams?
Yes. We offer Level III exam preparation for the Basic and method examinations. See ASNT Level III training.
What does an NDT technician earn in Michigan?
Pay varies with method, level, sector and overtime. For published ranges, see our NDT salary guide.
