NDT training in Salt Lake City: how it works for Salt Lake City employers and technicians

Those sectors do not all qualify NDT personnel the same way. Refineries work to SNT-TC-1A with API credentials for the inspectors of record. Aerospace works to NAS 410 with Nadcap-accredited processes. Military depots work to Air Force technical orders. Rocket-motor inspection uses techniques, radiography and computed tomography in particular, at scales rarely seen elsewhere. A technician who understands which system an employer runs, and which one they are training for, has a real advantage on the Wasatch Front.

Most people searching for NDT training in Salt Lake City fall into one of a few groups. Some are new hires at refinery-service or fabrication contractors who need Level I and II quickly. Some are technicians leaving military service at Hill Air Force Base who have NDT skills and want a civilian SNT-TC-1A certification. Some are manufacturing employees at aerospace and defence suppliers adding a method. SNT-TC-1A certification path in Salt Lake City, step by step

1. Your employer's written practice. The written practice defines how the employer trains, examines and certifies NDT personnel: hours, exams, grading, vision requirements, recertification and the responsible Level III. No written practice means no SNT-TC-1A certification. See written-practice development.
2. Formal classroom training. Method training delivered self-paced online, onsite or blended, to the hours in the written practice. Recommended figures are in the training requirements matrix.
3. On-the-job experience. Supervised experience in the method on real work, logged and signed. Refinery turnarounds can build experience hours quickly because of the sheer volume of examinations. Aerospace production work builds them steadily.
4. General examination. A written exam on the principles of the method.
5. Specific examination. A written exam on the employer's procedures, codes and equipment, for example refinery inspection procedures and ASME B31.3 acceptance criteria, or a customer's aerospace process specification.
6. Practical examination. A hands-on exam on real specimens with real discontinuities, administered and graded by a Level III or designated examiner.
7. Vision examination. Near-vision acuity and colour-contrast testing per the written practice, repeated annually.
8. Certification by the employer. The employer certifies you for the method and level, and the records are kept on file for audit.
9. Recertification. On the interval set by the written practice. Certification generally ends when you leave an employer, and a new employer re-certifies you under its own written practice, often crediting documented prior training and experience.

For veterans coming out of military NDT roles at Hill Air Force Base or elsewhere, military training and experience can be valuable evidence, but they do not convert automatically into civilian SNT-TC-1A certification. Self-paced online or onsite NDT training for Salt Lake City crews

Blended. Theory online, practical onsite. This is the common choice for Salt Lake City employers training several people at once.

Timing matters on the Wasatch Front. Refinery turnarounds absorb every available technician for weeks at a time and are usually planned for spring and autumn. Where NDT technicians work in Salt Lake City

The refinery corridor. Utah has five petroleum refineries, clustered north of Salt Lake City in North Salt Lake and Woods Cross. They include Marathon's Salt Lake City refinery (the largest in the state, operating since 1908), Chevron's Salt Lake refinery, HF Sinclair's Woods Cross refinery, Big West Oil's North Salt Lake refinery and a smaller independent refinery in Woods Cross. Together they supply most of the gasoline and diesel used in Utah and Idaho. Refinery inspection runs on SNT-TC-1A for NDT personnel, with API 510, 570 and 653 inspectors of record responsible for vessels, piping and tanks. Codes such as ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII and API 650/653 govern what technicians inspect. Turnarounds are the busiest periods for NDT contractors in the region. The refineries also illustrate a local risk: the March 2020 Magna earthquake reminded operators that seismic events can trigger unplanned inspection of equipment, supports and piping.

Hill Air Force Base and the Ogden Air Logistics Complex. North of Salt Lake City, the Ogden Air Logistics Complex at Hill AFB is one of the Air Force's major depots, maintaining front-line aircraft including the F-35 and F-16, and handling landing gear for a wide range of Air Force aircraft. Depot NDT is heavy on ET, UT, PT and MT for aircraft structures, components and landing gear. Air Force NDT follows Technical Order 33B-1-1 and related technical orders, and civilian personnel qualification in this area references NAS 410. Contractors and suppliers supporting depot work need to know which system applies to their scope.

Rocket motors and defence manufacturing. Northern Utah is the centre of the US solid-rocket-motor industry. Northrop Grumman's Promontory operations build large solid rocket motors and boosters, and its Magna site produces motors and composite structures. Northrop Grumman's Roy campus is the headquarters of the Sentinel ICBM programme. Inspection here involves radiography and computed tomography of motor cases and propellant, UT and bond inspection of composite cases, and precision NDT on metallic hardware, all under strict defence quality requirements. L3Harris and a network of defence suppliers along the Wasatch Front add further scope.

Commercial aerostructures. Boeing's Salt Lake City plant builds composite structures for commercial aircraft, including 787 tail components. Composite aerostructures rely heavily on automated and manual UT for porosity, delamination and bond-line inspection. Aerospace suppliers in the region work under NAS 410 personnel qualification and Nadcap-accredited NDT processes. SNT-TC-1A method knowledge is directly relevant, but the certification scheme is different.

Mining, smelting and heavy industry. Rio Tinto's Kennecott Utah Copper operates the Bingham Canyon mine southwest of the city, along with the smelter and refinery near Magna. Heavy mining equipment, haul-truck frames, crushers, conveyors and smelter vessels need UT, MT and VT on structural welds and wear components, and thickness surveys on process vessels and piping.

Pipelines and energy. Interstate gas transmission pipelines such as Kern River run through Utah. Crude and product pipelines feed the refineries and carry fuel to neighbouring states. The regional gas utility, now part of Enbridge, maintains distribution and transmission lines across the state. Pipeline weld inspection follows API 1104, and pipeline operators require operator qualification for covered tasks. That is a separate federal requirement from NDT method certification. Power generation, including the Intermountain Power Project near Delta, which is converting to natural gas and hydrogen-capable units, adds boiler, piping and heat-exchanger inspection.

Radiography licensing. Utah is an NRC Agreement State, and has been since 1984. The Utah Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control, within the Department of Environmental Quality, licenses radioactive-material use, including sealed-source industrial radiography, and registers x-ray equipment. The state's industrial radiography rules follow the federal Part 34 model, requiring approved training programmes and recognised radiation-safety qualification for radiographers on top of SNT-TC-1A RT certification. Level III services and written practices for Salt Lake City NDT companies

Practise before the practical exam

Practical exams test process as much as knowledge: set-up, calibration, coverage, indication evaluation and documentation. Do I need a license for radiography in Utah?

The license is held by the company. Companies doing industrial radiography with radioactive sources in Utah need a license from the Utah Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control, and x-ray equipment must be registered. Individual radiographers need recognised radiation-safety qualification and training under the licensee's programme, in addition to SNT-TC-1A RT certification.

Do refinery NDT technicians in Salt Lake City need API certification?
